My hotbin dropped again after a five day break away but it’s up to 40 again and is steaming away so was surprised it wasn’t higher - but maybe that’s why - I have the long thermometer so it’s reading much lower than the top section. Happy birthday to Mrs Beanie 😃

Hi Kate. Yes it is surprizing how different the length of the two thermometers can change the readings. The Hotbin company say you only need to feed the hotbin once a week to keep it hot but I am not so sure.

Happy Birthday to the Mrs. I have been watching your videos from the start, this one was very informative, my temperature is struggling around 35 -40 at the moment. A general question and you may know the answer, I have trouble getting down to unscrew the cap on a mk2 bin due to a disability I have; for a long time I have been wondering about fitting a tap on it. Do you happen to know the thread of the screw outlet? Do you think it would work? I have my bin raised on two concrete blocks so it's fairly high. I have plenty of taps from my wine making days. Keep up the good work you are an inspiration to many people.
@BeanieComposter

Hi I do not know the thread size but would imagine it would be a standard fit. If you could find the same lid say from a drinks bottle lid then you could drill/make a hole in this that you you fit a tap onto like from a water butt. I hope this makes sense. Maybe I need to do a video it may help someone out. Thank you for your kind words and add plenty of bulking agent with a good mix if your bin does not need emptying. Let us know how you get on with both.

My hotbin is struggling around 35 - 40 according to my short probe. But it is producing good compost every few months which I store in a dalek composter bin. I will have nearly enough for my whole garden this year without having to bulk buy from Wickes. Many Happy Returns Mrs Beanie.

That is great news Ken. 35-40 is still going to compost quicker than a cold compost. Are you feeding it enough waste as you should be able to keep it hotter than that this time of the year. You are certainly making the most of it though with the amount of compost you are producing. Well done.

My hotbin has recently suffered a real drop in temperature and its taken me a good few weeks to sort it.I watched your videos on how to kickstart it again and I realised I had been adding too much food and garden waste but not enough paper and cardboard and bulking agent.Getting the mix right seems to be key.Back up to temperature now after a frustrating time trying to sort it out but lessons learnt so its not all negative.Ive been collecting coffee grounds from my local cafe and their smoothie waste as well every day and I find this is a great addition.Thanks so much for your great videos.Looking forward to the next ones.

Well done for getting things sorted. You really are helping the environment and helping out the coffee shop with their waste. That will come in handy as there becomes less waste in the garden. Getting the mix is key and it really depends on the individual with what they are putting in theirs. Hope it stays hot from now on.

@@BeanieComposter Thanks so much for your reply.I was so relieved to finally open the bin and enjoy a nice facial steam without any unpleasant odours.Also your tip about the cross shredder in one of your videos is particularly helpful as I had an old one that cut everything up like ribbons and I found it was getting as matted as the grass can sometimes get in the bin.Really hard to mix it all but since I have splashed out on this cross shredder(not too expensive)I've found it 100 per cent easier.At one stage trying to mix the other stuff in I thought I was in danger of actually falling in the bin.Who needs the gym when you have a hotbin!Take care Beanie family.All the best.Liz

Happy Birthday A Big birthday 30 she’s looking great you must be doing something right. As for size like you I’ve both. The advantage I’ve found I haven’t lost the large one yet. It should be no different from the large one. It is just smaller in size but the actual insulation and way it is made is the same as the large one. It is not too small to stay hot as it should work the same. I did a few experiments see the newest video. I plan to get it up and running in the next few weeks but with winter here we do not have so much time for filming weather permitting. Are you feeding it enough and what temps did you get up to. Are you adding enough bulking agent and mixing well? What are you feeding it?

I have followed your videos and still my bin rarely goes over 30°C. I've noticed that you have lots of paper, maybe I don't have enough? I have used woody clippings or cardboard to avoid buying wood chips but both lots of compost that I've taken from it has been rather wet and lumpy. It isn't smelly, so that's something.
@BeanieComposter
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan. I am sorry to hear that. The wood chippings that are the bulking agent are quite important for the air flow and that may be the reason. Even though I use woody clippings I still use wood chips as I find it important. The cardboard will fix the moisture but will not help with air flow. Although you say it is wet and clumpy it will be as it has not reached high temperatures but as you say it is not smelly then I think you have the paper/cardboard mix correct for me you can never add too much paper. I think you really need wood chips as well. If you know a tree surgeon or just see a place where a tree has been cut down and can get them for free then this should help. Getting air into the mix is important and bulking agent and a good mix will hopefully help. If you remember when mine would not go over 40 I had restricted the air flow and I ended up putting a lot of wood chippings in the mix before it finally when into orbit. Hope this gives you hope and I know this Hotbin is not as easy as the Hotbin company make out. That is why I started this channel.

@BeanieComposter

Yes if you watched cooking in a hotbin then I have had it very hot at times. Open the aeration valve on the top full for a while but it will generally not stay hot for too long as the bacteria will be destroyed when it is so hot. Enjoy reaching such temps some people on here would bite their hand off for that. By winter you will be wishing for that heat so as I say enjoy. Don't worry it will not cause any harm or ignite.

@@BeanieComposter at the moment the temp is really good for this time of year, after I top it up I check it next day, so far it has been between 50c to 60c , I keep it in a small greenhouse, which no doubt helps, next year might put it in the polytunnel, that keeps quite warm even this time of year. The next one that I build, I will line the inside with plastic or similar, so I can stir it up using a paint stirrer in a drill, what are your thoughts on that?
