I'm sitting here bawling. You have no idea what an answer to prayer this video is. I have a severely dyslexic child. I wish it was just bs and ds that he flips. Hes also has ADHD. I've been trying to teach him for years and have asked for help, even this morning. Oh he's dyslexic you must do All about reading. It's the only way to teach kids with dyslexia. We did All about reading! He hated it the first day. I tried for two weeks. Two weeks of tears, frustrations and meltdowns. He finally took the curriculum and threw it in the trash. I asked some homeschool moms what I should do now. Do you know what they told me to do... ORCE HIM! No one has ever told me to try sight words.

Yes, in this case try it. I have a program I use with Naomi call SnapWords. It had pictures with the words.

That's why I love Happy Cheetah Reading; it's sight word-based. It might just work!

We are at the stage where she knows her sounds, but struggles with blending! Now I’m thinking I should focus on sight words to give her some more confidence.

I think phonic is very important but agree sight words like “THE” just is something that wouldn’t make sense in sounding out. English language is just weird sometimes, I couldn’t imagine how confusing it is to learn

This is tragic to me. Sight reading is increasingly used as a primary method not just a compliment and the illiteracy I’m seeing in schools is just jarring…. Why would you want kids to have to have understood a word before they can read it? Sight reading is pure memorization without the effort required to decode or use contextual cues - so it only promotes speaking, not true reading which implies comprehension.

My child is a right brain learner. So flashcards/ sight words are exactly how he has retained. I tried so many phonics based curriculums and nothing really stuck. The right brain flashcards have worked even for retaining Math facts. Every kid doesn’t learn the same and parents should do what is best for their kids. It’s as if a lightbulb turned on and got it. He can see it in his mind, the first time we did it. All I could do was cry because it took us years to get here

Glad you talked about this topic. We started with learning letter sounds and a little bit of blending but once I introduced sight words, I saw a huge change in our reading skills. Sight word reading works for us as my child struggles with decoding and sight words provide less frustration. As you said phonics are important too and learning them helped my girl to write three-letter words with the help of sounds. It totally depends on the child, and what they are comfortable with. So just follow your child.

This was great. Thanks for sharing. I’ve always wondered which is the better approach. We do a mix of both.

Our physician actually asked me to try All About Reading with our 7 year old with ASD as he is doing a lot of sight reading and memorizing. This physician has not always loved that we homeschool, but hasn’t been completely against it either. So the fact that she researched this was pretty cool, and we are going to try it out.
