Although not botanically accurate (thistles and shamrocks don't grow from dual stems, and leeks don't grow from stems at all) the composition of the reverse is nice and symmetric, and, pleasingly to my eyes at least, leaves little blank space. The obverse of such early Elizabeth II coins is really nice. It's a very classic sort of coin design. The proportion of the lettering to the portrait is perfect, and the font of the lettering is well-chosen. Notice how the top of Elizabeth's head, and the bottom of the bust are parallel curves to the circular rim of the coin! Besides the cross being a pleasing space-filler in the legend, it also recalls the practice of mediæval coins where a cross would be used to indicate where one should start reading a circular text. When I do Buddhist art pieces including circular text, I follow this same tradition, substituting a dharma wheel for a cross.
