Thanks Dave. I never heard of the gray line. I did listen to Gordon West 30 years ago. He said the D layer can be remembered as “that darned (radio wave) sponge “. Your videos are so nice to listen to. Your voice is soothing, and apparently you have so much science other than ham radio, in your noggin. What is your background? My aunt Kathy and Uncle Eddy live in Montrose on Spruce. (For 65 years).

Hi Dave ... great presentation on Grayline. My question is, so there must be 2 ways to get to the same station using gray line propogation!, long path and shorth path, is there any way to figure out what path the signal will take ? the reason for my question is I am building a 2 element ground plane, (GP and a reflector) and need to figure out in what direction I should point ! So if my goal for the antenna is NewZealand Shorth path is 76 degrees long path is 256 degrees and about the same distance ..... Which one to chose long or shorth path?

The Karman line (not exactly arbitrary) was given the round number 100km. But it’s actually a little lower. And was a theoretical measurement where a conventional wing needs to be flying so fast to create lift that the speed is actually at or above the speed needed to be in a stable orbit at that altitude. So at 100km a space plane adding velocity might get some lift still but mostly it will be affecting its orbit, push the other side of its orbit to a higher altitude. The wings lift may be negligible compared to the nature of orbital mechanics at or above this “line” between atmosphere and space proper.

Dave, you need to start scripting your videos again. Your lesson was not very cohesive. In fact I just about lost it when you compiled your pre-summary at about 10:30 by stating that the grayline transition is where funny things happen.... Good grief.
