I've been using the ODR-1 for about 10 years. I bought it at a flea market for $25. I'm not sure if it's an original or a reissue. I never noticed the need for a bass cut. It's been on my board ever since while many OD pedals costing hundreds of dollars have come and gone. It's the best IMO. Never heard of Tom Bukovac until his Homeskoolin' videos. I think Tom is an amazing player. He's a true musician even though he doesn't read music. Plays keys, bass, guitar, and probably more. You should interview him for Truetone.

Depends on the amp and the guitar. A warmer sounding amp will make the ODR1 sound muddy to some people. A clean or bright amp works best IMO.

This was the first video I seen on the Nobels and rightfully so, Zac is part of the reason I play a tele after hearing all the history and great tone of the almighty Tele, but I finally just ordered me one 3 years later after watching this video. Since that three years I've owned a ts9 which I loved for a minute but got bored and traded for boss bluse driver which was hated. After watching the plethora of videos that has been made about this pedal in the last few years they reminded me of how sick this lil dirty green gem is. I just wanted to come back and thank you Zac God bless ya, from deep in the heart of Tx

Yep, I've been using my ODR-1 for about five years now, since just before moving to Nashville. I bought it during my pre-Nashville "studying up" phase. Nothing can substitute for actually hanging here though! So much tone progress since then, but the ODR-1 is still in heavy use.

Love the ODR. I'm a working musician - but also an audio engineer. I've done live FOH work, for many bands. I'm always listening to tone of all the instruments and I geek out on guitarist's pedalboard. I often find the ODR-1, in the chain. I'm currently modding my Biyang X-Drive to emulate it. I know I could buy one; and prob will. For now, modding is fun

Tomas, I've bought and sold various OD pedals, and one factor that sees me putting them on ebay is background noise or hiss, but this is rarely mentioned in youtube videos. I don't like noise gates, as I think the noise shouldn't be there in the first place. With your audio engineering and FOH experience, how do you find the ODR-1 in this respect?

I bought one about 6 weeks ago. Spent a day with it. I wasn't happy with any sound I could produce with it along with my Music Man Cutlass through a new Peavey Bandit 112 amp. I returned it the following day. I settled on 3 pedals for my lead sounds. I use a Boss GE-7 EQ Pedal, a Boss Blues Driver BD-2, and an Ibanez TS808 Reissue Tube Screamer, connected in that order on my pedalboard. Depending on the song, I use one, two, or all three pedals stacked to achieve great tones from clean country picking to overdriven rock sounds. I also have a Keeley Compressor+ after the TS808 set for a relatively low compression to tame peaks and improve sustain while preserving pick attack. This combination works very well for my taste and touch and makes playing so much more inspiring and enjoyable. On the downside though, a pedalboard can be an expensive performance tool. But I must admit that mine has added more to my musical experience than I thought it possibly could going in.

FYI. The designer of the ODR-1, Kai Tachibana, started his own company, also in Hamburg, called Nordland and he is offering the ODR-C and ODR CC(+), his contemporary look on his original ODR-1 designs. As I never played an original ODR-1 I cannot vouch for an similar or improved sound, but the extra controls and the more consistent components definitely suggest a more usable pedal. The CC+ that I got instantly became my main overdrive. Extra controls are a pre-drive bass control (for all non-tele players) plus an 'overdrive decompress' control and (in the +) a very usefull extra mid EQ control. In a certain setting of the extra controls it is supposed to sound and respond like an original ODR-1. TPS Dan was very impressed and also Tom is seen comparing it shortly to the th ODR-1 in his guitar-giveaway video.

I just picked up a used ODR-1 (with bass cut) for $70. The pedal sounds incredible. With my Strat, Tele, R9 or 335 through my '66 Deluxe Reverb, it has a beautiful sound with each guitar. I have no interest in comparing my $70 ODR-1 with any ODR's from any era. I don't see the need to go down a rabbit hole splitting hairs and sniffing corks. I know there are a ton of Nobels clones out there and that's cool.....if somebody wants to spend $1,000 buying 3-4 of them (or fewer) to compare, who am I to tell you not to do that? I'd rather spend my time playing and enjoying myself. This is some of the best $70 I've ever spent.

So bought one and paired it with a '72 Deluxe Reverb for countless recordings and gigs over the years. I've had to repair it once about 8 years ago (a resistor was bad, iirc), and today it's still kicking along just fine. Hey Zac, do you have your DR mic'ed , perhaps in the back? I think it's from an old Lenoard Skinnard Album? The reason I ask is I want to learn it .. Anyway. Your Content always "ROCKS".. I love watching your Videos! : ) Please have a great day and Happy 2022 too!

Great video Zac! Always a pleasure to hear your stories. I have a Truetone VS-XO. Is it true that the overdrive on the left side is a modified ODR-1 with a treble and bass knob?

@@AskZac ok now I get it. I bought a black truetone vs xo at a musicians swap meet.i had never heard of one. I got it home and It made the main pedal I had been using sound like a transistor radio . It's been my only distortion pedal since. I now have a milk crate of old pedals I need to sell. I felt lucky after 45 years of playing to find the truetone

You are great Zac! There are numerous video reviews of pedals on KZitem. Your reviews are different because of who you are and your background. You may or may not want to in the future do a review of your choice of pedals under $100. I have bought some pedals in the $30 to$50 range and have had bad luck with them. Most guitar players don't have $300+ for pedals. Just a suggestion. Love what your are doing! Thanxz

"Gibson guy in a Tele town." I'm almost 61 and remember a time during the late 70's to early 80's when about half the guys in Nashville were playing Les Paul's and 335's. For some odd reason, a cheap Gibson knockoff brand--Hohner--really made the rounds. Literally, about every other country show on TV had some guy on it playing a Hohner Les Paul copy. I've always wondered what the deal was with those. Maybe Hohner gave them away to a lot of Nashville players to boost the brand or something. I never owned one but played a few back in the day. For a cheap bolt-on neck copy, they seemed very nice actually. Anybody know what the Nashville connection was with those?

You are right. Companies would routinely giveaway guitars to try and get exposure in TV. In the 80’s and 90’s Fenders were everywhere. Hence the title of my interview with Tom.

It's a good pedal. I did an album session in my home studio in the 90s and Tom Britt had one. I bought it based off of that and had it a few years. It was defintely the "it" pedal in Nashville for a few years. Then after that it was The Timmy... then others took it's place. 'Tis the nature of guitar pedal fascination.

Speaking of Hellcasters and modifications, Jerry Donahue let me play his first Fender signature tele right after it came out back in the 80's. You might recall it had a strat pickup in front, but they did some stuff with the wiring and a 5-way switch that made it sound just like a strat in the 2 position. I thought he was pulling my leg and had a strat pickup in the middle hidden under the pick-guard (like a stealth tele), but he told me it was done by placing a cap inside one (or maybe both) of the pickup windings. I think, however, that the JD models Fender sold did things differently and didn't have a cap wound inside a pickup. I've never played any of the store models, just Jerry's, so I'm not sure if they sound close or not. But his sounded bang-on like a strat. One of the greatest Fender guitar mods ever in my opinion.

@@wildbillhackett I actually had one of the Fender custom shop models, and if I remember correctly, it did have unique wiring. It was quite a while ago, so I'm not 100% sure on that. Sounded great and played great though! That much I remember!

Hi Zac! Just wondering if the Visual Sound Open Road is somewhat of a clone of the Nobels ODR-1? Just a rumour I’d heard that would explain the Open Road’ success with the Nashville crowd. Sorry for the late question lol, just getting into your videos. Love them, keep’em coming! Thank you

@@AskZac awesome! Thanks so much for the response! It’s my “home base” pedal lol. Every time I think I’ve found something better I go back to the Open Road after a few weeks! I would love if Truetone reissued it, or better yet built a triple pedal that has their Route 808 going stackable into the Open Road with a clean boost on the end for solos. I’d buy one as it basically is what I’m running now, and this way I wouldn’t have to go back to my old trusty Open Road! Lol thanks again Zac
