My grandparents own a Phu Quoc dog too. And I have to say he’s super smart and loyal. Like he‘ll never bark at our guests if we allow them to enter the house. But he will follow the guests around the house to make sure the guests don’t steal anything lol~ And when my grandpa died, he slept under my grandpa’s coffin every night.

I have two Vietnamese coworkers, and asked them recently about this breed. I already knew about but sometimes people don't know about rare breeds from their own country, especially if it's isolated, like on an island. They both knew it well, both commented on how it's "extremely smart", and one of them actually have one at home in Vietnam, brought over to the mainland from Phu Quoc island. Her previous lived to 15 years.

But there are no pure breed Phu Quoc ridgeback, even in Phu Quoc island. Around 80s-90s, the islanders crossbreed with foreign breeds because they think it will make them more valuable, (they think foreign stuffs are better than native). And when they realize how rare of Phu Quoc ridgeback, it's too late.

A nice documentary. Thank you. I also own a Phu Quoc Dog and i can underline everything that has been said. They are great loyal and loving dogs! I got a female dog, she is 1.5 years old. Looking at the female dog in the video makes me wonder if they really need to be that thin? My dog is not that slender. We do exercise up to 5 times a day. I keep her walking for at least 2 sometimes up to 3 hours a day. She would eat much more than I offer her but I serve only half the ammount than the packaging description suggests. The breeder told me the dogs must have rice in their food... however we dont have rice every day she goes with the regular food as well. I live partly in Vietnam and I see many Phu Quoc Dogs chained up in yards in front of houses. They are never exersised and kept inside most of the time. It´s a shame, because these dogs need exersise and want to run and sniff... best regards from Suoi Nuoc, Mui Ne.

If you want to own an exotic animal like the now extinct Tasmanian tiger or regular tiger but would like to domesticate it, Phu Quoc dogs come as close as it gets. These dogs have ridge back, tiger stripes, and webbed feet with long/curled up claws. All that made this royal specie great swimmer and agile climber. With their lean built, they are also a speed demon. Their intelligence made them uncanny.

I have 2 they both were placed outside at 4 months old(We have a big yard that’s fenced in). And they love kids they knows the difference between kids and adults. And they are not people aggressive at all. Dog aggressive OF course because they are game dogs (Game American Pitbull Terriers) but I just dicscored the phu quoc dog on instagram and had to come watch a video on it so far liking this breed.💯

I believed she wasnt a pit or labrador so I did some reaserch and found the Thailand Ridgeback looked like her but black wasnt a common color for Thai ridgeback but the black Phu Quoc Ridgeback when I Google it the results look remarkably like my dog down to the ears and ridge of hair, of course if that's true I have no idea they got her breed out of the Thailand or Vietnam area because they are highly valued there.

The Thai Ridgeback Dog is an old breed which can be seen in the archeological documents in Thailand which were written about 360 years ago. It was used mainly for hunting in the eastern part of Thailand. People also used it to escort their carts and as a watch dog. The reason why it has kept its own original type for so many years is due to poor transportation systems in the eastern part of Thailand; it had fewer chances to crossbreed with other breeds.

Most common dog in Vietnam. Really lovely breed. I live in Ho Chi Minh and you see a lot of them on short chains to be "shop dogs". Its a great dog breed but sadly the knowledge on how to raise dogs and make proper use of them is nearly non existent. Many are beaten and dog thieves roam around quite a lot to transport and sell them as meat (dog meat is still a thing in the north of Vietnam). Im happy to see that there is a breeder outside of Vietnam, so the breed as a chance to thrive.
