I'm a builder, and I like the work you have done here. Super craftsmanship all around. You have plenty of thickness for insulation. If you had gone with 2x4 walls and put 4 inches of rigid on the outside, you would then obviously have to adapt how you fasten your cladding, plus you'd have challenges if you wanted to fasten anything heavy to the outside walls. Now you can either clad the wall as is, or put a thin layer of rigid on the outside to help mitigate thermal bridging, if you choose to do so. To say that it's overkill doesn't really factor in the diverse advantages that you have gained or the problems you have overcome. Plus, it just feels great to have a rock solid structure!! 👍👍👍👍

I understand that this is sturdy but a 2x6 has an R-value of 6.88 and it looks like about 30% of that wall is wood. After windows and doors this is going to be like an R-12 wall unless you add 4” of foam. When we rebuilt our cabin, energy efficiency was one of our main goals. Not only is it more comfortable we don’t have to deal with all the “critters” we had before.

If your cabin is in an earthquake zone, your structural strength is hard to beat. If a cold northern zone, any excess thermal bridging could be assessed, then retrofitted with insulation board at a later time, if needed. Great idea to extend the sheeting down for maximum rigidity. Awesome construction technique and attention to detail!

As long as you were wearing a seatbelt, I think if that cabin tumbled down a hill, you’d definitely be fine. Then rent a crane and set it back on some piers and good to go. Idk where you’re building and that’d probably never happen, but man what an incredibly strong structure.

Paul, I’m in western NC which is considered a high wind zone per code, I’m also in a climate zone 5 region which actually governs the size of the framing for insulation purposes (2x6 walls, 2x10 floor joists, 2x12 rafters).

@@ShadyD365 I do! Still went though several county inspections, foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical, shower pan, hvac. I wanted to get everything permitted properly so that I would get a certificate of occupancy and also that the value of this cabin would be recognized and then increase significantly the value of my house next to it now that it will have this adu next to it.
@TheDIYCabinGuy
7 ай бұрын
@@ShadyD365 if I want to do everything legally then yes. Let’s say I built this cabin with no inspection and didn’t get caught. Let’s say I ever wanted to sell my house with this non-permitted cabin behind it, people would ask about it, they’d pull the record and figure out it was never permitted, that would negatively affect the value of the my house and cabin. I mean, what’s the point of spending so much money for a cabin if it doesn’t increase my value property, that’d be a big waste in my opinion. Also, without a properly permitted structure, I surely wouldn’t be able to rent it on airbnb. I mean I could but if anything happened, I would be in much more trouble. Doing it without permit is fine I guess if you’re building an off grid cabin in the middle of nowhere which will be only for personal use. It comes down to your county/city rules, if I had built a much, much smaller cabin. I think I wouldn’t have needed a permit, like 100 SF and smaller.

You need to start with an engineered foundation and a thorough understanding of the required framing the load path from top to bottom. You also need to take into consideration potential decay to prevent any future water infiltration. Energy conservation is a must. WELL DONE! Keep up the good work!

Ultimately, I don't want to dump on you because I also love to over-engineer stuff. Besides, it's your cabin and it's most definitely NOT going to fall down under ANY snow load. Your workmanship is also top notch! Having said that I do feel the need to point out that there comes a point where such a design is simply a pure waste of money, time, resources and will likely result in a building envelope that thermally under-preforms due to thermal bridging. Maybe this doesn't matter for the use case you have in mind, but I do feel that in this case a little less would have been more...

That back wall to the woods needs a big bay window and i think the roof should be dropped below the façade, kind of like on a movie set so that the front face extends above the roof a bit. I also think the structural roof "Triangles" on the front & back walls, should have been built "in addition" to the lower body installing a "runner" or Sil point across the top of the wall structure.. I think Timbers have to be used as a minimum to be considered a Cabin, though this is pretty much the same thing and probably a bit easier to manage building. Not like I am out building Cabins, but that is just what i think.. 😁 Great Job, nonetheless.. I am not a fan of OSB(wet), I would prefer cedar planks to remove that exterior as a weak point.

That structure will be standing after the apocalypse. Would you like to share how much you spent on the lumber for this tank?

You can join my emailing list if you get the cabin blueprint, I send a monthly newsletter with a breakdown of the money I have spent so far.

It depends on what wheather your dealing with an if your thinking about selling it later, if everything exceeds code and is solidly built that looks good on a listing, idk about renovation though

@The DIY Cabin Guy - Just came across your Video & was just curious as to why you didn't add any type of air seal between the bottom floor & the bottom plates?

the problems with over build syndrome 1 it waste lumber and all the other materials needed 2 it causes thermal bridging and reduces space to insulate 3 it increases labor, time, effort and all other costs of construction
