Two clips of Satyanarayana Das Babaji, with me in between speaking about māyā, with reference to Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 7 Verse 14. The word 'vṛtti' is used frequently throughout the Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali. Essentially, it refers to any sense impression, thought, idea, cognition, feeling, emotion, basically any mental state whatsoever.
Since the mind is never static but always active and changing, vṛttis are constantly being produced and thus constantly absorb the consciousness of **puruṣa, taking it away from its own pure nature, and channeling it out into the realm of the mind, body and world.
**In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the word 'puruṣa' is used for ātma. Puruṣa and ātma mean the same thing (the true self)
In verse 2 of Chapter 1 of the Yoga Sutras, the state of yoga is defined as:
yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ
Meaning . . .
Yoga is the complete stilling (nirodhaḥ) of the changing states (vṛtti) of the mind (citta)
Vijñānabhikṣu, in his commentary on the Yoga Sutras, compares vṛttis to the flames of a fire or the waves of the sea. In other words, if the mind is the sea, the vṛttis are its waves, the never-ending but ever-changing temporary forms and permutations produced by the constant flux of the tides, undercurrents, and eddies of the mind. There are five categories of vṛttis discussed in detail in the Yoga Sutras. Patañjali indicates that these vṛttis can be either akliṣṭa, conducive (at least initially) to attaining this state of yoga, or kliṣṭa, detrimental to it.
