When I've told people that things would work better like that (even when I didn't realize it was in the highway code, it just made logical sense to do it because only two people have to make the calculation), I've been told it isn't possible to do. It's because they are judging the situations with emotion, not logic, that they think it's not possible, and that is how problems in traffic arise.

I live in Guildford. Here it pretty much always works like that. People aren't always trying to get in front of others...and whether it's the slip road joining the A3 south, or joining the M25 in traffic from the A3, people go one from the left, one from the right, etc. Lorries make it a bit more difficult - since the lorry is long, should two cars go from the other side after the lorry? I had this the other day and it looked like the two cars were going to take the space anyway so I just let them.

Hi Ashley. This isn't necessarily relating to this video, but more around the recent Highway Code updates. I've recently just gained my PCV licence, I failed my first test due to confusion around the give way to pedestrians at a junction law. I was exiting a roundabout, pedestrians were waiting to cross, so I stopped to allow them to cross. My examiner failed me as he stated I do not have to give way at a round about as it's not a junction and stopping was causing other road users to stop. I was taking the final exit so essentially turning right at the roundabout, as i entered the roundabout nobody was waiting to cross amd i wasn't stopped on a box junction. I questioned this with my instructor after, he said it was correct and the only time you give way is when you're turning left into a junction? I feel this is a totally wrong interpretation of the law and I wish I had contested the result at the time . Thankfully I passed second time, but really has got me thinking about how many other people have failed driving exams due the vague interpretation of the update? Great video and driving a bus has given me far greater understanding of needing to hold back, give space and giving yourself time even if you're driving a smaller vehicle 👍👍

Yeah, I see that all the time on my daily commute. It's always busy, yet people still feel the need to overtake whenever you do the speed limit. Just a few weeks ago there was an absolute maniac (overtaking when there really wasn't any room, constant tailgating etc). Talking of space. I’m my HGV driving test, I approached a set of red lights, with one car already at them. Also a yellow hatched box a little behind the car. With just about enough space for me between the car and the yellow box for my (small) truck. I held back, rather than squeeze into the space, I couldn’t go anywhere anyway, the light was red. The clip at around 6:00. Good decision by the cammer to hold back for the van and trailer on the roundabout. What we will never know though is whether the trailer exited the roundabout into the left lane as a direct result of seeing the cammer make space...or whether they would have done so anyway and potentially on a collision course with the cammer.
@geoffos42
Жыл бұрын
At that junction, I was surprised to see the van and trailer in the right lane if he was going straight ahead anyway. Although it is signed on the road that you can use that lane to go straight ahead, it's usually used by motorists who are then going to take the right turn immediately after the roundabout, and as the clip fades, you can see that the right lane now has merge-left arrows indicating that you need to get over. During rush-hour this junction is very busy and most traffic is queued on the left to go straight ahead, but you usually find impatient drivers speeding down the right lane to get ahead of others on the other side of the roundabout. Fortunately, this whole junction is currently being rebuilt with one, huge roundabout replacing the smaller one, with the staggered roads either side being re-routed onto the new roundabout; I can't wait! 🙂

5:44, there are literally hundreds of videos on KZitem which will tell you the correct way to handle a situation like this on a roundabout is to accelerate up alongside the trailer, then sound your horn and begin swearing loudly when the driver crosses lanes. After this, you must tailgate the trailer until there is a safe place to overtake (or an unsafe place, or even a pavement or central reservation to go around). Finally, you must pull in front of the van, apply your brakes hard and then exit your vehicle to shout random incoherent stuff about "right of way" and "Learn to drive" before re-entering your vehicle and demonstrating your superior driving skills by accelerating as hard as you can away and into the next dangerous situation.

What's the law on riding mobility scooters in the road? Is it legal? I think it looks incredibly dangerous, especially walking a dog in the road too! Much safer to stick to pavements surely.

That's got mirrors and indicators which almost certainly means it's a class 3 mobility scooter, which may be used on the roads (top speed 8 mph). A class 3 scooter MUST be registered before use on the roads, but does not have to display a registration plate.

Learned to drive in the 1980s when riots would kick off regularly. When driving through Moss Side or into Liverpool, Dad taught me to leave a large enough gap from the car in front at traffic lights or junctions just in case we had to do a quick U-Turn and drive back the way we had come. To this day, I always leave enough room from the car in front to enable me to start a manoeuvre. Even today, it gives you an edge in the situation of a car-jack etc (or in Liverpool where they would probably nick your catalytic converter if you stop long enough at the lights).

It doesn't even need to be that dramatic, just leave enough space so you can manoeuvre in the far more likely scenario of the car in front breaking down

Thousands of delivery drivers all on "L" plates! What is going on? Do they ever intend to take a full test? To ride on "L" plates you must have a provisional licence and have passed the CBT. You then have 2 years to take the next test or renew the CBT. Hmmmm!!!

That last clip shows how easy motorway driving should be - but the amount of people who either don't notice you have an issue, or deliberately box you in behind the lorry, it's really infuriating - much like the I drive in the middle-lane idiots. I also think people should be given mathematical examples of how much time you actually save by driving at 80mph rather than 70mph -> for a 50 mile journey- you only save 5 minutes - but your fuel costs are likely to increase 25%.

This is what I do :) .. Spot the problem ... allow a gap by holding position The motorcyclist had L-plates on ... he seems to have the same attitude as a pedal cyclist. He thinks it's the same thing, but faster. So he naturally undertakes up the inside, probably even drives on the pavement.

Definitely best to hold back to give space and time, i was going around a bend on a country road when an oncoming car was on my side overtaking a bicycle if I was going faster he would have hit me head on, I am not in any hurry to leave this world so always ok with holding back.

Brilliant. Today I followed behind a car who was tailgating another car who was stuck behind coach….the tailgater was so close they kept using their brakes. I stayed back, hardly used my brakes at all. ….and about 3 miles up the road, the tailgater turned off into a housing estate. Why bother tailgating for 3 miles?

Great video Ash. Did 200 miles today on the M6 and the amount of bad drivers out there is scary! People driving at 50mph in the outside lane overtaking nobody to cars weaving in an out. Would you consider a video discussing how to deal with poor lane discipline on the motorways? Keep it up.

On my HGV assessment many years ago I got a "minor" for stopping too close to the car in front. The assessor commented " what if the car in front breaks down you can't get round now as you've not left enough space". Never forgotten that. Time and space needs quadrupling in a bigger / heavier vehicle.

Frankly this is all fairly normal behaviour for most drivers. If most did not act this way, we would end up with gridlock on our very crowded roads. Every day I drive, I get situations like this, and what will normally happen is an acknowledgement with a little wave. There are exceptions, but they are rare. Mostly people behave in a civilised and considerate manner.

This only works for drivers that know what they are doing. I nearly had a massive accident on the Autobahn in Germany the other day. Doing 100mph cruising. Coming round a long bend I could see past the car in front of me that there was a que building up in the distance. I let go of the gas and the distance was really still so far that there was no need to use the brakes. I switch on my alarm light. Suddenly the guy in front slammed the brakes. Going all the way down to 30mph while there was still 200 meters left. He thought he was ''driving extra safely''. I had to slam the brakes as well and was sh't scared someone would crash in the back of me. The guy behind me only just switched lanes in time to fly past me on the right. If you are a good driver you don't just stare at the back of the car in front. You asses the whole situation and If then suddenly the car in front starts doing strange stuff that isn't necessary the car behind can be caught by surprise.

At 5:34, pretty bad for the van to pull away just as the oncoming bus was about to overtake it. Perhaps the van felt it would be helping the bus by getting going again and maybe even it was stopped illegally and hence thought it best to get moving again ASAP. But not a good idea when the bus was pretty much going for the overtake. Should have let the bus carry on and finish it's overtake first. Good job by the cam car though.
@redtela

Re the mobility scooter, holding back actually helps a little to protect them, too. The cam vehicle is dissuading anyone from oncoming causing more problems (thanks to the parked cars either side). Won't solve the problem completely, but will encourage most oncoming not to bother.
