Thank you for all the kind comments! The garbage truck at 2:28 was either in Monrovia or San Marino. I don’t have any more footage - I didn’t have access to any editing facilities in 1999, so I “edited” the video as I shot it. I made this movie for my handicapped son (he was seven at the time) because he loved garbage trucks and I couldn’t find many commercially-made garbage truck movies. We lived in Sierra Madre at the time, and I shot most of this video in the San Gabriel Valley. I carried a camcorder around for about three weeks and shot video whenever we encountered a garbage truck. I wanted to shoot more video at the landfill, but they threw us out!

This video left me speechless. I’ve watched it at least 3 times since being shown this. It’s crazy to think that this is how finding garbage trucks used to be back in 1999. It would’ve been amazing to experience this. The Pasadena footage has to be by far my favorite part of this video. Those waste management trucks were a nice touch too since that is the only footage of those trucks. The newco was also a pleasant surprise to see. Overall this is probably the best video I’ve ever seen. I dont suppose you’d have any other footage stored away of garbage trucks? Definitely going in my favorites

I cannot believe this on how much variety there was back in the late 90's because to be honest I'm a 2002 baby and the most I could remember were the old amrep Octos and OG hardoxes when republic was still Disposal Services at the time and seeing them as a 3 year old in 2005 just lies me wish there was a time machine so I could go back and see my younger self just watching the truck pick up our commercial dumpsters from my old apartment in 2005 (I moved this past December) and when I see how much time has passed it shows what has came and left from the first trucks the Octos then the OG hardoxes third the Peterbilt and Autocar Mcneilus and now the heil freedoms it just shows what I have seen in the past will always be in the past (i miss the 2000's because I didn't have to worry about school and work) so thank you for posting this this shows what I experienced back in the early and late 2000's as a toddler to a 2nd grader so thank you for the video I appreciate in the work you did to make this into almost an hour long so again thank you for bringing back my memories as a toddler thank you (I know once I start talking I begin to ramble on about it)

Thank you Alice for sharing this nostalgic piece of history with the whole community! You have no idea how much I loved American Waste Industries back then before they were bought out. I remember it like yesterday their maxon was rolling down my alley. My second favorite in this video was the Athens Stagg FL, I wish those still ran but those were scrapped a couple years back. The Pasedena CCC was great, that grumble and smoke was great!

Magnificent! Coming from one of the biggest fans of BFI. It was great to see my favorite BFI Waste Services division - Sun Valley and what wonderful units they had! Also, loved see the WMX WHITEGMC C&O MSL. Childhood truck, WMX of NM had a few of those, when I was a little squirt. Great to see a short clip of one in action! So cool you have so many great old time haulers, and amazing sounding rigs, and classic SoCal body mfgs. Excellent! Thoroughly enjoyed everything!

Holy cow this is just incredible! This reminds me of all the old trucks I used to hear when I was younger! Words can't even describe how much I love all these trucks! I just wish you got every single truck in this video running through some gears when taking off, rather than short takeoffs. With these old trucks, I like to hear them running through some gears, so I can hear them shift. I wish you had driving shots of each truck. Other than that, amazing epic video! The sounds of these trucks never get old!

This video is amazing, and showcases the most nostalgic noises I heard growing up as a child. The first Pasadena truck is one of the models that was featured in There Goes A Garbage Truck, a video I used to watch everyday! This video has such a splendid variety of trucks, most of which are now extinct in this day and age. Thank you so much for sharing, it is greatly appreciated by this community!

Blast from the past! So many classics here! Not to mention the many shots in which these beasts spew tons of black smoke! Most of these trucks I saw in person when I was young, such as the Western Waste STAGG's and the ones that stand out are the Peterbilt 310 Amrep Octo Front Loaders from Browning Ferris Industries (BFI). Lovely video to show us the beauty of the past of the refuse collection industry.

Wow, words cannot describe how amazing this video is, I never thought I would see a video of the 2 Western Waste Front Loaders that serviced my house in the early mid 90’s. I see you found Salvador on Lima and Highland at 1:16, and at many other locations in Sierra Madre throughout the video. Salvador would usually do commercial in the morning seen at 7:44, with the Peterbilt Stagg K7000. He would end up grabbing a carry can and help Fransisco, seen at 29:22 and 44:44, finish his large residential route in Sierra Madre. That was great seeing Salvador and Fransisco at 15:56, finishing up on the same block. That clip at 44:44 is interesting because that was not Fransisco’s regular carry can. For a little less than a year his carry can went missing and he borrowed that one, his normal carry can was even larger and he eventually got it back. I remember how all the Western Waste and later on USA Waste/Waste Management employees assisted Sierra Madre in cleaning up the massive amount of Palm Fronds after extreme wind. As soon as Waste Management left Sierra Madre in 2003, it was solely the city that collected Palm Fronds. I was always a fan of NEWCO and their under pocket dumpsters with wheels in the middle, great clip on Orange Grove and Santa Anita at 36:42. I have a picture of another NEWCO Front Loader broken down a few blocks south on Sycamore. NEWCO was a great company and there are still NEWCO dumpsters, logos and all, in Woodcrest. Those clips of all the tan City of Pasadena trucks are great, their Rapid Rails sounded great and their Maxon’s were even louder like at 11:50. I recognize that WMX truck at 9:26 and BFI Amrep at 40:21 were at the Chuck E Cheese in Pasadena. WMmaster626 and I might know the driver of the Western Waste Stagg at 17:22 with adjustable forks in front of the Pasadena DMV. If that is the driver we are thinking of, he used to drive multiple different trucks in Sierra Madre and currently drives for Waste Management. WMmaster626 is going to ask the driver next time he sees him if that is him in the video. That was a great idea going to Scholl Canyon Landfill to film trucks. I have a couple questions, do you know what city the WMX MSL at 2:28 was filmed in? I also have to ask, by chance is there even more footage? You made my day, I alway wished I had footage of my old Western Waste trucks and other trucks around me from many years ago. I cannot thank you enough for posting this historical video.

Hi Alice, another garbage truck fan here. Like everyone else here, I am just thrilled to see such a well made video of all these classic SoCal garbage trucks back in their time. As you might have figured out, people like myself spend a lot of time trying to hunt down old trucks like these that are still running today, which are only getting harder to find. I wanted to let you know that ironically enough, there actually were commercially made garbage truck videos for kids at the time. One of them was “Where the Garbage Goes” kzitem.info/news/bejne/0n1tq4ipjp9qeqg. It was recorded in New Hampshire about 2 years before you recorded this. I think it’s a great thing you didn’t know about it at the time, because if you did we wouldn’t have this amazing video! Thanks for recording so much footage and sharing it with us all these years later!

A Stagg-REP??? The last truck in the video (Western Waste); presumably a Stagg, but note the lower body braces (46:46) are angled in (like an AMREP octo) instead of curved inward. The upper roofline looks like a more typical Stagg. Probably just a running change for a small builder, but I can't say I've ever seen a picture of a Stagg with this feature...very interesting.
