I recently got fitted for new Irons, and extensively tested the p790, Callaway Rogue Pro, Ping I525. For me the Ping I525 came out on top in the end because of their looks, higher launch and more forgiveness for me. I ordered them with a steel ultralight 90 grams shaft which suited me best.

Callaway fitters were at my club about2 months ago and I was fitted with the Rogue ST Max irons. These irons along with the UST Mamila Recoil have done the job. My irons, although very straight were launching much too high in these Florida winds. The fitter worked with me and this combination has helped greatly. More distance and more penetrating ball flight.

Hi Andy, I was fitted into T100S's recently having historically always played Mizuno. At the same time James Robinson done a review in the Takomo 201's which got me thinking. So I decided to take the chance and ordered the Takomo's 4 to PW. I'm blown away with these clubs, looks, performance, sound, forgiveness and distance. Pound for pound, best clubs I've ever gamed. I say this 5 months in after transitioning from Winter to Summer Golf so honeymoon period truly over. I honestly believe golfers are paying on average 50% Brand 50% Performance. I never feel cheap or inadequate in any way on a tee box, matter of fact the opposite, I mostly feel like I'm in an exclusive club gaming these in particular when other players comment on how good they look!

I hit them when getting fitted. They were unbelievable! They were in the running but went with p790s due to just more consistent numbers across the board. I was able to get a 1.49 smash factor with the cobras tho. However I was constantly getting 1.38 with the p790s and didn’t want to get a random rocket. The cobras are a little more off set too

I have bought Mizuno 225 irons , after trying six different irons, received them two months ago. I just love the feel, sound, easy to strike and accuracy. The ball off the gap iron, sand wedge and lob wedge is too hot on short shots therefore i have changed back to Vokey wedges which has given me more control and confidence. The slightly wider top line from my previous AP2 irons, I do not notice as I am concentrating on the dimple on the golf ball!

Andy, I hit all of those irons minus the 790, I also included the 223, JPX forged, Srixons, Callaway forged and WS 9 forged, I replaced my i500s with (drum roll please) with the D7 forged from 2 years ago. I got them new for a used price, but the feel was unlike any other. The top line was a little thicker than I would have liked but the sound and feel were best and there wasn't really any comparison. I also got better spin and launch data which may have come down to the fact that I just struck them better.

I’d choose the P790 because of the looks and the matt finish around the grooves of the face which is the only off putting factor in choosing the Callaway’s. I play TM Rocketballz and really like the smoked matt finish which has never given me bother with glare around the face. They really are a great looking club and I especially like the carbon fibre inserts on the back of the club plus the performance is great 😊

I had the i525’s and sold them after a couple range sessions and rounds. For me, they were too clicky from a feel perspective and the distances were not consistent. The difference in yardage with a center hit and one just a fraction left or right of center were VERY significant. I went back to the drawing board and the PXG’s won out. A few rounds in and they feel incredible and distances are spot on. Difference in yardage from center hit to slightly off center is nominal at best. They’re also straighter than anything I tested in the fitting or experienced on the course vs i525. Worth the extra money and only thing I’m upset about is trying to save some by going with i525 to start.

Nice comparison and video! After comparing looks of all the irons you tested, the only one that absolutely fits my liking and confidence is the I525. Tested the I525 vs Used I500's and purchased the I500's for half the price. Hear me Andy, I love the click of even the I500's. Rather a powerful click sound and feel vs mushy soft feel and sound of forged irons that give feedback that they are going nowhere. This older moderate swing speed player desires the high ball flight to carry greens the I500/525 provides while instilling confidence in looks.

The second choice was the Rogue ST Pro, the P790s were ok but not my favorites. So the best ones for me will hopefully be the 225s or I will be switching between those and the Pings, or I revisit the Rogue St Pros. @@jergernice1 - The 2021 C721 model was more forgiving than the C722 irons are (722s have been reduced in size by 15% with a shorter blade length and have a thinner top line plus possibly just slightly less offset than the 721s, which were by no means a seriously-offset iron model). I think that Tour Edge was influenced to reduce the size, top line and offset by the Champions Tour and now a couple of PGA Tour/Koran Ferry Tour players who are using their irons. I personally play the C721 irons, but I have hit the C722 7-iron a few times and I found that it requires more precise ball-striking to get optimum results when compared with the C721. Still, they are a “player’s distance iron” model, and they do a great job of it when in the right golfer’s hands.
@dougmael
2 жыл бұрын
@@jergernice1 - By the way, Bernhard Langer was a major influence in the ultimate design of the C721/C722 iron model (he played a set if prototypes of this basic design before settling on a set of Exotics Forged Cavity-back irons which have been in his bag since the end of 2021). This is why I think that Tour Edge Golf made the design changes to make the C722 irons a more-compact, more-demanding model.

Any chance you might do a comparison test of forged blade irons, namely the new Miura KM-700 irons and the Fourteen Golf TB-5 or TC-7, or even the RM Forged Blade Limited Edition that is currently sold out, against comparable offerings by Mizuno and Titleist? Both the Miura and Fourteen irons, while they are forged blades, are designed to be a little easier to hit than the most traditional blades. the KM-700s took 5 years to develop. Also, if you do more on shafts, would like to know what you think of the TPT shafts designed in Switzerland. Their biggest point is that they are designed with no spine.

Mizuno Pro 225’s on the way for me 😁. Weird he’s using the older version P790’s.

Compare the 921 Forged with the new Mizuno pro series. That would be cool.

I’ve got P790’s and Callaway ST Pro’s and I’m not sure of them. Probably the TM is better feel but ST Pro goes further.

I have the 2019 p790 love them people talk about the flyer every so often with them I have not experienced that.not sure when I'll replace them but when I do I will test the mizuno 225 really like the look.but for now no change.

I agree the so called ‘flyer’ is urban myth Garry

@@TheAverageGolfer It was real on the 2017 version. A pull from the rough could drop spin & fly 20 yards farther. From my friends that play them, they completely resolved the issue with the 2019 version. They sell like crazy for good reason.

I have P790(2019) thinking about going to PXG but I heard both were very similar especially since PXG sued TM over design of 790s - so I’m lost- I am 8 hdcp

Given that the lofts of all 5 are almost identical being 30* or 30.5* for a 7i the data is directly comparable but of course shaft choice would be key. For me just from the data there are 3 stand out clubs and 2 which struggle slightly. The Rogue is a very good looking iron but the data suggests that it is the worst performer - low spin, low peak height. shallower descent angle. Of course it could just be Andy not getting on with it. Next worst is the 225. For me the best looking iron, the nicest sounding iron but the flight is a little flat. Not a lot worse than the best 3, and maybe a test on a different day would give different results and there is enough spin to have some control. For my top 3 I rank Gen 5 as 3rd. In looks I think PXG have gone backwards compared to the Gen 4, I am not a fan of the two tone look at the back, but have always liked the industrial look of the nuts on the back. This is a very good, if expensive, iron. It gets slightly marked down for having a slightly lower ball flight and spin than the top 2, but tbh the differences are statistically meaningless. As for the top 2, i525 and P790 I cannot split them. P790 has a better sound than the i525, the i525 looks slightly better than the P790, spin rates are effectively identical, you get more peak height and steeper descent angle with the i525 but a little more distance with the P790. It really depends on what you want.

You should to test the 225. Its performance is not 2nd to last in this category

@@djkim23 Maybe not in your hands but look at the numbers Andy got when he tested it. Ball flight was the lowest of the 5, likewise descent angle and spin rate was 4th worst, although the difference between 225's spin rate and Gen 5 is meaningless. As I said in my first comment, a different shaft might make a big difference but based solely on the data Andy collected it is hard to make a case for the 225 being better than the 4th best iron in the test. But it is definitely the best looking iron in the test.

What a pity you did not include Cobra and Srixon (which I personally think is the winner in this category, whether it is the SX5 or 7). Anyhow, nice comparison.

I'm bagging irons which are way more "players'" and way less "distance" than any of these 5, which does bias me more than a touch here. I feel like the Ping is the only one I could play looks-wise, and none of them sound "like a good iron should" (purely personal, again biased by my s20C, Endo forged bladed pieces of Japanese steel-craft). If I was forced to pick one, I guess I'd go Ping as you see the club more and longer than you hear it (and I suppose I'd get used to the sound, after a while, if it does perform well). I'd have to have them in retro specs (and even then, it'd be a shocker, with a 32.5° loft on a 7 iron compared to my 35° gamer).
