Teal. too late but.... if you are removing a thru hull again. get a hole saw that is the size of the hole of the thru hull, and another hole saw the size of the threads of the thru hull thread them both on one mandrel. the smaller saw will guide your larger saw and the larger saw cuts away the body of the thru hull. Makes very quick work of removing thru hulls Bob Might have to buy you a beer sometime down the road. going to be 2021 when we get thru the panama canal SV Guppy

Yes,people in a marina or boatyard come a running when things like this happen. We had a neighbors boat catch on fire. My husband yelled fire,and for me to call 911. Everyone in our docks came with fire extinguishers. Fire trucks arrive after we got it out. Always good to know boaters are quick responders.👍

Just found your site. Noticed in one episode, you used a fram filter ! Not a good choice. Use a Hastings, fleet guard or a/c delco. They are top rated filters. Also noticed that when you pumped out your fuel it was in great condition. Diesel fuel will last for decades if a anti-algae and. Injection cleaner/anti-moisture additive is used. Even when not treated it will be usable if quality fuel filters are used. You and family are on a great adventure, smooth seas and fair winds.
@OnboardLifestyle

Hi and Welcome! We only used the fram filter because our boat came with so many! We are well aware of their reputation, but it seemed wasteful to just throw them out. We have already replaced them with better filters so not to worry. Thanks for your comment and we take in everyone's suggestions. Cheers!

Let me give you a tip on mixing your putty. Use a disposable jar like container to put your compound, epoxy, resin, paint or whatever you have to mix, take a piece of coat hanger (8-10" long) bend a triangle into on end of this piece of coat hanger. Stick into your cordless drill, instant mixer & it makes no bubbles in you batch of what ever your brewing up. When the instructions tell you to mix for at least X amounts of minutes there is a reason, just make it simpler.

Hey Teal, way to go on helping out with all the clamps and etc. For the exhaust ports, isn't the reason they are semi submerged, is to keep a "wet hole" so the exhaust fumes don't go up into the cabin? I've always been taught that exhaust must be a wet exit to mix with the water for safety. You might have some staining too, as others have said. Not sure, but I too agree with no through holes below the water line if possible. Just not sure the exhaust is one of those.

TEAL, Make sure to check the static lift distance from the exhaust silencer Vs the engine Achilles heel fitting to be sure you don't get any water back into the exhaust valves. Teal, great work although having owned a J-30 with similar honeycomb hull that got holed. The outside glass seams to be only 1/4 inch ?? You were extremely lucky when you hit the log, and I mean extremely. Imagine impacting the corner of one barely afloat at anywhere near hull speed.

I’ve been a scaffolder for almost 30 yrs now and rushing around up there with no safety harnesses and trying to hold onto the tarp in that wind was only asking for trouble,I seen where Teal slipped on the truss and caught himself we use a different roof system when doing a structure like that no wood at all we use all tube and clamp for the roof and tie it with doubled up rebar wire, but there is definitely more then one way to do things but when you tie the tarp every couple or few feet there is less chance of the tarp tearing off we also used old parachutes for the roofs of round structures.the boat work is looking great as per the usual work by Teal it will come together quickly now ur ready for paint also very sorry for your guys loss

A clean serface before painting is inportant to the finnish. When i do fairing, i take a grauting scraper. A grouting scraper leaves groves in even lines of a couple of millimeters, then withba normal scraper i go over the groves and fill in the lines after that then i sand back and wash of the duts in between pianting to the final coat of paint. lot of woark but i get a fantastic finnish. Don't know if you know the reason why the exhaust are at water height is the water keeps the exhaust pipe cool and keeps the hull from burning. if the engine is running for a long time the exhaust heats up tremendously.

Teal, when we make wood patterns for Fiberglass molded products we use a sprayable product called Duratec, it comes in various formulations , hi fill , hi gloss, and vinyl ester for corrosion resistant ( under water). The primer versions sand easy and results are great. I know you can't spray but we do touch up with brush sometimes. Probably way to late now. I see you are using polyester fairing primer and barrier coat.......I don't like polyester fairing under water, the barrier coats are just not forever products. I agree raise the exhaust. Hi Teal, how many coats of fairing compound did you put on the transoms? Is that typical for your skimcoat/sanding process?
@whotknots
4 жыл бұрын
Teal I have the impression that most wet exhaust outlets are mounted somewhere easily seen so visual confirmation for flow of raw cooling water can be achieved as safely as possible. Given your exhaust configuration it should not make any difference which side of the hulls the outlets are mounted so what is the reason the outlets on SV Basic are between the hulls under the bridge deck? In most of the presentations by yacht owners I have watched there seems to be a consistent dislike of sail drives. Reasons stated have been excessive complexity and depth of draught along with increased unreliability and greater difficulty as well as higher cost for maintenance. Do your sail drives respond to the helm when you are under power to provide positive steering or are they fixed? If they are fixed, it appears to me as though they might provide reduced water flow over the rudders while maneuvering at low speed. I noticed that as you sailed from your former mooring to the Marina for haul-out there appeared to be a light oil slick on your port side engine wake suggesting there might be a faulty seal on that drive.
