This song contrasts nicely with "Music of the Night". It shows the contrast between the two men. This song mentions 'warm', 'daylight', 'summertime', 'light', 'morning', 'day'; all symbolic of light. The Phantom's "Music of the Night" is as much a love ballad to darkness and night as it is to the girl. It repeatedly mentions 'darkness' and 'night' while pleading that the girl 'close your eyes' and 'turn away' from 'garish, cold, unfeeling light'. The Phantom hopes to convince her to join him in his dark world he has created. In the end, he realizes that she can't or won't. In despair he smashes the mirrors(they reflect light), drops the candlestick holder(his only source of light in his underground world) and steps through the broken mirror further into darkness and isolation as the curtain falls behind him shutting out all light.

This scene broke my heart in the movie. I really felt horrible for the Phantom because he truly loved her but He never learned how to properly love someone and how to act when you love someone. (**cough** **cough**, don't murder, **cough** **cough**) If I'm right it was the scene where they were in the rooftop and the phantom was hidden behind a statue.

Exactly. And the Phantom has himself to blame for this. His murder of the stagehand in the previous scene is the catalyst that drives Christine right into Raoul's willing and waiting arms.

This song, and indeed the entire story of the Phantom, was written by ALW to depict a cosmic conflict involving each one born into this world with normal faculties. There is for sure a being of genius with abilities far beyond human comprehension who is indeed an angel of the night - of darkness. His fate is fixed and for him there is no escape or turning back. He seeks to gain sympathy in his hopeless condition from mortals and succeeds through playing upon the empathy of those who never see him face to face. He pursues those who can be deceived into believing he is the highest source of light - of truth - by convincing the unsuspecting that happiness is found in letting their spirits soar in selfish abandon. He knows that only when those he pursues feed upon their self-centered imaginations can he take possession of them. He tries to convince us that he is true source of light - of genuine love, power, and truth - and that the true source of truth and love is selfish and wants to hinder our happiness. This is demonstrated by how the Phantom - a psychopathic murderer - can gain your sympathy and mine. Christine was taken in, as we all are, but she came to the realization that the Phantom's mind is filled with the lust for blood. She waffled back and forth with longing and desire between the Phantom and Raoul, just as our desires go back and forth between doing wrong and doing right. Raoul wanted to protect her and lead her from darkness into the light, and thus Raoul was the Phantom's mortal enemy. ALW was well acquainted with this conflict on a cosmic scale when he wrote the lyrics and developed the plot for this heart-rending musical - The Phantom of the Opera. The question is: Which one - Raoul or the Phantom - does Weber choose as the real hero? I suspect that he chose the Phantom. I think that most people choose likewise. Which one we choose holds eternal consequences either for our good or to our detriment.

Phantom is chosen as the hero. A tragic one, but the hero nonetheless. Raoul loves Christine like one loves a songbird: caged, pretty, pleasant to hear. The Phantom loves Christine like one loves a wild bird: flying way above, fulfilling its dream. But somewhere down the line, the Phantom forgets that he loves Christine first and foremost for her music, and tries to cage her. And that's when it all goes haywire. But then The Phantom makes the ultimate sacrifice in letting Christine go (and then is weirdly rewarded for it in Love Never Dies, but I never actually considered LND as canon, only a great follow-up fanfic...)

Me: reads the comment Also me: me and the phantom would make a nice couple I'm also ugly 🥲 But seriously I think this comment is gold the phantom didn't really have bad intentions but the was it came off/was shown it shows how he thinks love is because that's what a soap opera is we really can't blame him for it. But I'd love to see more back story from him a window into his life his thoughts and how he started off in the opera house being so young and what it was like when he was born, his parents and what happened during his time with Christine and after I would love to see him have a happier ending🥺

Something I learned that explains so much about Erik, it's a basic part of human psychology. The Love Map. The part of our brain involving love, affection, and companionship. The Love Map controls how we view, receive, and give all of the above topics. And the kicker, it's fully developed by the age of six. Now think of everything Erik went through by the time he was six years old and see if his love for Christine makes more sense.

@the.fairyonearth

We know he did bad things. The world showed him no compassion, which forced him into isolation. He only did such awful things because he knew nothing better; nothing else. We all know he murdered. We know he's a pretty horrible person, but we like him and route for him because we understand his pain, and wish for things to get better for him. He was showed no love in the world, so Christine is the only person he loves. And honestly, I never particularly liked Raoul. He always seemed kind of stuck up and full of himself.. I dunno, I sympathize with the Phantom. I'm weird, and kind of an outcast. I'm the one people look at and think "oh, it's her. The weird one," so that's why I personally like the Phantom. Gosh, now I'm rambling. Sorry! But uh,, I hope that explains why so many people like the Phantom over Raoul.

we know he's not perfect, and we accept that. Raoul doesn't seem to have much in terms of flaws, but Eric does.

Sorry hun...but Raoul has the personality of a stick. So utterly boring and cliché. The Phantom is one of the most interesting and complex characters written and that's what we love about him.

The only reason why Erik's a bad guy was because while it is his fault for the choices he made, they were made out of pain and anger for everyone else. The whole world never showed him any love or compassion, not even his mother loved or cared for him, all he ever knew was anger and pain, anger at the world for treating him like a monster just because of his face. So its not entirely Erik's fault that he became a monster, and after everything he's been through, all he needs and wants is someone to love and care for him. And for someone who is lonely and desperate, I can understand why he turned to murder and deception, because all he ever knew was darkness and he doesn't know any better. So thats why I root for Erik and Christine, because I sympathize greatly for Erik. And also, I find Raoul kinda boring considering he's just a wealthy aristocrat, whereas Erik's an artist, an architect, a musician, a magician, and he's a genius in alot of things.

Every time I hear this song, I'm reminded of the first girl I was ever truly in love with. I then revert to sympathizing with Erik, because I too had my heart broken by the girl I loved when she moved onto another guy without even giving me a chance to prove myself. This song has quite the effect on me.

I'va always been one for Raoul and Chrstine. In the end, he's willing to give himself up for Christine when the Phantom tells Christine if she doesn't marry him he'll hang Raoul, but he tells her she doesn't have to. But, I get how if he didn't love Christine, he wouldn't have let her go.

Because of the virus we can’t have a chorus concert and our classes are smaller so our teacher is giving us more voice lessons. I chose this song to work on because I want to work on my range, also I just really like this song

Christine and Raoul hadn't seen each other in more than ten years by this point and when they last saw each other it was simple friendship as the son of obviously wealthy parents and the daughter of a musician (even a famous one) would not have seen much of each other.
