Cher's solo debut album 1965 produced by Sonny Bono while he was working at Phil Spector's "wall of sound" studio. Cher also preformed as a backup singer with the ronettes, righteous brothers, etc. Can hear the wall of sound acoustics.

On this day in 1965 {May 22nd} Cher performed "All I Really Want To Do" on the Los Angeles-based music variety syndicated television program, 'Shivaree'... Six weeks later her version entered Billboard's Top 100 chart at position #86, and that very same week the Byrds' version entered at position #83... And on August 15th, 1965 Cher peaked at #15 {for 2 weeks}, while that same week the Byrds peaked at #40 {for 1 week}...

As I said somewhere else, I was disappointed in the Byrds version, being used to Cher's. Gene Clark's I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, which was on the flip side, was a lot better, and showed how adept the Byrds were with original material and they could be independent of Dylan.

According to Wikipedia, Roger McGuinn said they liked Cher's version so much that they just turned their single over. Smart move, because the song on the B side was Gene's I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better, demonstrating that the Byrds weren't solely dependent on Dylan and had original material.

Why do you say that? It sounds just like him singing. I know that on the video, she is singing both parts while Sonny just stands there. But I think they were doing that for a little bit of comedy (which they were known for back in the early 60's). Like if she was just lip syncing his part to be a little bit fun. You may be right. This is, without a doubt, Sonny and Cher. "Beat or cheat or mistreat you" is Sonny's first line. They exchange every other verse. Cher, of course, sings the chorus solo. And beautifully I might add. The only reason I can think of for this deception is that Cher may have been signed as a single for Liberty Records while Atco had the rights to Sonny and Cher as a couple. And this was the single they wanted to use to launch Cher as a solo act (even thought it was an obvious duet). No one seems to have noticed obviously as Cher has been credited since '65 at the sole vocalist. The proof is their live performance of "All I Really Want to Do" on their TV show (also viewable here on KZitem). Sonny's verses are plain to see.

Why is this song Cher when Sonny sings in it. Some stupid record contract. He was the one with musical talent. She had none, and could not find middle C on a piano. She admitted that at his funeral.
