Sometimes just saying the words, is the miracle you need. Sometimes even when someone isn't being lovable, or is having problems, they need to hear it most. My parents always said it to us, and freely. It made us able to feel it, and also say it freely to the other ones we love. It made us all closer, and now that they are both gone, I can still hear them saying the words, and the hug that it brings! @@hypnos9336

@@Lolo7353zzz Yup, neither one was ever truly mean or hateful, you could sense their goodness even through their ignorance of each other’s cultures. But they evolved. You have to give people that chance! In many episodes, the Jefferson's came over for Archie's Birthday, the Mortgage Burning Party, etc. They kind of became friends. Simple times? Are you serious? The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964, anti-interracial marriage laws were struck down in the late 1960s. Black people were just STARTING to get rights in the 1970s and be equals. Just starting. I know people like to say Archie Bunker was a bigot with a heart of gold, but Bunker was still a closed-minded entitled bigot, and George Jefferson had reactionary bigotry to the white bigotry he grew up with from people like Archie Bunker.

Looking back it was really amazing that Norman Lear had the courage to make George Jefferson such a flawed man. Do y’all get that they did shows like this to be subversive and counter culture. Not that it was funny. Not that people had thicker skins and saying the n word as you put it was ok. It wasn’t. Comedians write and joke from an angle to show society itself. They wrote these shows and jokes because comedians make the unfunny and horrible funny. They make it funny to tell us uncomfortable truths about ourselves and most of you feel like “oh those were the good ole days when we could be completely racist and effed up and how nice it would be to say ugly stuff to each other’s face”. It’s like the point of these shows went straight over most of your heads.
