The Secret History my favorite book of all time!! There are so many beautiful paragraphs to read over and over again, the writing is just *chef's kiss*. It has an unreliable narrator and there is not a single character with morals😭 The book is meant to satirize pretentious people in academia. The characters in this book romanticize everything which leads them to committing immoral acts for the sake of beauty. Idk why I felt the need to give this introduction lol, I just hope you end up loving The Secret History!! Happy October

I recommend the haunting of bly manor. It's a 10 ep show set in the 1980s with ghosts as allegories for mental health and grief. The main cast is perfect for their roles, and also there are saphics, so you know it's superior.

one of my favourite horror movies (it isn't really horror in the traditional sense, but it's more like a psychological thriller) is se7en, starring brad pitt and morgan freeman!! it's a david fincher film and it's so well directed and he builds the suspense throughout the film so impeccably, and the whole film had me straight up sweating for 2 hours! i'm not sure if it's your thing but i'd recommend it to anyone!

Okay horror movie recs: 1. Hereditary (obviously) literally gives me chills everytime I think about it and I'm too scared to watch it again. 2. The Descent - what's more fall than the Appalachian mountains?? Nothing can compete. 3. Texas Chainsaw! Old, but honestly still scares the pants off of me. 4. Let's scare Jessica to Death - 70s hidden gem that spooked me to my core, very brisk fall vibes

I rewatched Dead Poets Society last year for the first time in years and it jumped on my list of all-time favorite movies. My family and I went to the cider mill one day and when we got home I just really wanted to watch a quintessential fall movie and I chose Dead Poets Society. I had seen it a few times growing up, but I completely forgot about certain events in the movie and cried sooo much. I honestly went through a period where I thought it was an overrated movie because I think there were a bunch of people first discovering it. But I'm stupid for even thinking of it as overrated, oh my god, it's fine, it has been rectified. I love Shirley Jackson and Edgar Allan Poe! Have you seen any of the Roger Corman/Vincent Price adaptations? My favorite is The Masque of the Red Death but House of Usher comes in a close second. I feel like I'm going to end up watching way more movies than getting any significant amount of reading done this month, but I'm going to try to balance it! Some books on my tbr are Perfume by Patrick Suskind, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter, continuing in the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, I also need to continue The Raven Cycle, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova would be nice to get to, and I recently bought The Betrayals by Bridget Collins which seems great for this month or next. There's probably more I could name but I'll move on to films, now. I have a huge list of movies I want to watch but some of my favorites for this time of year are Interview With The Vampire, Sweeney Todd, Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Poe adaptations, Silence of the Lambs, The Innocents, Nosferatu (1922), Evil Dead (1981), Stoker, ParaNorman, and The Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary Live at the Royal Albert Hall production. sorry, I'm being lazy and not including years. OH, and specifically November I usually rewatch Twin Peaks, which is my favorite TV show!!! It takes place in February for the most part but there's so much pie and it's so cozy looking and has supernatural-ish elements, so to me it fits perfectly for November. right now my mind is very much focused on watching scary/horror movies in October and then I'll move on to atmospheric, moody, things that vibe better with the rest of the year instead of this month specifically. I hope you like The Secret History!! It'll definitely be interesting to hear your thoughts with The Goldfinch being one of your favorite books :)

i am OBSESSED with the hauting of hill house -the show!! (i haven't read the book yet) it's so so good, i've watched it twice now and plan on watching again this year, it's ridiculous how good it is. the way mike flanagan tells this story is devastating but so moving i sometimes forget it's a horror show and just get emotional lol i think it's one of my favourite shows of all time tbh oh and also a favourite film that i think fits really well for autumn is MARROWBONE!! i mean it's scary and sweet and sad and all that good stuff, i love it

Some lovely recs! Scary movies, hm, can be very subjective what scares one, maybe that's why you haven't found one yet? But honestly I personally do not think being terrified is synonymous with being a great a horror movie. Nonetheless, a few that got to me: "Lights Out", "Mama", "The Descent"(because I am a bit claustrophobic), the first third of "Jeepers Creepers" had me so on the edge of my seat, similarly the ending of "Rec", also that stupid clown doll in "Poltergeist" scared me as a kid and I'm still not over it. And not traditionally scary but worth a watch for a book reading King fan "In the Mouth of Madness".
