BMW M5 Enters New Era with Electrified Powertrain
The iconic BMW M5 is set to redefine high-performance luxury sedans with its seventh-generation model, unveiled for the 2025 model year. This latest iteration marks a significant milestone in the M5's 40-year history, introducing electrification to the legendary nameplate for the first time.
At the heart of the new M5 is a potent M HYBRID system, combining a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an electric motor. This powerplant delivers an impressive 727 horsepower and a staggering 737 lb-ft of torque. The combustion engine alone produces 585 hp, while the electric motor contributes an additional 197 hp.
Performance figures are expectedly breathtaking, with BMW claiming a 0-62 mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, but can be raised to 189 mph with the optional M Driver's Package.
The M5's electrification isn't just about raw power. BMW has equipped the sedan with a substantial 18.6 kWh battery pack, enabling an all-electric range of up to 43 miles (WLTP) - an impressive figure for a performance hybrid. In EV mode, the M5 can reach speeds of up to 87 mph.
Power is sent to all four wheels through BMW's M xDrive system and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Drivers can select between various modes, including a rear-wheel-drive only setting for purists seeking a more traditional M car experience.
Visually, the new M5 stands out with aggressive styling cues, including prominent wheel arches, sculpted side skirts, and a muscular front apron. The interior receives the expected M treatment, with sport seats, a new M-specific steering wheel, and the latest BMW Curved Display featuring performance-oriented graphics.
Chassis upgrades include adaptive M suspension, Integral Active Steering, and available carbon-ceramic brakes. The M5 rides on staggered 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, wrapped in high-performance tires.
Tech features abound, with the latest iteration of BMW's iDrive system running on OS 8.5. A wide array of driver assistance systems comes standard, with more advanced features available as options.
The 2025 BMW M5 is set to make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024, with production beginning shortly after. Sales are slated to start in November 2024, alongside the introduction of an M5 Touring wagon variant.
While official pricing hasn't been announced, expect the new M5 to command a premium over its predecessor, reflecting its advanced hybrid powertrain and increased performance capabilities. The M5 will face stiff competition from other high-performance luxury sedans, but its blend of electrification and traditional M car dynamics could give it a significant edge in the segment.
With its impressive power, advanced technology, and improved efficiency, the 2025 BMW M5 looks poised to continue the model's legacy as a benchmark in the high-performance sedan market.
