I'm surprised there aren't more views. I have been obsessed with cobalt blue since childhood. It's not my favorite color (green), but the color that's almost elusive yet provocative. Green is just nature and soulful, but cobalt is regal and a goal to achieved.

Oh, dear! From the Joni Mitchell album, to every color of blue in existence, I will never be able to have enough blue!! Indigo and indanthrene are so moody, manganese and cerulean are so cheery! I know Lorca's poem was about green, but blues are just a complete wonder of the world!! I should get a dog just to name it Blue!! Perhaps this is because I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains or is it why I moved here so many years ago and kept moving back every time someone convinced me that greener pastures were a good idea? (No, they weren't!) Okay... calming down... swoon over... Thank you!

the cobalt azure is expensiv. like all the cobalts. but I like phtalo blue by schmincke as well (must be a greenish one) - also the one by other brands. they are cheaper then cobalt azure. although phtalo blue from schmincke does look different than the the phatlo blue by DS here in the video. but it can be handy, to use a cheaper blue esp. for exercises

That Cobalt Azure from Schminke has the same pigment number as Daniel Smith's Cerulean. I have it in my Schminke set and am not impressed with it. However, it is fine for a clear blue sky where you want the lightest blue to be. Most colors will easily overpower it. So, I need to use a lot of it in order to get a decent green. I have a tube of Mayan Blue Genuine. I purchased it from Daniel Smith and have loved this color. It can be compared with Prussian Blue. It has a wide range of values depending upon the ratio of paint to water. I painted a winter scene using only Mayan Blue Genuine. I also like the fact that the paint lifts extremely well, even when it is dry.

Hmmm, an interesting question. My gut tells me an extra blue Payne's grey could do the trick. But you'll really have to look at the different brands, and find an extra blue one, as most are too muted (: Perhaps even adding a bit of French Ultramarine to it could work. Let me know if you figure this one out!

three questions, did you know, that the 'real' cerulean blue by schmincke, that compares to other brands is called helio cerulean? would you try that and for what specifically? (ok two questions in one here) I wonder, if sky colour closer to the see, like in Israel looks more on point with that. because in central (and northern!?) europe the better choice is ultramarine blue - generally speaking of course. last question: you seem to know white nights and schmincke well now, that you used both for quite some time. can you tell, what seperates these two? I have 28 pan set of white nights. I got these as beginner, right after the disapointing winsor newton cotman starter 12pan set. at first, I liked the bold colours. but apart from that, that they did look good swatched, I found them hard to use/control. also I didn't like, that the water got dirty so quickly and some paints had a strange segmenation. now I learn painting with a teacher using only schmincke, a few rembrandt's in tubes - I don't want to go back. but there are so many people so happy with white nights, I wonder, what did I miss? is it only hard to use for beginners? I am not into illustrations of creating small post cards. maybe the subject and size of the work does play a role. not sure. but I find it hard to explain to others, why exactly I wouldn't go back. although once I pulled the w.night set out to get a particular intense red. but suddenly I discovered, I could get the same intensity with one of the transparent reds I had from schmincke. the water content made it right. so now I don't even need their reds. what about these two brands?

Nice video - I really liked the comparison and I'm very jealous of that mayan blue shade! I also wanted to mention (and I hope you don't mind - I just thought you'd be interested) that azure has a slightly different pronunciation than what you were using, but I'm not sure if it's just accent. Usually it's pronounced "azher" with the zh sibilant, like in vision and a soft vowel.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and paints with us! You have a lovely collection. I just have a few questions. Is your Schmincke Cerulean a hue? Is that from a tube or pan? I have the Helio Cerulean (half pan) and it is quite pigmented! Also, I don't see any granulation on your Cobalt Azure, I thought it was a granulating pigment. I have yet to get it, but I have the dot card with it on there. It looks beautiful. My cobalt light, is one that is very hard to rewet and very lightly pigmented. I have to work hard to get it on my brush.
@LironYan

Thank you 😊🙏🏼 To answer some of your questions: 1. I beliebe it's a hue, and it's from a tube (: 2. The Cobalt Azure, I'm really unsure! I have several cobalts, perhaps I mixed the two. I'll have to take a look later (don't have these specific tubes with me now). Sorry about the Cobalt Light - I really love colours that re-wet easily too!

I've just come across your channel a few weeks ago, and I truly enjoy your videos! I have a question that I'm hoping you can take a moment to answer. I'm relatively new to watercolor. As I'm adding colors to my "collection", I'm a bit stumped. I've been purchasing several brands of tube paints (Daniel Smith, Windsor Newton Pro., Schmincke, Sennelier) to see which brand I prefer for what. Here's my question: when creating my swatches, I'm stuck between organizing them by brand, or by color family (ie:blues, reds, etc. for all brands). Do you have a preference? Which do you think is most effective? TIA, for letting me know!
@LironYan
6 жыл бұрын
First - welcome to my channel! 😊🙏🏼 Happy to hear you enjoy. Regarding your question, I'll tell you the way I do it, and the rationale behind it. I don't tend to mix different brands in my paintings. I sometimes will if I'm doing an exercise for myself, but usually I don't mix them. I don't have a good reason for that, aside from the fact they are usually stored in different palettes. *But in any case, from that perspective I would create different swatches for each brand.* However, if you plan on using all of them freely, and based on the color itself, rather than the brand - I'd swatch EVERYTHING together. If you plan to let them all mix in your art - you might as well have a comparison off ALL of them together 🙂 As a side note, I barely create any swatches. I do it mainly for videos here 😉 I hope this helps!

Nice video! Just today I was researching indigo and Payne’s grey a bit. Do you have any opinion about those in comparison? I also looked at my cerulean blues and found that some brands mix white into it, while others use single pigment. Not sure which is the best option here. I try to avoid colors that are mixed with white, unless it’s Buff Titanium or a very light color.
@LironYan
5 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, I would recommend to mix your own Payne’s grey, unless it’s something you need VERY often (: Otherwise I’d rather stick to the more vibrant blues, because it’s hard to turn something dull to vibrant, but it’s easy the other way around. I hope that helps! I don’t know much about colors that also have white in them. Haven’t had that kind of thing yet (:
