Absolutely the best film that I have seen in a very very long time. This is the only film that I have ever seen in a London cinema that had everyone rooted to their seats long after the lights came back on & had everyone crying. I have never experienced anything like it before. Usually people get up as soon as the ending credits are rolling, but not for this film. For me the music also added an extra layer & maybe that's because I was in my teens when the songs were in the charts (except the Blur song used for the nightclub scene).. How was this not nominated for any Oscars? Makes no sense 😡. Andrew Scott is a fantastic actor. 10/10 for all the performances, the story, cinematography, direction etc etc 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Literally do not care about what any critics or twitter weirdos have to say, I don't even think it's about the actors, it's the fact that it's a story about ghosts (ghosts as in actual ghosts, memories, old beliefs, etc whatever) actually holding you back. The theme is so under-explored. You are so stuck in the past that you can't even see whats in front of you.

Yes a masterpiece. Have now seen it three times. Not only robbed of any Oscar noms but got lots of BAFTA noms but not one for Andrew Scott!?!? (I am 80, many years a fan of Andrew Scott). One very interesting fact. The family scenes are filmed in the actual childhood home of writer/ director Andrew Haigh !

Both emotional and tender, this film really gets you in the heart. Such realistic dialogue, like the dialogue in Haigh's film "Weekend." Fascinating fact: the house they filmed in was Haigh's actual childhood home.

Thank you for sharing your viewing experience and review! I’ve seen this movie three times and cried like a baby. This film is a masterpiece in so many ways. Haigh has always been a great storyteller for the LGBTQIA+ community, but what he has done with AOUS is creating this psychologically and emotional “mirror” for all who have experienced loneliness and have grieved. Equally important is that this speaks volumes especially for gay men of my generation. We grew up in the fear and shadow of AIDS, we were taught that being us meant we would either be alone or die from a horrible disease, We grew up learning how to hide ourselves, which in turn, taught us how to hate ourselves and distrust others. The grief experienced by Adam is the grief of his family, his childhood, and his inability to establish intimate bond. The whole movie is a not only a beautiful meditation, but an astute portrayal of someone on a therapeutic journey, working through his childhood trauma. It truly is frustrating that the Academy failed to recognize this movie in any way, which in my opinion, is indicative of the Academy being bogged down by politics. I am glad though that the London Critics, BAFTA (to a certain extent, as their snub on Andrew Scott is beyond ridiculous), Indie Spirit Awards, GLAAD and the Dorian Awards understand how to recognize excellence based on merit. There is not a single film released in 2023/early 2024 that is as emotionally raw and succinct as AOUS.

This was my number one film of 2023... and I watched a lot of movies (I try to watch everything so I can have a proper opinion at Oscar time). The fact that this film was ignored by the Academy is an even bigger snub than Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie missing out. But it seems it was missed by a lot of people, unfortunately... I only hope that changes once it hits streaming (kind of like how Saltburn got more attention once it did). As for the Oscars lack of attention.... I have thought on it and blame two things. A too-late release date and not enough marketing before Oscar voting happened. The elements of an Oscar film are definitely there, especially the acting.... like my God, the whole cast was amazing. Unfortunately if people don't watch your movie, none of that matters. And I think that's why it was ignored for the most part when it came to awards. If people do end up streaming it later, I think this is one of those films that in hindsight, people are gonna be angry at how it was ignored... the way that those of us who have already seen it feel now.

Increasingly over the past few years, the Oscars exhibit serious cronyism and refuse to consider the best performances. Andrew Scott's performance in AOUS is remarkable, detailed, perceptive, sensitive and remarkably vulnerable. Far too delicate, intelligent and nuanced for the Oscar lot, just as was Benedict Cumberbatch's performance in The Power Of The Dog beforehand.

This is my first time to find you… why do I feel like I’ve known you before? Maybe you sorta remind me of me, (except you’re great looking.) This film is so beautiful. I feel like he was writing a script with him and his parents to resolve issues that he never got to say to them when they were alive. They look the same as they did at their death because that was the last memory he had of how they looked. He was thinking of the past and couldn’t imagine them as they would look older. The scene where they are decorating the Christmas tree and Adam had that wide eyed look of childhood wonder on his face was amazing. Him being on his knees gives the vantage point of seeing them in scale as when he was a little boy. And his mother looking down at him singing “You were always on my mind” broke my heart. She knew she didn’t and lost her chance at her death… and dad helping him put the angel on the tree… it’s all so lonely. And when Harry first came to Adam’s door, he was pleading for a chance, anything, that could give him the slightest bit of reason to stay alive. And he was turned away… so he went and un-alived himself hoping that would cure his loneliness. I know what it is to have no one in your life that will be there for you when you reach out your hand. The next day, Adam asks if he would like some whiskey and he said, “no, I’ve stopped drinking.” That was the first hint he was dead, but he didn’t know it. He didn’t realize he was dead until he saw Adam’s parents through the window of the door. Adam’s head was stuck in so much unreality, it never occurred to him that Harry was gone. But after he finds Harry’s body cuddling the empty Japanese whiskey bottle, we realize that was the only way he could cope with his loneliness and rejection, in a bottle. The next scene tore me apart when Harry is there with the bottle with liquid still in it. He starts crying, “Why didn’t anybody find me?!” When he asks, “I’m in there, aren’t I? I don’t want you to see me like that!” Adam says you’re not in there. You’re in here, with me. (Meaning you are in my heart.) Then Adam says let’s go upstairs… (meaning Heaven.) And Harry says he’s scared and lets his spirit be released… in the same body position that he was in when he died. I don’t know you or where you are from, but I do know this. You’ll never be alone. You have such a great heart, you’re so good looking, your boyfriend will be very lucky. And I’m here in Dallas, if ever you need someone.

Ok. Let me clear up the Oscar snub mystery. In order to be in consideration for the Oscars, the film had to be released for one week in Los Angeles and one week in New York before the last day of the year. They released it too close to the deadline in ONE small theater in L.A., ONE small theater in N.Y. and ONE small art house theater in Dallas. (since Dallas is the only city in the United States that is allowed to have its own rating system. I’ve been a member of that ratings board. I was young but most of the board is old enough to remember when “talkies” was a “thing.” They want to give a film an X rating for LIGHTLY SUGGESTED nudity.) So, since it was only in 3 small theaters, no one had heard of it until Paul Mascal was nominated for a BAFTA as a Supporting Actor. It was a complete failure on the part of the marketing team of this film not being nominated. Otherwise, it would have been. Especially Mascal. Oscar loves him. And Scott deserved it. By the time the short list of the top 15 in each category (semi-finals) were announced, it was too late. It wasn’t because the film wasn’t deserving, it was marketing plus timing.

Actually, the ending ruined it for me. I mean, how much shit does this Adam has to go through in his life? I would have needed a bit of hope at the end, which I personally couldn't see. But maybe I just didn't understand it 🤷 Absolutely agree on everything that has been said about the acting, especially Andrew Scott. And the sobbing. Saw the film yesterday and am still crying today.
