I have a GE vacuum tube portable (model 600) that I like to listen to, at night particularly after 10PM to maybe 6AM I can hear AM 740 Zoomer radio from Toronto. I can especially here it when I alligator clip the loop antenna to my amateur radio dipole antenna outside. During that time they play really old music that funnily enough was probably heard in it’s lifetime. Cool thing is that I think it has the original tubes when it was new since they’re all GE and has all the old components. The radio is a great little receiver, although I have to be careful not to run it for long since I have use 10 9v cells for the B+ and that costs about $30. Eventually I’ll get some rechargeable 9 volt cells.

Uh, theres no contesting modern sound and build quality. Modern materials and production techniques make sure of that. Also, consider how hes recording the sound, and just not-thrown-about that radio is. Im not saying this sounds bad, but it sounds vintage. There would be no mistaking it for a modern piece. It definitely sounds "Old". Im not biased either as some of my favorite retro sets are from the late 80s, early 90s, when build quality and audio quality were at their worst for 'home' equipment. All im saying is the idea that this is somehow superior to new stuff is completely unfounded :) *Goes back to recording music on VHS tapes for old-school shits and giggles*

That's cool that you mentioned the interlock. I was intrigued by the mention of an interlock on my television and was very surprised when I removed the back without a problem. I then figured that the interlock was that piece of metal keeping the power cord attached to the back. But it's kind of in an abstract way that they describe it. They say the interlock prevents you from accessing dangerous electrical shocks. Yeah, if the TV cannot be plugged in there are no electrical shocks to be had... But it's a pretty abstract way to say it huh.

The direct audio output of this radio sounds very good (especially for its age), almost as if it were a wideband (aka "AM Wide") tuner, as some AM Stereo and "AMAX"-certified AM radios have --the audio seems to have a bit more high frequency response above the usual 5-6 KHz limit that a regular AM radio has...

The glowing tubes was just so cool. I still remember we had an old black and white TV that I guess was a 14 inche or so. I guess it was a 60's model and had smaller tubes and I still remember it took several mins to warm up and I specifically remember the glowing tubes inside. I guess that is a heat sink surrounding that one front tube?

Adding on your comment about the vanishing of AM Stations; In France, there is only one left ! FRA - «Bretagne 5» in Collinée - 10 kW 0800-1600, 5 kW 1600-0800; Sad times indeed ! Thanks for our UK neighbors tho, we can at least listen to the BBC !
@barryholt9564

I'm coming kind of late to this but - I'm gutted... Say it isn't so! As a kid in the 80’s I would scan up and down the band late into the night. I was in Ireland so obviously I could get the BBC in the UK. I'd pick up German Stations, and Dutch, no doubt; but there was No Question about who was 'Runnin' ting' on MW! If the Sovs were throwing their weight about on SW- you didn't even have to put up the aerial to pick up their creepy damn 'Woodpecker'- Then between between 190 and 535metres, the French just OWNED the joint. French (or French speaking, anyway) stations just segued into one another- CLIMBED all over one another, seemed like! And I was listening hundreds of miles away! WHAT did it sound like on the British South Coast- never mind from actually INSIDE 'The Hexagon'! And now they're all gone, the one holdout: FRA "Bretagne 5" in Collinée surely now gone the way of the others as well. It's sad... Things change; it's inevitable- and for 99% of situations, FM, Digital Audio Broadcasting or via the Web make more sense as a way to listen: but AM in Europe without it's traditional end-to-end 'Francophany' is like the ocean without whalesong. It's like the morning without birdsong- it's just wrong! No doubt there are lights in the darkness: Belgium, Luxembourg, Monaco? I believe Algeria is still holding the fort on Long Wave... ironically I can't hear them because they share the wavelength with Ireland's last AM station, RTE1. Speaking of Africa, the French (and the Belgians) were all over that place bringing Christianity, civilization & punitive amputations to the grateful natives (the Christian message of peace & tolerance was clearly one that 'took' at any rate! Politics aside, my guess is that the old tech still plays a role and that DAB and broadband don't have much traction particularly in rural areas; or maybe it turns out that Africa is the perfect place for the 'roll-out' of the new technology... Frankly, I'm not enough of a radio hobbyist to know. You've also got French Guyana though, the South Pacific, etc., Aaand... Quebec. If there isn't radio in French on AM in Quebec, then I'll eat my hat! For me, none of it is the same but at least they represent a fire still burning in the grate. May it continue to do so!t

Maan. I would listen to AM Radio all Day and Night if I had the Choice of so many Stations in Germany like in the USA. I'm jealous ;-) When I have the chance to come to America again I will bring my restored Philips Jupiter BD500. It's a beautiful AM only Radio from 1950... The only german News I get on Shortwave is the german Program from "The Voice of Turkey" sometimes. Or Absolute Radio on MW or BBC World Service on 200KHz LW. Both very good Stations from England, but very weak in my Area. I miss "Deutschlandfunk" on 153KHz so much. I used to listen almost every Day. They switched it off on December '15. It's just more than annoying for a Radio Collector trying to "fish" for some listenable Content in the abandoned Waves of Europe...

I listen to my 1953 RCA Victor radio on a regular basis... it too has all its original capacitors and works perfectly fine without even the slightest sign that they're getting on. Nice radio, but this was a year before they added the Ford logo to its product and rebrand itself as Philco/Ford. After Philco added the Ford name, they continued to make the same clock radio as a solid state unit under the Philco/Ford name.
