You're not supposed to clean filter medium with tap water because the chlorine kills all your beneficial bacteria and you'll have a massive ammonia spike - all your fish will die.

You need to swap the filter Media around, the sponge should be at the bottom, that will catch all the major crap and the then the rest at the top.. the water goes down the tube and then up the media, that is why the pump is at the top. most cannister filter work the same. water flows down and then through the media to the top and pump back into your tank.

I always thought you shouldn’t clean your filter using tap water because you lose a lot of beneficial bacteria, instead clean your filter using the water from your tank ?
@LifeOfSplatty

Yes that is true. However I feel using the pressure from tap water gets a better clean. I only use tank water to clean the bio balls as most of the bacteria is stored there.

@@LifeOfSplatty i used to have to clean thick gunk of the sponge and floss. I realised it was vecause i was killing the bacteria every time i washed under the tap. I stoped that and used tank water and now my filter lasts for 6 monts instead of 1 and it still isnt as dirty.

@@LifeOfSplattyBuddy everyone's saying the same thing. Washing the contents under untreated tap water simply defeats to whole purpose of having such a filter. This filter isnt the greatest but has enough space to contain a decent amount of bio media. General rule of thumb is 1kg of bio media for every 100 liters. Bio balls wont have 1/4 of the bacteria as the ceramic rings and even the ceramic is not great. Biohome Ultimate are 100 times better. The bioballs simply trap larger debris and ideally better used prior to your mechanical filtration.

nice vid mate, I wash all sponges and pads the same, as there only mechanical in this situation. The only thing I would change with your cleaning process is do not wash the ceramic rocks with tap water, that's probably 95% of your biological filtration, bio balls do very little compared to those. I just dunk them a few times in the water left in the canister after removing all the trays.

Just watched your video, I bought this filter about 6mths ago, I had a problem with the inlet and outlet pipe fixture which sits on top of the head cap, when pushed the hose onto the fitting and tightend the locking nut onto the hose it leaked! I complained and was sent a new one straight away, I've not had a problem since, I have my spraybar over my wavemaker also, I put my bio balls ontop, ceramic parts in next and carbon at bottom and use floss on all. My tank is clear and I keep a pair of Green Terrors in this tank, I clean my filter out every 2 months and only use tank water.

i run the SunSun version of these filters, you'll find things generally get less filthy if you place all your sponge filters on the bottom tray and all your other media above it, personally i wouldn't put any floss above the bottom filter as it will trap any tiny particles that get past your sponge on the first go and slowly clog up your rings, just let it pass through and get trapped on the next flow through. check out a guy called pondguru who shows a good method of setting up an all pond.

I was thinking mines running the opposite way too... Which means it's clogging the media instead of the sponges. Chlorine will not hurt your media without prolonged exposure, tap water is fine. If it was in the water 10 minutes yeah you'll do some damage to your bacteria colonies. But for the sake of a rinse it's fine

No no no you don't use tap water to clean filter pads your messing up the cycle.. what you do is get a bucket with water from your tank and clean the pads in that water only.. then put water from your tank in your filter and put bk together. Top the water bk up in your tank and done. plus your cleaning it to much once every 3 months would be fine as its got the good stuff in that your tank needs.. do a 25% water change once a month. Only do more if there is a problem.

Shouldn’t be using tap water to clean out your biological media especially. The ceramic rings is where your beneficial bacteria lives. Bio balls hold next to nothing in comparison. I think the only reason the fish aren’t dying is because it’s only lightly stocked.

This is bad advice as cleaning it with fresh water from the tap can crash your cycle, it's better to take a few buckets of water from your tank and clean it with this and the only thing which can be difficult to clean is the floss sponge so I replace it a couple of times a year and the other sponge and media is enough not to affect your cycling
