@@RetroComparisons It was clearly superior to the NES in terms of visual quality. The sound was the only thing you could say was a tie between the two, as you just know the limitations of 8-BIT sound, it is what it is (I love 8-BIT music by the way, there's something really nostalgic and endearing about it). The sheer depth of colour, the resolution and the sprite density on screen was enough to see a clear night and day difference between the SMS and the NES, not to mention the SMS did not suffer the horrible sprite flickering and scroll clipping like the NES did, even when pushed to its limits. Your video here illustrates that there wasn't as much a gulf in quality between the SMS and the MD as it would suggest down on paper and is a demonstration of what quality care in development can produce, no matter how limited the resources on deck.

@@Longlostpuss Very well said! The NES had the advantage of having a huge and great library (largely because of Nintendo's monopoly of the market at the time) but the SMS was leagues ahead in terms of visuals. Wow that's a huge jump in technology! When I was young my brother and I played on our parent's 2600 but finally got our own console in the form of the Genesis so we missed the 8 bit generation. I always thought that was a massive leap but going from 8 bit 2D to 3D with CD quality audio is a literal game changer. Road Rash does look stunning for an 8 bit console version. The music is lackluster but at least the gameplay is still really solid.

Good thing that the Mega Drive is backwards compatible with the Master System as both systems are great, there are many shared titles that are different games between them too, such as Castle of Illusion, Aladdin and more. @@RetroComparisons it's possible you'll appreciate what's best from the SMS now better than then, you'll have no nostalgia mostly, but this can be a good thing to actually enjoy its exclusives with much more experience you have today. As for the Power Base Converter, another aspect that made it great is the controller, being able to play Master System games with the much better gamepad is yet another advantage. It's crazy how the 8-bit Sonic titles differ quite a lot from their 16-bit counterparts, and the Game Gear received an exclusive Sonic and two Tails games too. Sonic 2 (8-bit) is a personal favorite since I played it on the Game Gear and on the SMS (much better version due to the larger screen) later.

@@roberto1519 That's a great point. Back then I probably would have been disappointed by the graphics wanting them to be as good as the Genesis. it had parallax, but just games poor in dimention and elements can use it, for the low memory in the cartridge.

@RetroComparisons
3 ай бұрын
Great catch on this, it's a mistake I didn't realize I even made until you pointed it out. So for the life of me I couldn't find a rom of Phantasy Star Fukkokuban but it's just a SMS game on a Mega Drive cartridge using the MD's backwards compatibility. Therefore I just got footage twice on the SMS to represent it in this video but I apparently messed up and put in the wrong footage.

This is a pretty big comparison; good work, Bill. I think this one, like something like NES vs SNES (or NES vs TG16/PC-Engine), are some of the more interesting comparisions, since these are what we wanted to know back then in the 80s and 90s: is the upgrade worth it? Nearly invariably, I think that was the case though there's maybe a few outliers: I prefer SMS PGA Tour over the Genesis game, the flying disc/frisbee event was just straight cut out of the Genesis version of California Games which automatically makes it inferior IMO, plus I just love the FM unit soundtrack for Double Dragon on the SMS compared to the lackluster music conversion on the Genesis though I do prefer the Genesis port overall vs the SMS DD. Oh, and I really appreciate the very strangely creepy soundtrack from Jeroen Tel in the 8-bit versions of Bram Stoker's Dracula...his work was always interesting and/or great. The Genesis wins the vast majority of the comparisons that I've played on both, but I think the SMS does okay to good in many, but I know MK3 is definitely one of the biggest losers. I'll have to check out more of the video later on though.

Thanks so much as always my friend for watching! Personally speaking this is also what I'm most interested in since these are consoles out at the time I was getting into gaming. You listed some great examples of games where the SMS is actually better than the Genesis. I was working on another video last night which also had Bram Stoker's Dracula and it got me thinking, is there another example where the 8 bit version is better than the 16 bit version and the 16 bit version is better than the "upgraded" console after it? The SMS/NES game is a lot of fun whereas I think the Genesis/SNES version is pretty crappy and then the Sega CD version is one of the worst games I've ever played. But as far as this video goes, I mainly I made this it just so I could present Klax to the world again.

It is 2024 and it is time for Klax.. Very interesting to hear thoughts on the Master System's soundtrack of Dracula and liking it better than the Genesis/MD version. The Genesis Dracula has an outstanding soundtrack, IMO one of the best on the system. So I'll have to checkout the SMS version.
