Miyazaki expressed how much he loved the area and since he couldn't find a way to organically fit it in the world, he "cheated" and came up with the painting concept. I think at some point it was meant to connect to the Undead Asylum.

Leyndell is definitely my favourite area in the series You already mentioned most of the reasons why, but a HUGE part of my love for Leyndell is the Erdtree From the very beginning, Elden Ring’s world seems centred around this impossibly massive, breathtakingly beautiful force of nature. As you progressed through the game, it got closer and closer, until eventually, you were underneath its leaves. Entering the city surrounding the Erdtree was HYPE AS FUCK. You look at the sky, and see branches enveloping you from all angles, and as you get closer and closer to the centre, you get more and more tantalisingly close to touching the base itself. That final run up to the Morgott boss fight where at last, you’re approaching the landmark you’ve been pining for over all these dozens of hours, is one of my favourite moments in gaming

Putting Undead Burg/Parish over Anor Londo literally made my day. Don't get me wrong, I love Anor Londo as much as the next guy (O&S is one of my fav bosses in the series), but Undead Burg/Parish is seriously one of the coolest areas in the franchise, albeit not visually.

Yeah, when I first played ds1 after becoming a fanboy with ds3, getting to spend 5 minutes in Undead Burg was an absolute revelation. I don't really know how to put it, other than to say that ds1 has the kind of level design that expands your brain... It makes you feel lost, but in the best possible way, the area feels massive, ad yet you understand how small it really is. And also I will venture to say that New Londo is to this day the only area in any fromsoft game that actually scared me. Ds1's obscurity with its mechanics, layout, and everything all clicks together here, when got to it from Valley of the Drakes I was _massively_ underlevelled too. The ghost enemies reveal was as haunting as the lore implications. It's kinda weird to say, but with how much more accessible (and lighter on bs) the later fromsoft titles are, you couldn't really make any area as frightening as this. In ds1 and 2, when you are starting out, it really feels like _everything_ is hostile, even the game itself
@leithaziz2716
Жыл бұрын
@@luigivercotti6410 You are likely reffering to 2 elements. - Interconectivity: how each area eventually loops back to itself with shortcuts and even leads to different areas without need of backtracking. Later Souls games became more linear and this is something DS1 excells at in comparisons to future entries. It might also contribute to why you can feel lost at times, because it can be unclear wether the area you're in is making progress towards your journey. - Lack of warping untill midgame: when you enter a dangerous area, you have to treck through it or make it all the way back to a safe place. I really felt the pressure of going through the Catacombs and entering Tomb of Giants so early. Finding your way back to Firelink gave me a feeling of relaxation and peace that wouldn't be possible if I could warp back to safety. I'm not saying that warping is bad conceptually as it can save on mindless backtracking, but it comes with its drawbacks. I actually liked how late in the game you unlocked it in comparison to DS2/3 and ER where you unlock it from the get go, as it hampers the feeling of exploration.

@@leithaziz2716 While I agree that the interconnectivity between the different areas is the best in DS1, I can't agree that it's better within individual areas in comparison to the later games, especially BB, DS3, and ER (the legacy dungeons). Hard agree on the top 3, specially Leyndell, such an excellent area. Come to think of it, Leyndell, Farum Azula and Stormveil are among the best of Fromsoft level design, not to mention how Farum Azula and the final bosses really elevates the endgame of ER. Fishing Hamlet, outside of the duo Shark bullcrap, is pretty underrated imo. The level is pretty good and the encounters are mostly well done, but of course the atmosphere is the best part of it. The verticality in its design, thematics, colour palette, enemy variety, interconnectivity both within the city and to the sewers, size, context in the story, and not to mention MORGOTT is nothing short of genius. Everyone involved in programming that area deserves a medal.

YEEEEEES. I COMPLETELY agree with Shulva being the best area in DS2. I genuinely don't understand why Eleum Loyce is almost everyone's favorite (notable exception: you lol). I do like it quite a bit, but honestly I believe its the favorite for many due to "oooh snow levels = sex", but objectively it's way inferior to Shulva. The atmosphere is fucking amazin, especially inside the pyramid with Elana's singing. Aesthetically I agree, it's the most beautiful area in the game, and the level design is god tier. It almost feels like a Zelda dungeon, which is a huge win for me. Plus Sinh was my favorite boss in the game as well
@playmsbk

Eleum loyce is a mastercrafted level. It allows for immense player freedom since you can theoretically beat it without doing 95% of it and pretty much choose how much shit you want to deal with. It also provides incentives for backtracking and thorough exploration with its shifting layout, its immense size lends itself very well to ds2's exclusive mechanics like life gems and low item durability in a way no other ds2 level does and it is arguably the most visually detailed and beautiful level in the game. Shulva is great too with a very unique aesthetic and very good exploration mechanics but what really brings it down for me are the goofy and frustrating dragon butts, the fact that they couldn't resist spamming the invulnerable sanctum knights ruining what was a unique and interesting new mechanic and the blandness of the interior of the dragon sanctum, probably the blandest looking area in all of ds2, and that's saying something.

I’ve always found it so weird how people say Sekiro has less level design and exploration. I’m a huge fan of area design, moreso than most From fans who I feel like gravitate towards bosses. But Sekiro was great for me. Fountainhead was incredible, and Ashina Castle feels like a huge sandbox where you can just explore. I found Old Grave late into my playthrough and was blown away at how much of Sekiro I haven’t explored. The way it connects to Sunken Valley, Senpou Temple, and Mibu Village is so cool. I feel like KZitemrs don’t usually give it enough credit. Sure, it has fewer areas, but each area is a massive world to explore with plenty of secrets and branching paths. That’s why I loved seeing three Sekiro areas in the top 10. I’d still say Bloodborne and probably Elden Ring have better areas overall, but Sekiro is right there.

I pretty much agree with your top 6 areas, just in a different order. I think Fountainhead Palace is my favorite, it is the most fun gameplay-wise to fight my way through (like you said to get through the hordes of okami you really have to use your ninjutsu and prosthetics as well as skills like anti-air deathblow and lightning redirect). The one building you have to stealth through to kill all the nobles while fighting the okami is so well designed. I love how the lake opens up to the carp section as well as climbing the mountain while the lightning comes down at the end. Finally, the atmosphere is probably my favorite in the series with the sakura trees, waterfall, deep lake and the dancing enemies (this all contrasts with the creepy life-stealing nobles which culminates in the building with them devouring each other). It starts with a great boss fight and ends with a great boss fight as well. 2nd is Central Yharnam, the level design is immaculate, the enemies are all well designed with great variety. Probably my favorite starting area in any game. 3rd is Leyndell, just entering this area and staring up at the Erd Tree while the music kicks in was one of my favorite moments in any game, enemy design is S-tier, so many paths with stuff to discover (like the shunning grounds or the old round table hold). 4th is Ashina Castle, 5th and 6th would be Stormveil and Fishing Hamlet. So yeah, I agree with Magicat on the best areas, although I would put Senpou Temple in the top 10.

Once you go from DS1 to 3 for example you'll notice the QoL improvements which'll give you a bigger appreciation for the game. You can play the trilogy in order, but if you're unsure about 2 then you can skip straight to 3 after 1. DS2 is not a bad game but it is the weakest Souls game in certain aspects.

@@DIMOHA25 Personally I love Brume Tower. Absolutely massive and I love the emphasis on going down the tower. I don’t count Frigid Outskirts as a part of Eleum Loyce. And Burnt Ivory King and Ava were very solid fights imo, especially the former who was basically the OG Radahn.
@DIMOHA25

@@zaynthemane yeah, I don't like Ivory King. The first phase mosh pit gets boring real fast. Also felt like Brume Tower should've opened up all the branching paths a lot earlier. It's almost completely linear, only teasing you with all the possibilities, for the first 60% of the dlc or something. Boss runbacks suck too. Could've been great, ended up alright.

I honestly don't get the hype for The Ringed City. Yes, it looks nice, but it's just Elphael before Elphael was a thing. Same colour palette, same annoying gank fights, mandatory lame swamp area in the middle of the map, linear progression, etc.. The only thing that stands out in my opinion is the bosses.

Random Joseph Mengele reference appeared. But I applaud you, cause that shows you know your history, and I appreciate that. And I agree, Mengele would feel right at home in the research hall, the sick bastard. He'd made Byrgenwyrth a hundred times worse. I can also see him happily experiment away on Kos/ her orphan.

Just started playing Elden ring after having only played Dark souls 3, I really disliked it at first with Limgrave, but after making it to stormveil, it really clicked for me, the area is so cool and there's so much to explore, hopping between towers and rooftops was simply epic and made me appreciate how open and non-linier it is, it's like if Lothric castle was fully explorable. Plus I think making your way around the side of the castle and up so you can then descend back down into the interior is so cool and makes the castle truly seem well defended. My only note is that I wish you could scale the towers outside the entrance, looking back over limgrave from, there would be awesome.
