Oh my lord. It has been so long since I heard this song. But that oppening riff just awoke some memories. This song is on the Juno soundtrack, which my family would listen to on road trips when I was small, I've heard it hundreds of times. Thanks James :)

Cheers mate! RIP Overend Watts. The rare man who walks away from "the life" after seeing the truth about the "big time." His book "The Man Who Hated Walking" was hilarious. For the 2009 reunion, he swapped his famous platforms for a pair of white brogans, monogrammed O and W on either foot. Asked about it, he replied, "Yes. Old Wanker." One of rock's all-time great oddballs.

Well done and thanks, I'm adding this after seeing YT of Robyn Hitchcock cover it in a tiny packed pub with an army of semi-in tune band mates just having one helluva time. I wish I could understand one half of his outro rant where he mimics Ian and uses it to basically introduce his whole band. Fun stuff.

Yep, Bowie wrote this as part of the Ziggy Stardust song cycle - the "news" that the dudes were to carry was the news conveyed in "Five Years", that the Earth had only five years left to live. Of course, like so many other bowie songs, it works better without the specific context.

My D string keeps breaking in the same spot right up by the tuner peg when I tune to open E. I understand that tuning up puts more strain on them but it has happened 3 times this week, seems a bit abnormal to me. Any reason???

Try running a piece of thread through the string slot and see if the thread gets stuck. If it does, you might have a burr in the slot.

Does anyone know the history of this guitar arrangement? Did Mick Ronson work it out with Bowie and *then* hand the whole thing over to Mick Ralphs and Mott? It really does not sound like Mr. Ralphs' original work.
