I've always loved the dynamic interplay between Nina and Al on this one. Beautiful.

Like a Bach chorale - multiple parts shared between the keyboard and guitar, a baroque combination, and the melody soaring over the top - truly stunning musicianship!

Exactly! And almost verbatim of what I put on my facebook page as a comment when I posted this amazing video! :) Do you know if there are more videos from this concert or collaboration, in this Bach style? Her collaboration with Al Shackman in this early 60 videos, in this Bach style, is amazing, and I want to find more of it. I only found one more that I like as much - love me or leave me, from the Ed Sullivan show - but there are most likely more out there. I found a few more places where they collaborate, but that is the only other piece I have found where they go into this Bach-esque type of duet improvisation

as a singer, I automatically fall into breathing with her . . . and she literally leaves me breathless. I'm not talking about running out of air. I mean, as she moves from note to note, from phrase to phares, I stop breathing. This woman is one of the greatest singers and musicians of modern times. What a privilege, what a gift that we have these moments with her.

For all we know We may never meet again Before we go Make this moment live again We won't say goodbye Until the last minute I'll hold out my hand And my heart will be in it For all we know This might only be a dream We come and we go Like the ripples, like the ripples in the stream So baby, love me, love me tonight Tomorrow was made for some Oh, but tomorrow But tomorrow may never, never come For all we know Yes, tomorrow may never, never come For all we know

Musically, the chemistry between Al and Nina was too majestic and genuine for words. The way they interweave with one another possesses an almost transcendental beauty. Another prime example of this is on Nina's unconventional take on the Cole Porter classic "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" at Newport in 1960. One can even go as far as saying Nina's music was never better without Al.

This is going to sound like soppy guff, but it's brilliant to hear the brilliancy of nina simone, and seeing black and white musicians working in harmony, this is why there can really be no place at all for racism anywhere, music unites us all. Al Shackman is fantastic on the guitar, and the combination of all the pieces can really be heard from 1.00 onwards

Nina was pure genius! Racism/White supremacy changed her. I always wonder what we, black people, would have been like if we didn't live in a system of racism/white supremacy. Nina could have gone to the school she wanted and played the type of music she loved. RIP sister.

But would we be talking about her now if she was accepted by the Curtis Institute? We will never know for sure if racism was the reason why she didn't get in - the classical world is extra competitive. But believing that put a fire in Nina that lifted her to a place among the greatest of artists.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that racism played a strong role in her not getting into the Curtis Institute. Also she was a woman. Sexism likely also played some role too. The Curtis Institute even retroactively gave her a certificate or something like that, so I think that says something. I'd say she already had some fire in her to be black in the classical world and be applying for the Curtis Institute, but that experience prolly put more fire in her.

Racism deprived the concert hall of a great artist. Imagine what she would have done with the Goldberg Variations or the Well-Tempered Clavier.
@lysanamcmillan7972

The one problem is they would not have been hers. The Curtis Institute's refusal was short-sighted, cruel, and hateful two ways. But it freed her from the classical playlist. She could write and speak for herself. Mourning that she was unable to play material that's already been performed for over 400 years doesn't show any real respect for what Simone accomplished. Racism can also treat her blockage from white musical mastery as the tragedy instead of recognizing it as her inspiration to do far more.
