Nice review Gowan, I fully agree with your points, except the part about going all in on the clean vocals. Like the sax on Rivers, it's a nice exotic spice to change the flavour, but too much would ruin the dish. It's gotta be tastefully sprinkled in. My view on tech death is, since Archspire released Relentless Mutation, every other tech death band in the world has to either vary their sound, or stay purely tech and be found wanting. Good call, Allegaeon.

I have haven't listened to the album enough to really give my feeling on it but 4 stars feels right. I did just want to comment though that clean vocals should be used sparingly for a band like this, if there were too many it would really put me off. I'm glad they aren't going full Trivium here!

Necrophagist is the best intro for tech death
@Metalton95
5 жыл бұрын
Intro?? I'd say Cosmogenesis by Obscura or The Aura by Beyond Creation, as they are less extreme and more accessible. Necro's song structures and riffs in multiple time signatures are not easy to get into for newcomers, despite the super melodic solos. And all the breaks and stops in the music on Onset of Putrefaction doesn't help either (unless we're introducing a Suffocation fan to tech death).

The Secular Age was actually one of my favorites from my first listen through. Still is after a few more listens. More cleans would be nice but how they used them on this record is on point nonetheless. Their previous album got my attention due to the closing track featuring Björn Stridt from Soilwork! Boy, tech death has blown the eff up in the past few years, hasn't it? Rivers of Nihil, Revocation, Horrendous, these guys, Psycroptic, Beyond Creation, Archspire, Obscura, Cognitive (though one could argue they're more technical deathcore than pure tech death), all just got freaking huge all of a sudden. And that's not a bad thing, because they all do something a little different. Cognitive has more breakdowns. Rivers of Nihil have the sax thing. These guys are big on anthemic melodies. Obscura and Beyond Creation are flying the flag of traditional tech death. Horrendous have this total package Lovecraftian sci-fi horror thing going on. And some riffs that sound like they could have come from Still Life era Opeth. Revocation are a bit thrashier.
