The first ever television documentary about the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula). This half-hour special debuted nationally on PBS stations as part of the "Exotic and Unusual Fishes" series in 1992 thru 1996. During the 1992 July sweeps, it was the highest-rated program of the evening for several PBS affiliates. In January 1995, it was again the highest-rated program of the evening.
The documentary focuses on the history, biology, and life cycle of this amazing creature. Many researchers see gars as a link between the scientific research of today and what has evolved from a primitive past. Gars can breathe both air and water, which is one of the reasons they are still around today. Unfortunately, we cannot be as optimistic about their future.
