"If we can think whatever we want, why not think nice things" is gonna become my motto from now on! Idk why, but that just clicked for me and gave me a sense of autonomy and agency that I've never felt I've had over my mental health

The "men watching football while the women clean up" comment is so true to the majority of marriages I saw growing up in my culture (though it was more "men drinking and yelling about politics while the women clean up and keep the men's wine glasses full" for me). That's why before I got married this year, I made sure to chat with my husband and make very clear that I expect an equal distribution of chores, and if I ever start to feel like I'm taking on too much, I'm going to call that out. Luckily, I also chose a partner who wouldn't put that on me, but laying those boundaries out early on did a lot for my peace of mind

I think that's what needs to happen is a clear set of boundaries very early on then the bad eggs won't stick around 😅

Allison, Alayna, THANK YOU SO MUCH. This was so helpful for me. I'm 25, I have OCD, and I just started my first romantic relationship with a VERY good friend. I'm incredibly nervous about it, and my head has been going into constant thought spirals. What Allison said about focusing on what you want right now, and not thinking far into the future, was so helpful to me. It brought me right back down to earth. Everything said in this podcast was so helpful to me, hearing about relationships in a very practical non rose coloured glasses way, is exactly what I needed right now. Alayna, Sleeping Around is an amazing podcast and I can't wait for more!

both my and my partner's love languages are acts of service. if we are hosting our friends to watch a show/game that the other isn't super interested in, i am happy to be the one keeping the house tidy or snacks flowing while they are having time with their friends, just as they are happy to do the same when i have friends over. it's definitely all about communicating boundaries, expectations, and comfort levels with chores etc!

46:08 i was really worried about coming into my current relationship with no prior experience, until a friend pointed out it meant I had no bad (relationship) habits. There's plusses and minuses to every situation, what matters is showing up ready to listen and do the work to build the relationship

Another avenue for those with OCD/rOCD is I-CBT! It gets to the route of the doubt that fuels the OCD rather than going through exposure therapy, which can be hard in regards to a relationship (fear of marriage, commitment, etc.)

Adding to the last nugget: when you anticipate that something is going to or has just gone to shit I have this mantra "här är vi nu" which translates to -ish "right now we're here" which brings me into the moment to see what I have to work with Right Now and what worries I can "save" for later. The saved worries usually are forgotten because the problem has already been solved!🎉

Focusing only on the harm that you believe is caused by the institution of marriage is very short-sited. Biggest caveat - if you are planning to be childless for the remainder of your life then no formal institution is ever needed. There is simply no legal reason to formally marry. There are financial pros and cons to be sure, so look into those. However, While marriage can offer stability and benefits, it's important to recognize that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. The decision to marry should be based on individual circumstances and goals. For those planning to have children, creating a stable and loving environment is crucial. However, this can be achieved through various means, including marriage, co-parenting, or strong family support networks. It's essential to prioritize healthy relationships and the well-being of children, regardless of marital status. broken homes in all cultures for a good deal of the problems our children face today.

I just realized I interpret what Alayna saying totally different when she talkes to a hetrosexual with a hyper female woise then when she talkes to Achley and Mak her fellow lesbians. Doing everything in Chosen Family means like steal a 🚤 and cross the ocean to get to the love off your life, when I here it in Sleeping around in a marriage mostly hetrosexual episode I interpret it as stay even if your spouse beats you up and other from off fysical, emotional and sexual violence. Will talk with my therapist about this. /swedish 🐝 🚺

“there are some people that really flourish with traditional gender roles” 🙄 i can’t even entertain this line of thought that gender roles aren’t essentially oppressive to women and some women it “just works” to “lean in” to traditional femininity. traditional gender roles are inherently disempowering to women. it’s not just about who does more cooking and cleaning… it’s a mathematical issue of, when women take on the bulk of unpaid household labor in a family unit and men are the breadwinners, that women is economically disempowered and has less freedom to leave the marriage if it stops “working” for her. there’s a REASON why the modern concept of marriage for love is so recent, really taking off during the sixties, and that’s because that narrative and cultural conditioning was a BACKLASH to the feminist movement and growing female class consciousness and questioning of why women should participate in an institution that doesn’t benefit them. when domestic violence is still as ubiquitous as it, and studies show misogyny is in fact increasing with each younger generation compared to our parents’ generations, a relationship expert should not be endorsing traditional marriages with this liberal mindset of “to each their own!” but i understand how engaging with some actual analysis about how women as a CLASS are impacted by marriage will not do so well with female audiences who want to be married nonetheless and treat their marriages as individual contracts they just need to be equipped to negotiate to “work for them,” that won’t possibly fail if they’re just smart and self-aware and well-versed in therapy speak enough.
