This cruise had a number of exciting firsts for me. Ever since the Oasis class launched I've wanted to go on one of these ships. That was 2009 and I'd never even been on any cruise ship at that point. Well I've been on many cruises since but this is my first ever Oasis class ship and my first ever time on Royal Caribbean.
I did worry that Allure of the Seas wouldn't be my cup of tea. I've sailed on many cruises but always on traditional mid sized ships. Allure is completely different from a typical mid size ship in so many ways, but it was great! There's so much to see and do on board and amazingly it never feels crowded even though there's another 6000 or so passengers with you. I'd heard many other people say this and I doubt if it could really be true. But it is. Thanks to its size and the way it's been designed, people end up spread out over the different neighborhoods on board. Even the buffet, which isn't especially large, never felt crowded. Because it's such a huge ship they can afford to put on spectacular shows. There are 28 cast members on stage during Blue Planet! That show was amazing and you must see it of you sail on this ship. The aqua show was also incredible. I saw it twice on board and I would happily see it a few more times!
After boarding one of the places we headed to first was Central Park. This was what so intrigued me about the Oasis class. Inside balcony rooms overlooking a park with real plants and trees! It didn't disappoint. I thought it might be less good in reality than in pictures but it is bigger and more beautiful than I expected. It's gorgeous and I see why people love it. There are restaurants, a cafe and a bar as well as live music in the evenings.
We were very happy with our balcony room. It's a good size, with a relatively large balcony and a very nice bathroom with proper shower doors. No nasty shower curtain! This ship launched in 2010 but it has been very well maintained and it absolutely does not look like a ship that's over 13 years old. Allure does lack slides but is otherwise the same as any other Oasis class ship.
Being our first cruise on Royal Caribbean we were worried about there being hoardes of marauding children on board but it was never an issue. There were more children than I'd ever seen on a cruise before but we were sailing during school time and the lack of the slides may mean this is a ship more popular with adults. There is still plenty for both kids and adults to do though.
It also busted a misconception I had had about cruising on Royal. I thought Royal was a down market line for families only, equal perhaps with Carnival. Not at all! I've sailed with Celebrity many times and it compared well. Of course Celebrity is more premium than Royal but this experience was very good. The cabin and bathroom was more premium than a recent experience on Princess. I sailed on their most recent ship, Discovery Princess, earlier this year. The allure has more premium cabins and bathrooms than that ship., despite being 12 years older!
It also had better food in the main dining room than Princess. However the buffet food didn't match up to Princess or Celebrity. It was good, but it wasn't amazing, and the selection seemed relatively small..I think that's partly just because of how the ship is designed. Pizza is offered for free at Sorrento's, so isn't offered in the buffet. There's also a couple of inclusive cafe venues in central Park and on the Royal promenade. I will say though that we enjoyed all the food we ate in the buffet and I don't feel like we missed out. I do wish like their sister line Celebrity they marked allergens on each item in the buffet. It's a pain having to ask someone for this information when it could just be written down. BTW Sorrento's has gluten free pizza on request and it is so good!! Seriously one of the best GF pizzas I've ever eaten. Just ask for it and it will be ready in five to ten minutes. They even cook it in a dedicated oven.
The highlight of the ship, and that's even beyond the comfortable cabin and the amazing entertainment was the crew. The staff on board Allure are for the most part very friendly and deliver outstanding service. It makes so much difference to the enjoyment of your vacation when you get greeted by name and with a friendly smile. I don't know if this is typical or not with Royal but I really hope so. We've already booked our next cruise with Royal!
