Last week, at 6.30am one morning, a member of the public arrived at the centre carrying a cardboard box. This isn't unusual, however, when the contents of that box is an adult female badger, it immediately sets off alarm bells.
Found collapsed in the rescuer’s garden, the sow was in such a poor state, she was barely responsive😔.
Just two days after going through chemo, Simon was at the door, admitting the badger, and starting the long process of warming her hypothermic body.
Weighing just 3.5kg, a third of what she should be, we knew this was going to be an uphill battle.
With blood tests carried out, the battle got a lot harder, when we learnt the results showed a suspected ingestion of rat poison.
Rat and other “pest” pellets are extremely in-discriminate, they don't just affect the targeted species, they affect the other species living in that area, and the species that prey on the target species.
Sadly, despite both Simon and vet Marco's efforts, the sow's body was just not in any condition to fight, and we lost the battle to give her the second chance she was owed.
