my grandma went to a zoo in Paris and she wanted to give some peanuts to the elephant so she asked an employe "Puis-je mange l'elephant" (Can i eat the elephant) instead of "Puis-je donne le mange" and that zookeeper was horrified

As A French national living in Canterbury, in the UK, I had once a question from a British on board on a ferry: `what do you call home?`. I have not been able to answer as there are two ways of seeing things in my opinion. Home could be your country of birth, or the country you live in and work at in the sense you`re making a life there. It`s a kind of duality in which you have constant reminders of where you`re coming from and how you lead your life. I would say that I see things in two different ways and I have two different perception on how to handle some events--sometimes they are in stark contrast, some they can be combined quite well. I assume that any expat who lived for a lengthy period of time abroad have felt these type of ID issues. In other ways, our world has become multipolar.

Ultimately, I think home is a feeling of the heart. Close your eyes when asking yourself "What is home?" and I do believe the first thing that comes to mind would be home. Personally, I get images of my childhood home, which my parents have long since sold, but that city and that neighbourhood are elicits an emotional response when trying to picture "home".

Exactly. I was born and raised in France, until I was 24, French citizen. From a Moroccan background. And I have now been living in Canadan for 9 years, and I am a Canadian citizen too. I am almost having a panic attack when I am asked where I am from. Here and there man, I don't know 🙃

After 16 years in the UK, I still can't call it home. For me, it is where I work. Home is still my home country, France and Greece where my partner is from. Even though I spend far more time in the UK, I feel "at home" when in Greece.

Nice one Paul. You and Eddie Izzard have got it. There can be minor cultural differences but otherwise humour is transnational and deeply connective. One race with many faces. Vive la difference et vive l'égalitè.

I was born in Paris, back end of 62,both me folks were French but my father didn't hang around it was just me and my mam.In 1966 she met an english fella who was working in Paris and fell in love.In 1967 he brought me and my mam back to the UK to live as a family,we settled in South Yorkshire. As I didn't speak any english had to learn it quick so I could go to school which I did in six months but with a yorkshire accent and as my french was still developing, remember I was only 5,i was also starting to speak it with a yorkshire accent which I continue to do even now without even thinking about it and have incorporated yorkshire sayings, expressions etc into my french for example I was in France last summer visiting a cousin and remember saying to him at Le Gare du Nord before boarding the Eurostar, Tarra (yorkshire for goodbye) à bientôt

"Rebecoming British" would have made for a great title. We should make "rebecome" a verb in English. Why not? It's understandable as an alternative to "becoming again." It makes sense, even if it is a neologism.

And as a for the brexit thing...wanting to leave the EU doesn't equate with hating Europe. I'm English, speak 3 languages, and havent lived in England for 25 years. I love Europe. I wasn't able to vote (I've been too long outside the UK) but maybe I'd have voted leave despite loving Europe. Love Europe, disillusioned with the EU...
