I finally get this scene! I think most people don't know what's going on here, but I think I have it figured out. As you can tell as Penny listens to the stewardess perform her usual routine that she has memorized and recites often, something occurs to her. What she's remembering in that moment of facial expression change at 0:42 is that what the stewardess is now reciting is exactly what William was reciting to her to try to keep her awake when she took drugs earlier and had to get her stomach pumped. Thus she recalls when William was reciting the stewardess sermon to her when he was keeping her awake, which presumably led her to remember the rest of the encounter, in which he said "I love you", hence the facial expression change and sudden need to get closure. A beautiful, really really subtle scene that took me a second rewatch to fully get.

When did he recite the stewardess’s sermon? Is it a deleted scene? Because he definitely never said that little shindig in the overdose scene.

This is the original script of the scene for anyone that wants to see the original: 144 INT. AIRPLANE - DAY 144 Penny Lane settles into her seat on the airplane. She notices William watching from the terminal window, and waves. STEWARDESS Please extinguish all flammable items, and return all seats and tray tables to their full and upright locked positions. She mouths along with the words. There is no one to share the joke with. And then a few blurry memories come back to her. She gestures to him... understanding him more fully... as he disappears. 145 INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL - DAY 145 William walks alongside her plane, moving from terminal window to terminal window. Catching her glance again, he's picking up steam. What's she saying? 146 INT. PLANE - DAY 146 She keeps watching as he runs alongside, still keeping up with her plane. She now fully remembers, and places her outstretched fingers on the window. She mouths the words: I'll see you back home! ON WINDOW He us running through her fingers. CLOSE ON WILLIAM Who can run no further.

no problem, after posting that I read the scene where William and Penny (overdosing) are at the hotel room alone. It actually connects to what the stewardess is saying in this scene! William holds Penny Lane, and keeps her moving. It's a sagging, messy slow dance. WILLIAM "In the unlikely event of a water landing... " PENNY "... you will be required to wear a safety vest." WILLIAM Keep going. PENNY "Please place all stowable luggage in the overhead compartments... out in the seat in front of you." WILLIAM (prompting) "Seat and tray tables." PENNY "And seat-backs and tray-tables should be in their full and upright and locked positions... " 138 INT. HOTEL - NIGHT 138 They move slowly, she's fading. WILLIAM "In the tragic event of a water landing..." A140 INT. HOTEL ROOM -- NIGHT A140 William holds Penny. She is very woozy. PENNY "... you will be required to..." (gives up) I'm tired. She is very groggy, as he holds her. WILLIAM Well. Now that I have your attention. And you may not remember this later, I just want to make it clear that... Hey! (she blinks, barely awake again) I know you've heard this before. And I have never said this to anybody, not really - well, nobody who didn't legally have to say it back to me, but - (tries to be casual) I love you. And I have a hard time sharing you with all of rock and roll because I - why am I nervous? - You'll never remember this - HEY! - (she blinks) I love you, and I'm about to boldly go where... Many men have gone before... He kisses her. A doctor and nurse come crashing into the room. They push past William and pull Penny into the bathroom. He sits on the edge of the bed, looking into the bathroom, as they work on her. We hear Stevie Wonder. "My Cherie Amor." you can look thje script here www.imsdb.com/scripts/Almost-Famous.html

I know most people say the best moment of this movie is the Tiny Dancer scene but for me this takes the cake. I don't know why but the melancholic beauty of the scene really hits me hard. Even the most beautiful of things come to an end. Smile rather than cry because at least you could feel it's bittersweetness for a moment than not feel it at all.

It's the most moving scene. My personal favourites are of his sister leaving home, him being reconciled accidentally with his sister at the airport when all was lost and his mother announcing to the lecture theatre that rock stars had kidnapped his son.

I agree. Anyone who has been though that situation knows how cold and empty it feels that moment you realize they're really gone. I love scenes like this, especially in Cameron Crowe films, that take a quiet and technically benign scene and inject it with an intensely relentless level of emotion. Cameron's films in the late 80s through the early '00s also had the benefit of his then-wife Nancy Wilson scoring them. She was able to capture the emotions he wanted to convey perfectly. It was such a bummer when they broke up.

Everyone has their own favorite scene in this movie. For me it was when his sister left home to become a stewardess and told him to look under the bed, it would set him free. I had an older sister leave home for good when she was 16, so I really related to that scene. Almost Famous has more relateable scenes than most movies ever made.

She doesn't have "feelings" for William in that she has no romantic feelings for him. She sees him as a very special friend who saved her life. Unlike men, it's very hard for a girl to develop romantic feelings for someone you just see as a "friend" unfortunately. But women value deep cross gender freindships more than men do. As this movie shows, in the end, she doesn't mind potentially surprising and humiliating her ex lover so that her special friend gets his due.

Summer Tummer meh, men escape the “friend zone” all the time; just ask my wife 😉. Her look of newfound surprise, almost a crushing realization says it all, she has romantic love for him. She would respond that way if she suddenly realized “he’s a really good friend”.. she already knew that, or at least wouldn’t be “crushed” by that epiphany.

Same here, but I guess they both realised they had ended up maturing into different people than what they had fallen in love with. It's quite possible that they both ended up being the most impactful people in each other's lives, even though they had to let each other go their separate ways (hence why William never called).

I think penny and lady were 2 different personalities in one, penny was a show or an act put on because she though now could anybody ever love plain old lady. I think her mimicking the stewards, she realises that the show is over and that there is no one there to perform for and that William was there to see off lady, and that he loved ‘lady’ and not penny lane. She is realising that it is ok for here to be herself, and that she is parting ways with the one true person that knows her true self.

She’s remembering Williams saying he loved her, but I don’t think she had an epiphany about loving him back, at least not in any sort of romantic way. I think it’s more like here was this thing (love) that she wanted so badly from someone (Russell) only to get it from someone she’d never even taken all that seriously, and yet he was the one who was there when she’d needed someone. This silly kid who was too sweet for “Rock n roll” had saved her life, and didn’t want or expect anything from her. He was just a good guy

The very beginning of this clip -- the "Hey Lady!" moment -- isn't in the theatrical release. I hadn't seen it before I saw it on here. And now I'm wondering about the fact that she doesn't react when William yells that. Does it mean that she never did really tell him what her name was? That "Lady Goodman" was a fib?
@trevornewman6646

My thoughts exactly. Listening to the commentary, Cameron Crowe makes no mention of it intending to be a lie. Also, having her lie would be inconsistent with what we see in the scenes before and after. I do have to wonder if the scene got trimmed for the theatrical release in part so that people wouldn't interpret her secret as a lie. Wish I knew Crowe because I'd ask him about it.
