Had an interesting conversation with an old guy, maybe a MAGA guy.
I meet people just about everyday. I'll have conversations with just about anyone. If they can hold a conversation, I'm going to ask questions. I'm curious about this world and I'm more curiouser about what makes us tick as a group and individually. My front garden was getting obscene with growth. The nice rains we had plus the fertilizer and soil I potted them in has been very important as well. But it was time. I started to move the pots, some 1 gallon, some 25 gallons. Hurt by back a couple of time quite seriously in the last two years so I was to be very careful on my limit and not to test it. Pulling weeds that have grown in the pots and many of the branches from the succulents have overgrown and would break off when I moved the pot, thereby having me collect the branches and re-pot them. Which would take up a day or two. I just can't throw them out. I've given them life and will continue to do so. I've got plants crawling out of my ears. The weather's been glorious.
Took a few photos of the plants, posted them online to sell for my Plant Sale on Saturday. Parked the truck around the block to open space in the 4 car driveway that will get filled up with my plants. I did make a print out sign and tacked it on a board and wrapped around a cinder block. It's a poster stand I put out on the street in my parking spot for the busy traffic that comes through. I used to have a stand but somebody apparently hit and ran me in the middle of the night and smashed in my tail light but the wooden sign board probably protected my car. I don't know. Why am I even telling you.
There was a couple that came by. A Mexican American older couple. Very nice. His mom used to have a succulent busy she ran out of her house when he was a kid. Probably in his 70s now. Gave him and his wife a tour of the back yard as well. They just bought some branches of succulents and went on their merry way.
An older guy came by and parked his electrical bike on my driveway. Nice guy. Chuck. We talked about plants, gardening and art. He showed me some photos of his artwork: stained glass, Adirondack chairs, a cool wooden boat and a wooden bicycle. We talked about art in schools. Gave him a tour of the back yard garden.
We chatted more. I don't know why he brought it up, but he referenced Donald Trump as "T". Asked me what I thought about "T". I was about respond and he then said "your answer can determine whether or not there'll be another conversation" meaning if I didn't have the response he wanted, we couldn't be friends. I don't do politics. I can discuss it and be very aware of the testy current political dynamics in the US today. I'm a peace maker and a good neighbor. I don't care what people's politics are just don't harm anyone and be an asshole. Pretty much it. But, I was compelled to speak. With wisdom and discernment. That people in public office need to be of public service and provide good governance. If they are not in office to provide public service, then I'm going to be concerned as to their motives in public office. Across the board, you want level headed leaders who will look for ways to move the country forward on a grand international and domestic scale and on a local scale. Then implement plans of actions that would provide the highest good for the highest amount of people. Especially for those that are marginalized. That's what civic duty is. People not willing to understand those principles shouldn't hold office. I may have or not have won him over, but I don't know. You never know what's really going on inside of people but you always want to be a good neighbor. Being a good neighbor at least gives you a decent reputation that you're probably a good person wants to share some of his garden. I offered to give him some Milkweed seeds and a branch from the Angel Trump shrub. Not this time, but offered him to come by anytime. Even for coffee. He'll be turning 81 years old in a few months.
