Built in the 11th century following the Norman Conquest, Alnwick castle is the home of the 12th Duke of Northumberland, Ralph Percy. Alnwick, a privately owned castle, is the second largest inhabited castle in the UK, beaten to the number one spot by Royal Windsor Castle.
With its medieval architecture and over 700 years of history, Alnwick has become a box office sensation for film and TV locations. The most famous being the Harry Potter films, when the castle became Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Another very famous TV series filmed at the castle was Downton Abbey, where the state rooms, parks and medieval walls were used as Brancaster Castle. This has made Alnwick Castle one of the top film locations in the UK, and a great tourist attraction bringing in more than 600,000 visitors per year. And yes, you can learn to fly a broom and play quidditch!
