yh its cyanide gas tht they give off when snaped they r used to kill butterflys but its also common for ppl to trim a laural hedge down and faint while doing so

I'm no expert, but think of the plants having a black belt in self-defense. Plants, unlike humans, don't kill for sport or to fulfill some unsatisfied need.
