July 4th, 2016. It was the perfect day to try and climb Leatherman Pass. The pass rests just below Leatherman Peak, the second highest mountain in Idaho. I approached from the Sawmill Gulch route from the west. This is the easier way into the mountain as from the east requires a rugged high clearance vehicle, which I didn't have at the time. Even from this approach, I walked up the rocky Forest Road 411 (Sawmill Gulch Road).
The trail is faint as soon as you leave the rocky road into the forest. At times, it disappears for a short distance. But it's a beautiful trail and passes through a number of meadows and by some small streams.
As a reached the pass, the winds were intense! A small weather system was blowing by. But the views were amazing. I'm pretty sure I was the only one on that mountain that day. There's no trailhead and my car was the only one. And looking down the other side from the pass, not another soul in sight. It was a nice solitude.
I only had time to be out for the day, but I want to visit here again to summit Leatherman Peak and pay a visit to Pass Lake. Perhaps I'll take the east route next time and make it a multi-day trip.
