In this video, Lis Nielsen, landscape painter- the Artist in the Woods, presents a larger oil painting tutorial from a study of a southern Arizona scene, “Along the Old el Camino Real Part 2”. You’ll watch Lis demonstrate how she uses her original plein air study as well as an additional gouache study for reference to paint the large oil painting of this beautiful scene.
In part 1, Lis showed artists her method of using gouache to change and make better the original study before proceeding to the large oil canvas for her part 2 video.
Her keen understanding of “good composition” attributes and her continued work towards clarity of color shines in this second part of the “Along the Old el Camino Real” series.
Lis sketched from the plein air in pencil to get the compositional change down, then did the gouache and last, she worked out the large oil.
Lis demonstrates and teaches throughout the video while painting a beautiful rural scene of wispy colorful trees and a backdrop of blue mountains.

The Artist in the Woods is both a skilled artist and a teacher. You will certainly gain a deeper understanding of the artist’s process as you watch her videos- each one providing interesting and beautiful glimpses of nature and an array of insightful tips and tricks for the landscape artist.
California landscape artist, Lis Nielsen, travels in her “paint mobile”, a converted van, and paints on location as well as in her studio in the Sierra Mountains. She has been painting for over 30 years and has learned from many of the countries leading artists. Lis is a natural teacher and enjoys nurturing others along their creative journey. With great effort she works to pass on her knowledgeable and intuitive approach to outdoor painting. Using large broad strokes of color while immersing herself in the natural scene, Lis creates her small outdoor sketches that are later used as reference for larger paintings in the studio.
