The once peaceful township of Alotau in Milne Bay Province needs more police personnel to deal with the recent criminal activities disrupting peace and harmony.
Alotau MP, Charles Abel said the district is in need of more police presence, after an armed gang numbering into the hundreds, exchanged gunfire with local police last night, and then burnt down sections of the water police barracks.
This morning the MP called for a State of Emergency on the Milne Bay Township.
Schools and businesses were closed, because businesses were vandalised by the armed gang.
Police also had to stand guard at the police station, because there were threats to burn it down also.
Abel said a task force was sent after the Provincial Police Commander requested for one, but they still need to get a full manpower allocation.
