Hybrid heat pumps sound like a good balance but am i correct in thinking these are excluded from the government 7.5k grant?

Unfortunately it's not 'NetZero' so only full heat pumps are eligible, still probably cheaper a hybrid with less disruption to the home.

Hi Tom. This is a solution for heating only, It uses a combi boiler via gas for hot water, then uses the heat pump for heating when it works out to be cheaper than gas.

Won't qualify for the boiler upgrade scheme currently set at 7.5k. it doesn't decarbonise your hot water. And if you don't have the right Alpha boiler model, you need to buy the boiler and heat pump, which'll be costly. Maybe suitable for a small number of the UK housing stock.

This is a great marketing video but what about the cost. Having hybrid seems the worst of both world and really hard to understand how the investment of installing a heat pump will ever been worthy to compare on using just a boiler.

my issue with these hybrid systems though is they only cover 5kw other brands offer 12kw hybrids, the average heat loss of new builds is 7-8kw older properties from the 70's often have a heat loss of 15kw, single brick Victorian 20-25kw heat loss, half of the issue there is because of listing your not allowed to alter heat insulation, unless you use a tariff with off peak modes older properties are left with sky high bills, with no alternatives,

@@andrewcunningham1 terrace lose a lot more heat than you think, granted they do retain heat better than detached but that is down to the block combined where air flow is minimlised, but they still can loose up to 11kwh for a 1060s , as my first house was one that had a full heat calculation done by 3 different companies, in 2016, unless they have a east west layout , and still a single brick wall front back, ours had single panel windows as well, you could feel the air through it, 35 k later we cut it down to 8kwh loss, the loft had r20 which was regs at the time, the big issue was insulating the inner walls, at the time insulation was 3 inchs think and eat into the room making it feel cramp. i was only there 13 months due to being re-deployed, but had a thing for older buildings being that they were bigger overall, also being rural with exposure can add another 5kwh loss,

Seems like an interesting solution and a pragmatic step towards lower carbon heating overall without totally shafting people. The system might be suited to milder climates (i.e. the south west) where the heat pumps can run more efficiently on a continuous basis, with the boiler kicking in when there are suddenly weather changes or cold snaps. Hopefully the price point will make this a realistic prospect for people who could only ordinarily afford or finance a boiler replacement. Whilst i think heat pumps are great in new builds (and from exp they work really well in this scenario), I find the inability of the heat pump evangelists to accept their limitations and prohibitive cost for most people quite staggering.

Its very contradictory to say this can "take over" when gas prices surge though when its only a 4KW heat pump and no insulation, radiator, or pipework changes have been made to the property. The heat pump is too small to meet the demand at -2c outside and therefore CANNOT heat the house. This is a very short term narrow minded solution to the problem. Not to mention hot water is still going to be using Gas when prices surge.. the whole marketing concept is flawed here sadly.

What do you say to the people who will not install a heat pump as it's unsuitable? You can just stick with your gas boiler. I am sure you will agree it's better than just a gas boiler. Thanks.

@@AllenHart999 "People" as in the general public are not educated to even understand if their house is suitable or not... Either way a heat pump at a high temperature is better then an undersized heat pump + Gas boiler. if they actually install one able to meet the heat loss. A 9kw or 12kw would of worked here and maybe wouldn't of got a COP of 3 but it would of been better overall then Gas. Then when they improve the house 2-3 years later they can dial the flow temperature back. In this scenario they have to bin an undersized heat pump and gas boiler.
