A reason I think conservative social media sites fail is that screaming slurs into a group of fellow bigots isn't as fun. Without someone to "offend" saying any slur, racist joke, or whatever else just doesn't hit as hard. All these websites seem to have a rush of awful things said and then after a few weeks it's back to the original version so they can go back to thinking they are causing psychic damage to the non-conserative people in their lives. jewish viewer here in reply to your note at 5:06 - the term "goy" isn't a slur for jewish people, but the context it's being used in is definately antisemitic. "goy" is just a yiddish adjective used to describe anyone who's not jewish, and is inherently a neutral word, but because it CAN be used to snidely refer to non-jewish people who are being shitheads (like how a lot of black twitter specifically uses "yt" instead of "white" to refer to white people who are being shitheads), a lot of weirdo far-right antisemitic types like to assume the term is derogatory against antisemites specifically and then use it to label themselves as anti-jewish. the use of that term specifically for a crowdfunding platform is a nod to the old antisemitic canard that jews run various financial institutions from the shadows, which is still unfortunately a pretty common conspiracy today.

I will just say, regarding what you said about women and gaming: women in gaming spaces is still..... A touchy subject. Women are considered "tolerable" when they're just a "decoration"'- not really involved in gaming in any meaningful way. Running into them in UNRANKED matches of multiplayer games? Passing by them in gaming conventions? That's fine. But when women making games? When women's stories are told in games? When women compete professionally in gaming? When women work in computer stores targeting a gamer demographic? When women even just play ranked lobbies of games? Those are all still extremely toxic. I personally worked in a store selling PC parts and every single day without fail, I would have at least one customer who treated me worse than my male colleagues. I had numerous customers argue with me, claiming that I was just a receptionist (in a 40m² retail store..... Because those totally have receptionists) and say things like "I want to talk to a real technician", "I want to talk to a man", etc. I had customers who were absolutely clueless with technology but still thought I was the incompetent one, for example a real interaction I had: Me: (trying to diagnose an issue over the phone of the screen not showing any display) "Is your screen plugged into the motherboard or graphics card?" Customer: "It's plugged into the power supply, duh. I want to talk to someone who actually knows what they're talking about"
@LeoisRichardson
4 ай бұрын
First of all, I'm sorry that happened to you But also def agree that we're not so where we need to be on that issue - I think it's easy for me to look on the past and see how far we've come (in terms of what I as a man can observe) - and there is a lot of progress - but it's still not even close to all the way there. It definitely felt like an imperfect metaphor when I wrote it and even though I tweaked it a lot and I got the approval from the women I know who play games... and they really liked it and were like "haha that's a good comparison"... but I think the toughest part is that the worst shit that men do online is also a complete blindspot for people like me and the experiences that women have with said men are extremely varied but universally negative. So even though my friends said "yes that's def a good idea that's fitting you should include that" - I can totally understand why you would disagree with the premise. It was definitely unclear but I was more thinking about male community figures who used to use vile language openly - like on the commentary mic and in the crowd - who now only maybe do so behind closed doors. I'm addressing this in the next video I'm gonna make (it's taking a while LOL) but sometimes as an ally its easy to get lost in "well I don't do these things, and my friends don't do these things, and I really don't see these things" - but there are so many angry men out there that ruin so many things for everyone and sometimes it's hard to see that if you don't explicitly go looking for it. While at the same time - those men are going out of their way to ruin women's days. The process of making the follow-up video to this one is really forcing me to get out of my comfort zone and really look this issue in the eye and that has made me realize how much I didn't understand that I thought I did. If that makes sense. This is what's making the video take so long because after like two months I'm at an impasse where I now fully grasp that I am physically unable understand the full nuance of the issue - even though I really want to - and it's tough to determine where to go from there. I don't want to throw the video out because I still think like 95% of it is excellent and I've worked very hard on it - but I want to learn from the mistake I made on this video and make sure I never repeat it. I think it's just hard for a know-it-all like me to admit when I'm physically unable to know an answer to a question that I think is important. Because often times there isn't just one answer. Hopefully that paragraph isn't complete gibberish without the context of what I'm working on - but I'm coming to terms with the fact that in the future when I talk about things like that I will never have the full answer. I guess when it comes to the core point of restircting speech to make more people feel comfortable in spaces I think the metaphor's ... fine (?) ...and the segments' .... not exactly something I'm ashamed of... I just know if I was to write that part again today - I would make extra sure that what I said was as narrow as I wanted the example to be and that I would speak with less certainty and make it more explicit that I was speaking from my experience - not as like "a truth". Sorry for the long reply - your comment just really touched on something that I'm struggling to think through right now.
@madeleine61509

@@LeoisRichardson I'm sorry, maybe my comment came across with the wrong tone. While I am a native speaker, I don't speak English on a daily basis anymore since emigrating, so I've gotten rusty. I do completely agree that it's a fair comparison to make, and does hold a lot of similarities. Whether the gaming climate has improved or not, your point still stands that """free speech""" (meaning "hate speech") ostracises huge demographics. Gaming has definitely improved for women since the late 2000s, that is undeniable. Back then, even just saying you liked video games as a woman was controversial and would get responses saying you're just a "fake gamer". Even if you played the same games, people would accuse you of faking, or not being interested in the game for the "right reasons" (e.g. liking Pokémon because it has cute creatures vs. strategic and tactical RPG gameplay). People constantly said things like "you probably only like GIRLY games!" or "you probably play easy games because girls always suck at real video games!" There are still people who do that, but it's much less common and typically comes from young people who haven't learnt yet. I really enjoyed this video and agree with every point you made; my comment wasn't meant to come from a place of criticism or disagreement. It's just after watching that very small segment about gaming and women, I thought of my own experiences and wanted to comment about it (very egotistical to think anyone cares, I know). There are not many women who have that same work history of being in a store for PC parts directly targeting a gamer demographic... That might sound like "I'm not like other girls 🤪", but I'm just speaking from my experience of going on a company retreat, and being literally the ONLY SINGULAR woman alongside over 100 men. I can understand the struggle of feeling like you don't have an answer. It's something I have struggled with and that mindset of not knowing what to do about it was actually what caused me to lose my job at the PC parts store. My employer blatantly didn't know how to deal with the sexism that was thrown at me day in and day out, so they just decided to get rid of me. To avoid a lawsuit for unjust termination, they gave two reasons: 1) "you seem unhappy in this job" - who wouldn't be when receiving verbal abuse or sexist comments every day, and 2) "you can barely ever get through a customer interaction without asking for assistance from one of your coworkers" - I was basically forced to ask my coworkers for a second opinion when a customer refused to listen to my advice simply because I'm a woman. I don't mean to just stick my own opinion into your video or try to dictate your content, but it could be worth acknowledging the fact that there is no easy answer for sexism in your own video, and maybe that's even the note you could end it on. Who knows: maybe if my employer had understood that it's normal to not have an answer or solution to sexism, I might not have ended up unemployed 😅 I do hope you put out the video- at your own pace, of course. I am greatly looking forward to it, as I think your approach to these subjects as well as the points you put forward are very strong....... And sorry that this comment has likely been borderline incoherent.
@LeoisRichardson
3 ай бұрын
Don't apologize these were wonderful comments and they allowed me to reflect on what I said and realize much better what I meant. The segment always seemed a little wrong to me even after getting the approval stamp on it from some women I know personally - and I think that's because I never made it explicitly clear that what I was talking about was my experience seeing less hate and more women. And I think for most women that's the case, which is why I think it's "good enough" but I don't think it's perfect because I will never be able to cover all of women's experiences in gaming because... I'm not a woman. And I'm quite the perfectionist so that distinction matters a lot to me. It's jus my next video covers internet harassment of women pretty extensively as a major point and I couldn't get it to sound right no matter how many times I wrote and re-edited and comments like the ones you left allowed me to realize it's because I set out on an impossible task. I've finally realized how I want to cover the topic (as a straight white man) with the help of comments like yours. Thanks for taking time to explain your experiences it is appreciated and really helped my creative process.

For me, I've found (myself when I was confused with one often, and-) my female friends can often get by this pretty easily by A: muting people or B: bantering. Like, even once I was recognizably a dude, shit talk was still shit talk 24/7. There's just a cultural gap between how men talk (especially around women/to women) to each other, and men shit talking in game chat. And so many people are so hateful, regardless of gender, that the gender card is just an added way to insult you - not an instigating factor. And remember the rules of the internet - no feeding the trolls. The friends that have the hardest time consistently are the ones that argue back with the people insulting. From what I've observed, 80-90% of the time, bantering back defuses the situation entirely - but again, a lot of the girls I've played with that get into arguments in VC are the ones that immediately get mad and yell at the troll calling them a bitch - even if they called me one first lmao.

The actual answer is that there was a brief period of time before ww2 when the US and USSR didn't have any beef with each other, and were in fact trading with each other quite a bit (the rabid anticommunism in the US didn't appear until right at the end of the war)
@escthedark3709

@@vurpo7080 No, the USSR and the rest of the allied forces were only allies by necessity. The majority of the west wasn't far away from Germany in terms of how unfavorably they viewed communism, and the USSR never liked the rest of the allies by any stretch of the imagination either. The alliance between the USSR and the rest of the west was tense from the start, and the only reason that the alliance happened was because of a common enemy that was imminently dangerous to both the west and the USSR. Trade does not imply anything approaching an alliance. There's limited trade going on between Russia and much of the west, even while Russia is invading Ukraine and the west is backing Ukraine against Russia. Anti-communist sentiment was lesser during WWII than after, but that's because the axis was trying to invade while the USSR wasn't yet. The cold war wasn't some new animosity, but was rather continued animosity from before the war. Socialism demands the destruction of capitalist states, and the both the USSR and the west were well aware of that fact. During WWII, the US had come to realize that it couldn't just sit back and provide material aid while Europe burned, which had largely been the US plan for dealing with the axis at the start of the war. As a result, the USSR posing a threat to the west in Europe after the war meant that the US saw the USSR as a threat to itself, as the illusion that the US wouldn't be greatly affected by an authoritarian takeover of Europe was thoroughly broken. The existence of nukes after the war only served to make the threat of war loom even higher, thus making the threat of communism seem all the more dangerous.

Due to the amount of comments i see misinterpreting your points i thought i'd drop an analogy for those who don't understand his points: You can go to jail for hiring a hitman. Speaking to someone is perfectly legal, and the exchange of money is perfectly legal. But the inciting of hate or otherwise promoting harm to others is not protected. Therefore, by disallowing hate speech it effectively allows people who otherwise are harmed and have been literally killed in mass for being different to express their views and add to a conversation. It's exactly the same to how before the internet people couldn't express openly hateful things because it meant someone would simply hit you for saying stupid things.

Clearly you do not like republicans [Hinting at a low IQ but I digress], so what happens when a republican president or state senators and governors who are republican get access to hate speech laws? You probably will just shit yourself because you think blue good red bad because you live in the world of team fortress 2 where hiring the spy to kill someone is the equivalent of saying you think trannies smell bad 💀

@@ijon-y4549 While i do agree that the analogy isn't perfect, you misunderstand that hate speech is not "what i don't agree with". Hate speech by definition is speech intended to attack a member of a group or a group as a whole. Therefore it is speech with the intent to harm said group which in of itself is the problem. If hate speech was just what is disagreed on then our legislative systems in any system simply would not progress in accordance to developing taboos

I mostly agree with you if you're talking about death threats and inciting violence. Most of the examples shown in this video and the previous videos aren't death threats or inciting violence. Especially Salty Cracker, which was used as an example. Opinions outside the overton window aren't death threats or content that incites violence. You could argue that such content may cause someone to be violent as motivation, but that's the fault of the person being motivated, and that reflects that the person being motivated is dangerous. Someone can get motivated to join Antifa and get violent by watching far-left content or learning more about workers being exploited. That's why I agree with the first reply under your comment.

It might be a bad thing that advertisers get to dictate what you are or are not allowed to say on a platform. However, that is a result of capitalism which the alt-right seems to love and says is great and the free market will regulate itself, yet then get mad when large corporations are telling them to shut up or they wont help pay for the platform they're on. Honestly. I miss the days before social media when the most popular gathering spaces were various forums and chat rooms. The chat rooms I remember were hit and miss, but most of the forums usually had really good ratio between moderators and active users. I've never felt as safe on any social media platform as I did on those old niche forums, and it's sad to see how many of them have died/transitioned to a facebook group/fallen into barely populated obscurity. Those were the kinds of sites where it was at least mostly safe to unleash teenagers, since there was some level of responsible adult supervision going on. The social media sites we've had for 20-ish years now (and newer ones that are competing with the old) are just too big to be consistently moderated, and a lot of the moderation work seems to have been automated. Safety is expensive, especially on large scale. The forums were often moderated by volunteers that were passionate members of a small community, but you can't rely on volunteer moderation on huge social media sites.

@TheRyulord this has me genuinely curious, can you provide me any links or info on this? Because I have just viewed the market and capitalism as near synonymous. Capitalism is a system of economics with a value ascribed to goods and services and payment rendered for them with the environment in which the capitalism happens being the market. But capitalism is the free expression and structure of the market having less control. Is there a better distinction on how, capitalism and the market are not so deeply interlinked? Capitalism is the companies changing because of the pursuit of money, and changing to fit the market, is how you do capitalism best. So the pursuit of money, capitalism, is making company's change to fit the market (bigotry is not as profitable).
@TheRyulord
Ай бұрын
@@dannypestolesi712 Sure. The Wikipedia articles for "Capitalism", "State Capitalism", "Market Socialism", and "Socialism" will probably clear things up but I'll give you the tldr. Your main point of confusion seems to just be over the definition of capitalism. Capitalism is when the means of production (which is defined as any capital that isn't labor) are privately owned and operated for profit. Contrast this with socialism, which is when the means of production are owned collectively, and also with markets, which are when individuals or groups exchange goods, services, or information. Under these standard definitions you can see that both market capitalism and market socialism are both possible. You can imagine a situation in which every company is owned by its workers for example, with each worker getting an equal voting share in the company they work for, but that each of these companies still operates in a market economy where they compete with one another and try to maximize profit because that's what's in the worker-owner's interests. This would produce the same outcome as market capitalism when it comes to advertisers avoiding controversial issues. Markets and capitalism are often conflated probably due to a combination the Soviet Union having a mostly non-market economy and because advocates of capitalism find that defending markets is easier than defending capitalism.
@TheRyulord
Ай бұрын
@@dannypestolesi712 Wikipedia's articles on "Capitalism", "Socialism", "Market Socialism", and "State Capitalism" would probably be sufficient. The thing that seems to be tripping you up is just definitions though. Markets - When individuals or groups exchange goods, services, or information, with or without money. Means of Production - All capital except labor. Capitalism - When the means of production are privately owned and operated for profit. Socialism - When the means of production are collectively owned. Imagine a country in which every company is owned by its workers, with each worker-owner getting 1 voting share in their company. The companies in this country still exist in a market economy and must compete with one another and find innovative ways to increase revenue and decrease expenses because that's in the best interest of the worker-owners. This still results in advertisers avoiding controversial topics since it's bad for business, just like in a capitalist market. The conflation between markets and capitalism was probably the result of the Soviet Union having a mostly non-market economy or advocates of capitalism noticing that markets are easier to defend than capitalism.

Intolerance of intolerance is the only way to a tolerant society - Karl Popper ;)

I heard that phrase many times, but it isn't well-founded. First of all it's based on a slippery slope argument which should raise suspicions.

@@ik9175533 The best explenation I've heard is that tolerance is like a policy. And those who do not follow the policy are not covered by the policy. So intolerance does not have to be tolerated, as intolerance does not follow the policy of tolerance. Overall, tolerance should be a _mutual_ default.

@@ik9175533 it's only a slippery slope if you take the, imo extrem, take that intolerance in tolerant society would lead to an intolerant society. But yeah, people most of the time only know Popper's quote (if they don't butcher it).

One of the fundamental structural ironies of the universe is that progress tends to be made by people who are progressive. Broadly supported platforms tend to be operated by people who are inclusive. This isn't wordplay, it's not politics, it's causal. I think it may also be the only advantage we have against bullies, thugs, thieves and spoilers. And if you chart the rise and fall of cultures, it's clear that it's not always enough. If that Overton window shifts far enough, the businesses (and other social institutions) will cannibalise society.

Conservatism is inherently linked to stagnation, and stagnation is inherently linked to death. These people cling to a past that no longer exists, then wonder why the have no place in the future, or the present.

It's weird how society will often reward handsomely the worst of us with money, power, or fame ... or some combo of all of the above. And then they ruin things for everyone else.

30:50 The issue is not where do you draw the line, it is _who_ draws the line. Do you want this Supreme Court or another Trump administration deciding what is and isn't hate speech? I'm guessing anything anti-Christian and pro-pluralistic will be deemed hateful and all the right wing hate will be deemed acceptable.
