Alta is my #1 in Utah, and top #3 in the country. It's a great resort, and this is an excellent guide. I didn't know where any of these great runs were on my first trip, and left underwhelmed. The mountain rewards people would want to put in a little work for their turns whether that be traversing, side stepping, or boot packing.

Great video! Can't go wrong with highboy on a sunny powder day, but if it's overcast I go straight for hourglass chute typically. Less people fighting for the snow, but very steep, nicely spaced trees, and great visibility. I'd love to see you guys do an overview of Catherine's Area and Keyhole as well.

Great video. I started skiing Alta back in 1989 on February vacation. It takes a while to learn your way around so skiers often don’t experience what you skied in this video. I retired 10 years ago and started spending the season at Alta and skiing with friends that are locals. Skiing with them Opened up everything you skied. They got me into Backcountry touring so this opened up even more amazing terrain and snow at Alta.

What a coincidence! During our last day at Alta, I had a crash on Mambo, someone cutover to my lane and hit me, then he ran away. I hurt some tissues near my ribs and my left hand. But next day we drove to Aspen Highlands and skied Highland bowl, which probably didn't help the recovery. Sometimes groomers are most dangerous because you have no control of others. Really glad you dad recovered quickly and skied big sky later!

Great video! Impressive skiing family! We skied Alta this weekend and the traverses were the hardest part. In this video, they look fairly calm but, this weekend, the traverses were full of big bumps/rollers back to back to back. I’ve heard people say to let your knees absorb the bumps but I don’t see how that is possible if you’re carrying any speed. They were too deep and too close together. Do they get worse when it hasn’t snowed in a while?
@TheBlacktulips
2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for late response. High traverse does get worse when it doesn’t snow, it gets bumpy over time and rocky. It takes experience and confidence to get better as you can see local flying through them. Yes, using knees to absorb is the key just like moguls. Practice is the key and okay with some steep Will help

My husband has been talking about your videos for weeks! He loves them and shared them with me, they are great, thanks for posting. I have a question, we are heading out there in a few weeks and we usually rent skis, but this time I want to bring my own, I love my K2 One Luv, I know they are old, but I have so much confidence on them they are 70 under foot, and I have Volkyl Kenja 85 under foot, would you recommend one over the other or bring both? We are expert skiiers and will be skiing much of what you are showing, but when I rent, I probably end up exchanging a few times to get the right ones.
@TheBlacktulips
Жыл бұрын
It depends on what types of the run you want to ski. If you want to stay on groomer, then 70 underfoot is perfect. However, if the condition is powder or chopped powder and you want to ski off trail, 70 underfoot will not do well as they don’t provide enough float. In that case, 85 underfoot is better, in powder, you may want to use even wider ski than 85 but 85 can work. Maybe make a decision before your trip? If there is no snow in forecast then 70, other 85 or rent

@TheBlacktulips

Actually not intentional, there wasn’t a single entrance, you can pretty much go thru any gaps between the trees, then you will be skiing one of the 3 lines in west rustlers - jitterbug, no name or Santa clause.

@TheBlacktulips

Somewhere between 5 to 30? All depends on how much we ski early season in Alta/Snowbird. Once the base gets to 75", you don't get scratches often.

Thanks for the guidance! We just moved to SLC and this gives me a lot of help for finding my way around Alta this winter. Can I ask what width skis you used? People here keep saying you need 115 mms underfoot, but I wonder if I could ski that snow with something more narrow, like 88?
@TheBlacktulips
3 жыл бұрын
I skis Salomon QST 106. I think it is total BS that you nee 115 underfoot. There is probably 10 runs per season that 115 skis works the best. But most of the time, 115 is not as good as narrower skis due to lack of maneuverability. 88mm should work most of the time, but during the morning of those 2-3 really big powder day, you may wish you have a wider skis. But it will definitely work.
@TheBlacktulips
3 жыл бұрын
I’d say buying a 100-110 underfoot and get use to it and you can use it for your everyday skis. It takes skills to make a wider ski work on icy conditions, also takes skill to make a narrow skis in powder. 88mm should work in SLC but something wider should be better. Just don’t go over 110. My wife had a 108mm and decided switch back to a 102mm for better control

So I’ve skied a good portion of UT, CO, VT, etc., on Blizzard Brahmas (88’s). As a front side ski, they cut really quickly on groomers. In back side powder bowls (12” plus) I don’t float as much and have to work to hop the turns, but it’s totally do-able, especially for those of us who started skiing in the 80’s/90’s on what are now “skinny skis”. The biggest thing I had to learn for powder skiing was not to try and keep my legs plastered parallel like I would frontside (which is a heck of a lot harder on parabolics!). Envious of ya’all in SLC with your beautiful ski season!

I have a question. If i want to get to gunsight i have to go on the gate left of Colins right? And do i have to go over that cliff with the rope that you took to eddies high nowhere or can i get to the top of gunsight without going over it?
@TheBlacktulips
Жыл бұрын
If you want to go to the top of the gunsight, then yes, you need to go left after getting off colins, then side step, you don't need to go over the cliff with the rope, you can go underneath that cliff to gunsight. Alternatively, if you dont mind missing the 3 turns at the top, you can go to the lower entrance of gunsight which takes less efforts as shown in the video.
