Great video Mike. Was about to order a new power sterring pump as I assumed wrongly that was the culprit. Symptoms you describe (noisy rattle accompanied with flapping belt) match exactly what I'm hearing on my 2001 TDI passat. Its also done 73,000 which seems to align with the espected service life of the alternator pulley. Will be ordering a new pulley and pulley removal tool off interent. Thanks again.

@@johnbeck5795 okay fair enough. I bought an electric impact gun on eBay for another job. Was only about 40-50 pounds. It’s 450Nm and because it’s electric there is no battery to worry about. In my case I also initially used the wrong tool. It was T50 torx. It spun in the shaft and slightly damaged the shaft. But was still able to hammer the correct M10 spline tool onto the alternator shaft and was then able to easily remove the freewheel pulley.

If it is a large aluminium pulley, "locking test" wont work cse they are kinda solid all the time. The other indicator of this aluminium pulley failing is a black dusty resin gathered on the casing of the alternator next to the pulley. This idea is terrible,there is ordinary clutch replacement for this aluminium type. Symptoms you are dexcribing do sound like a faulty pulley allright. If it was my vehicle i would chance changing the pulley.

Hello mate, Your alternator definitely has a clutch pulley on it. Now,does the squeak happens when the engine fires or is it only during the starting of the engine ie,: when the starter cranks the engine? If it squeaks just after starting it is more then likely the clutch pulley,but if it does it when starter turns the engine it is less likely the clutch,because alternator does not charge then so no pressure on clutch pulley.
@WestronicsIrl

And if your clutch pulley siezes solid,the automatic tensioner jumps like mad,because it starts douing what clutch pulley should do,which is Taking the kinetic force of the "strech-destrech motion" away. Question 2) -Most cars manufactured after year 2000 have a clutch pulleys on them, mostly they are diesel engines that the clutch pulley is used (not sure why but i think its due to the fact that diesel engines have more torque than petrol,so there is more forces working on the fan belt.

Famous is right, Ones on the megane are a bit diffrent,they are a big aluminium lump of a thing. The best of knowing if it is worn out is to have a look at the casing of the alternator, when them pulleys wear they will go sideways a bit and rub of the casing of the alternator. If you can see that your pulley have rubbed of a bit of the alternator it means thet it have to be replaced,alltho the symptoms of these pulleys going be the same like in the video.

Hello mate, Your alternator is a popular denso type and it has a clutch pulley. Noise that you are talking about can be caused by either the clutch pulely or the bearings in the alternator. Both of them are easy to check,just take the belt of the alternator and give it a spin with your hand. That should give you a fair idea are the bearings quiet,if they are it means that it has to be the clutch pulley.

@allanmichealsmith Not at all,there are two options,in some models alternator just comes off after removing two main bolts,plug wire,and main positive wire. In other models underneath the alternator there is a bolt with a hexagon key which holds the viscous fan,which is in the way sometimes. One way or another you never have to remove a bumper and all the rest of it. Hope this helps.

I presume the reason for the clutch pulley is so that the alternator doesn't stop quickly when the engine suddenly slows or stops. If it did, it could make spikes of current as the magnetic fields collapse. Right? Is a clutch pulley design fairly universal in modern cars, or is it only in some vehicles? Does a rebuilt alternator come with a new clutch pulley or do you have to swap it over?

Back to the saga of the renault megane alternator pulley. I changed the pulley and the belt flapping stopped, so I thought everything was ok. However, the auxiliary belt is screeching like mad when the steering is on full lock. I have been told that the most probable cause is a defective alternator/clutch pulley. I was also to the way to check the pulley was - its just a ratchet,should turn one way and free wheel the other. My new pulley did not do this, so do I have a faulty new pulley?

Hello Donna, If the noises are irregular it is more then likely the clutch pulley. Consequence of driving like that are quite severe. The pulley will fall off and destroy the shaft on the alternator,which means that you might need a new one. Better get that checked.

Howdy,great questions here. 1) Need for clutch pulley: They are used because in modern cars "fan belts" are much longer than they used to be.And as you might not know when the engine is idling its motion its not smooth,the revs go up and down thousands of times per minute (every time there is a combustion in a chamber the fan belt gets a little "pull"). Due to this the fan belt streches an destreches thousands times per minute,

Thanks for the great video, I have a unique issue that you may be able to figure out. I have installed a re-manufactured Ultima 120 A with (what I thought) was a clutch pulley on a 2001 Beetle GLS 1.8 Turbo (www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Alternator/01468/C0330.oap?keyword=alternators&year=2001&make=Volkswagen&model=Beetle&vi=5015985). There was a parasitic draw from the alternator, hence the replacement. Keep in mind there was no prior generator light indicator before. Now when I get my rpms above 3000, the pulley clutch disengages and the car stops charging from 14Vs to 11Vs! There is a noticable "pop" when the pulley disengages. If I keep driving, soon the ABS light comes on and the traction control light (I believe this is the ECU shutting down non-essential systems to power core systems) and if I continue to run the car above that 3000 RPM threshold the car will remove acceleration ability (ECU) and slow the car down to a crawl (no acceleration). I have to pull over and idle for 3-4 minutes before the car will reset itself; all the gauges will go to zero and then the warning indicators (Battery, ABS, and Traction Control) will turn off. I suspect a faulty decoupler or clutch pulley. The belts are tight and I've gotten the battery, alternator, and starter checked, as well as all the connections; they are in good condition! Any help would be appreciated

We had (nearly?) frozen pulley and it resulted in belt flapping and pulley breaking down. Luckily it stayed in place tilted and the belt dropped from the tensioner and didn't break anything. The tensioner was able to keep the belt strict enough to not cause noise, though. Of course, I didn't know that the belt flapping was a clear sign for frozen pulley. After replacing the alternator the belt goes smoothly so the tensioner didn't get damaged.

Mihai Paraschivescu some regulator/rectifier systems actually have this feature. The alternator may take 20 seconds to begin charging fully. I don't know if this is the case with your particular make/model but in systems that don't run a "shunt" type system I have come across this. It's not a problem. Check voltage after 30 seconds without revving the engine. You should see the voltage come up to about 14v by then. I hope this helps.
