Oh, I'm sorry you got covid. I caught it last winter and lost smell too. Got a prescription for prednisone that restored it completely in a week. I wish you a prompt recovery and thank you for the always great reviews that make me discover more contemporary American writers (I'm French) and I also appreciate your insights into the French authors that I know, but it's always captivating to hear from foreign readers and critiques. My favourite 20th century French writer is Henri Bosco and I've heard that the new translation of Malicroix is really good. In this time of lockdown you may enjoy this story of meditative isolation. Hope to see more fine videos from you soon.

Thanks so much! I'm all good now. During lockdown I read Malicroix and Dissipatio H.G by Guido Morselli--indeed, great COVID books! As for the French, I have really enjoyed my time with Blanchot, Senges, and Enard this year. Happy reading!

I've read a ton of Evenson's stuff, all of Unraveling, some of Collapse, Last Days, and numerous of his stories in (so many) various collections, thought I haven't read Altmann's Tongue. You've perfectly explained his style and why I keep gravitating to him even when many of his stories can be nearly infuriatingly simple, but that is what's used to build tension and this mood of unease throughout all of his work. I'd love to hear what you have to think about any of his stories, and great selection of a quote at the end! Definitely want to grab Altmann's Tongue soon.

One of his best books. I'm so sorry you had Covid! It sucks!! My wife lost taste for two weeks and we were on vacation and had so many restaurants to try! It was awful! But as you said, Brian Evenson can still be enjoyed! I think Evenson was so brave to stick by his writing, even in the face of Brigham Young and religious adversity. One of the best writers of our time.

A great analysis as always, I hope you get well soon. I have a first edition of Altmann’s Tongue, and the text on the dust jacket talks exclusively about how Evenson is a devout Mormon, and the way the stories channel that. It’s interesting, and a bit funny, to read now. I attended a reading he did in 2019, and my favorite anecdote he told was about getting his job at BYU, largely on the strength of his forthcoming first collection of stories (Altmann’s Tongue). He warned the interview panel that the book may have some questionable content, and, after a pause, one of them asked him if there was any sex. Evenson said there was not, at which point the issue was dismissed. I enjoy Evenson most in short bursts. I once read three of his collections in a year, and it started to feel like I was reading Evenson in imitation of himself. I think A Collapse of Horses is my favorite of his books.

Evenson is a great short story writer -I have all his collections - but if you want to read him at greater length I would urge you to try his novel IMMOBILITY which is ostensibly SF being set in a post-apocalyptic world, but don't let that put you off(!) it's truly wonderful.
@LeafbyLeaf

At this point, Evenson's style has hooked me, so the genre nature of a given book is totally fine. Plus, his short piece in Unsaid was also ostensibly post-apocalyptic sci-fi and it was wonderful! Thanks so much!

I had the privilege of translating and publishing the Spanish version of the novella The Warren, although I think his short stories are unparalleled, especially in Song for the Unraveling of the World, though I haven’t had the chance to read his latest collection yet. And he’s probably competing with Chris Via for the title of the nicest man in the US.

Often you cause me to buy that book outright. But this time you've gone too far. I've never heard of Evanson until today. I looked him up immediately and now intend to buy as much of his stuff as I can. My budget can't take this!

Haha! Trust me--I am well acquainted with this conflict. But I learned a trick to make it all OK. You simply change your conception of "buying books" into that of "investing." Ergo, you're investing your money in a commodity with guaranteed ROI. In any case, it helps me (and my dwindling bank account) feel justified. :)
