This video presents the bells d1 -e1 -g1 -h♭1 [re3 -mi3 -sol3 -si♭1] of palace church St. Michael in Altshausen.
The oldest bell still existing today in the palace Church of St. Michael is the large bell [1]. It was cast at the Volmer and Kisling bell foundry in Biberach in 1510. The fact that this bell still rings today is nothing short of a miracle. In addition to the war-related deliveries, the bell also survived a crack that ran from the sharp to almost the bonnet over the entire bell flank. That such damage should prove repairable is not a matter of course!
In 1666, the small bell [4] was added to the peal of bells at that time. This bell was cast by the founders Rosier from Lorraine, who were probably travelling from Reutlingen to Upper Swabia at the time.
These two bells, which still exist today, had a sister cast in 1487. However, this bell, called Osanna, became defective at the beginning of the 18th century and had to be recast. Thus, in 1733, the present bell [2] was cast by the Schmelz brothers, which still partly bears the dedications and images of its predecessor.
In the time of the Kingdom of Württemberg, Altshausen was also to receive a representatively large bell. Around 1910, the historic belfry was removed and the bells were moved to a steel belfry to make room for a large bell, which was never cast.
Thus, even after the Second World War, only a lost smaller bell [3] was replaced by the Grüninger bell foundry. The compartment for the large bell is empty to this day.
