I liked Alun Hoddinott a lot. Just before a performance of one of his operas in Cardiff, I was the principal trombonist, he asked what I wanted to drink. I replied a small sherry. He ordered me a half pint of sherry - and my performance reflected the fact. Good composer, nevertheless!

It says in his Guardian obituary that " his wine-generous hospitality was proverbial"

Yes, it certainly was "wine-generous hospitality". After giving a performance of Hoddinott's Piano Concerto No. 1 (Op. 19), I commissioned Alun's Piano Sonata No. 10 and visited him in Cardiff in December 1987 to discuss his earlier piano sonatas with him. He put me at ease, and around midnight, after several hours of entertaining chat about music in general (not just his music), I finally sat at his piano to play and found that my hands were absolutely unresponsive, like two bunches of soft bananas, due to the wine. I literally didn't play a note, because as soon as I positioned my hands on the keyboard to play the opening of Sonata No. 3 I realised it was a lost cause, as I couldn't even judge how far to stretch them to play the opening octaves. I giggled, he laughed, we gave up without him hearing me play even a single note, and went back to discussing music instead. Like Keith, I liked Alun a lot. The photographs of Alun sometimes look severe, but he was down to earth and had a real sense of humour.

@@raymondclarke7266it’s regrettable that so much of his music is not on sale. The OUP website is a nightmare anyway, but they only have a handful of his works in their catalogue listed.

With its' menacingly mysterious opening, I felt as if I were listening to it at the right time of the year - just before Hallowe'en! The whole symphony is as atmospheric as a haunted house or a graveyard at midnight. An apparition materializes at 11:05, only to vanish at 12:07. A skeletons' dance begins the second movement; then at about 17:33 the ghosts join in. At 18:44 they all chase after me; I attempt to escape them, but at 23:01 they capture me! I know now I should give out some Hallowe'en candy this year. Kidding aside, this is a dark-hued, but beautiful work entirely typical of the composer.

❤❤❤ Haunting, intriguing...unsettling, and complex symphonic work.

Very mysterious beginning, like Ronald says below ! Hoddinott's harmonic language seems highly complex here and the music remains in tension for most of the Symphony. The last minute or so has somewhat placid harmony; 23.45 - End). Awesome dissonant harmony ! Look forward to listening to more music by Hoddinott.

A beautiful symphony by a great Welsh Master. If I may ask, what is the painting you have used here?

Why hasn't every major symphony orchestra taken up this piece? And will it ever get a second performance?

An interesting piece: the second movement is unmistakably 'North By Northwest' :-) I'd prefer that adagio to move on a bit though. Plenty of detail in the score that can't get heard through the sometimes thick orchestration. But some beautiful, soft chamber-music like passages.

Thx for uploading. Seems to have been unreleased to digital/CD. I can hear the analog tape hiss. Is this from a master tape?

does not add too much to his the whole composer´s work, to be honest. Undefined, vague, "foggy".

I agree about the Adagio - it could go a tad faster and still be an Adagio. It lacks any rhythmic impetus in this performance,
