Yup! I have known I had curly hair since I was a child. But at 34, I just started to learn how to take care of it. I straightened it all my life. No one knew what to do with it. The only other person in my family with curly hair is my grandmother. But she only straightens it. Her parents were Arabic but pretended to be French when they came to the US. And my great grandmother saw the curly hair as something that could expose them, so she shamed my grandmother. Who in turn shamed me. Without really realizing what she was doing. Anyways, now I'm doing it correctly. And no more crazy poof hair after drying it! Which my family would make fun of me for and took as a sign my hair was unhealthy. I have had the same stylist for 15 years. She told me my hair was the healthiest she had ever seen it. I'm really happy I started this process.

Yes! I'm a hair stylist. You can totally rock the wavy look! Less heat damage on your hair, too! You need to do what we call a cocktail. A creme leave in conditioner mixed with a gel or mouse. Works like a charm.

@bshows14

@Stella If you use gel, then you just mix the gel and leave in in your hand, rub together, and apply. (I find that the best way is this: post shower, take a dry towel, and flip head over and scrunch hair. Then apply product and scrunch again and air dry or diffuse.) It works great. If you're going to use a mouse, then yes, separately! I :) Also to note, I would brush hair before shower.. don't brush or comb through after cause it pulls the curls out.

Any products you buy off of the shelf, even salon quality, are highly fragrance and packed with chemicals. I try to do as natural as possible. I never found out because my hair was always “unruly” so I brushed and straightened and killed it for years. One time I was with a group and we decided to impulsively buy a slip n slide and dump a ton of dawn on it. Well we did. My hair was so dry at the end and my friend who has coils was like, so distraught over how dry my hair looked, she had brought her leave in conditioner. She told me to just bare with her and use it, she said to just scrunch it in for more even application and sure enough beautiful defined 3b-3c curls popped right on up. She like freaked out and dragged me straight to her house. It’s one of my best memories because for the next like week I basically lived at her house because she wanted to help me with my hair. She never had a sister, and mine was like 15 years younger than me so I never had an older sister, so we got to play those roles for a while and we’re still playing them. Wrapping your hair around the brush might actually diminish your waves. Wavy hair goes back and forth in one dimension whereas curly hair wraps in a helix shape, which is why wrapping hair around something helps curls but not waves. Trying to make a curl out of a wave may flatten anything you get naturally out of scrunching. You have to go with the “grain” of the hair. (Note: I’m not a hair dresser, but have gone from thinking I had straight hair to wavy hair to recently finding that I have curly hair so this is just what I’ve gathered from my personal research) Hope this helps! ❤
@s.w.5686
Жыл бұрын
Hairdresser here! And definitely seconded. Brush styling can work, but right now its best to listen to your hair and have it tell you it's shape. Try putting your products in your hair right after a shower, while your hair is still very wet, and then scrunching with just your hands, and shaking the hair at the roots. Then you can scrunch out the water and either diffuse or air-dry or plop. Whichever works, although the less you touch your hair the better. Oh! And adding in gel and / or mousse before scrunching will give it more definition and hold, so the curls maintain their shape even after a plop or diffuse. Welcome to the curly girl club! Edit: I like how you called it the "grain" of the hair, I might use that😂.

As a former hairdresser who focused on curly hair, I have one advise. Literally just keep at it and the curl pattern will become stronger over time. I discovered my own curlpattern this way and helped so many like you realize they actually have curls and/or waves. It takes a while for the true nature of your hair to show when you've taught your hair to be straight for so long. I've even seen situations where someone has more curls towards their roots because that hair hasn't been "mistreated" for as long.

Some people may be like me and have hair that is fine as well as textured, so the curls have always been closer to the roots. Even when I was a little girl, and my hair seemingly looked “semi straight” and was bright blonde hair, I’d still get curlicues popping up all over the place. They really liked to show up by the top of my head, near my ears, and especially near my temples back then. As I got older, and my hair got “mistreated” in so many ways, I still had curlier hair closer to my roots. My hair even looked more wavy for the first half of my life, but then the more I experimented with it the curlier it got. Yet, no matter what I did, 1 thing always rang true for me: the longer my hair is the less tight my curls are. My hair has also constantly been described as “fine but lots of it”, and it can sometimes feel and look “poofy” no matter what I do. The only thing that has easily and unquestionably helped to calm it down is my natural oils, so the longer it’s been since a wash the shinier and healthier it looks (up to about a week or 2).

I may also add finger twirling to make it a little bit more defined. you can put a scarf or tshirt on in the video just to keep your hair in place. at night (when you're not showing again) you should definitely make sure your hair is tightly wrapped so your waves don't end up all weird in the morning sorry about the whole routine lol I just thought it might help. all hair is a little different so if you cant find anything that's working how you like it to, you should talk to a stylist or you might even have a different hair texture

I have wavy hair but have so much damage. Here's how I get mine to stay wavy: first I brush my hair with a wet and dry brush before and during the shower (as long as I have it conditioned). Because of my damage, my hair won't hold waves as well if I brush after my wash. After the shower I will take a towel and scrunch the access water away and leave the waves there. Take the wet towel with you to style. I put first a hydrating style cream in (I use Morocco style cream) and scrunch it in (do not straighten your waves). Once you have a good amount in use a hold moose on your damp hair and really scrunch it (maybe 15-20 times with and without the towel). I them will use an air dry formula because heat damages my hair more or if I don't have time I'll defuse. Don't hold your defused down scrunch it in your hair and hold for a few seconds. It will create wavy volume. Make sure you dry your scalp (gently) because it can hold your hair down more. To get rid of any crunch take a small amount of heathy oil to your dry ends and again scrunch don't pull. Trust me.... your hair is just like mine and it works wonders.

Brush straight after washing whilst still very wet. Tie it up in a towel for a few minutes then let it down to dry naturally. Then I don't brush it again until next time my hair is wet. The longer I've done this, the better it has become, and it seems quite time saving compared to normal washing and brushing. Try it! And let me know the results 😊

Hi Helen, I was advised to do this as part of "the curly girl method". Using quite a lot of conditioner (I always had to anyway as I have long, thick hair) means for me it's quite easy to brush through after washing. I haven't missed the shampoo at all. In between washes I do find my hair tangles up a bit, but honestly it's worth it for me to just leave it as it is, with beachy looking waves. Fortunately I don't have anyone trying to run their hands through my hair - I don't know if that's normal or not 😂 I also cut my hair in a way to encourage layers, which I think helps the curls. So basically I wake up in the morning and my hair is ready to go for the day! And it means I skip on the shampoo stage, blow drying, brushing and styling. For me it's a real time saver and looks much better than before I started doing this. I guess I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you in case you do try it. Best wishes 🤞

It’s because your hair seems straight when you brush it out but something is off, like it’s frizzy or flipping out or little curls/waves in a couple spots, so then you just straighten it. Growing up I would just brush it out right after the shower like my mom taught me. It would always come out frizzy and I chalked it up to just having unhealthy hair because of how much heat I’ve used in middle school. In my family, none of my female cousins or my sister has wavy hair so for me I never thought it to be a possibility. It wasn’t until I was in college where I found out there was actually a method in taking care of waves and that my dads side of the family has more wavy hair lol

it’s more confusing than you’d think 😭 there are different types of wavy hair, and some of them are very subtle especially if you’re used to heat styling. if i blow dry my hair it’s straight, if i let it air dry it’s a tiny bit wavy, and if i really go through the effort of moisturizing, proper products etc it is distinctly wavy. it’s also a lot more wavy when it’s healthy, so a lot of people spend a long time thinking they have frizzy straight hair and keep damaging it by trying to style it as though it were straight hair. the struggle is real

Yes girl! Get some mousse and gel! Your hair will look gorggg! I have curly hair and this is exactly what happened to me I would brush it all the time a bunch after a shower bc I thought my hair was just really poofy and ig I tried to help with the poof by brushing it but then one day I didn’t and I realized my hair was curling up so I got some products and I have curly hair! So yes get some products and it will be amazing

This is literally me lol Former straight hair girl… Now I wash my hair at night, plop with product (Prose), and sleep with my hair wrapped in a microfiber towel. It’s so wavy and nice when I wake up!

Do you dry before this? When I sleep with wet hair uncovered it is wet in the morning.

@@c32sjwi recommend washing your hair, putting in product of choice, and diffusing your hair (because then your hair dries) and then wrapping your hair in the microfiber towel or a silk bonnet works too, That way it wont be wet when you wake up :)

I'm going through this journey myself!! Even when I would let it air dry and then would brush it later or the next day, my hair would stay wavy in the back, but would straighten in the front. I've been using so many different products now for wavy/curly hair and my hair is finally being it's cute true self 🤩 (still have some trial and error)

Any good products you would recommend to help define the waves?🥺

@LiLByA22 I use Chi Aloe Vera Detangling Curls Defined Conditioner in the shower! And then after my shower, after I use some leave-in conditioner, I put Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Curl Activator Hair Cream (I got the small travel bottle from Target to try it out at first) and do the hair scrunching. 😊

You have 2b-2c hair type you are definitely a wavy queen ❤ with time and the right products you could pull off a 3a curl pattern too, my mom is a hair stylist who specialize in this! You’d be surprised how many white women have naturally curly hair Edit: guys you forget that if you constantly use heat on your hair your curl pattern will be looser. When I had heat damage my curl pattern was 3a now that it’s healthy it’s 3c-4a. I think she has heat damage and it’s possible her hair is curly and not just wavy dang😂

My hair was pin straight as a kid but since I had babies my texture has changed. I believe I’m 2b/2c also and I’m considering starting to do my hair 😬😬 I don’t know where to start. I usually just let it air dry and put it in a clip 😅

I have no idea where you are getting this but there is definitely no way she could EVER naturally have 3A curls. 2A at the most

Sounds like low porosity hair, you might want to look into how to take care of that because apparently that makes a difference in how to care for your hair

Not curly, but your hair looks like it could be 2a (so very loose waves). If you like it, keep experimenting!

Tbh i thought i had wavy hair until I cut my hair and bam nope i have super curly hair. They just SCRUNCHED up as if i had a perm. I looked like an orphan ready to get a rich adoptive parent. But anyway, I looked up some haircuts for short hair, and now I have some hot lookin curly edgar cut that basically every teen boy has... but im a 22 year old lady. I might be confused for a twink but who knows

From a fellow wavy-haired friend, you DEFINITELY have wavy hair, prob somewhat around 2b waves if styled & cared for correctly. Based on what I see your hair is heavily tangled when wet so I recommend hydrating but still lightweight products for your finer hair. I also recommend you try what called plopping with a cotton t-shirt (look up for details)

My cheat for my wavy hair: wash at night, use a fabric scrunchie to put it up in a high pony, but don't pull through all the way on the 3rd wrap so that I have a messy bun. I let dry overnight, and the next day my waves and curls are glorious!

i have long long hair and i do the same thing, except i let it dry 3/4 of the way through first and then sleep on it!! if i don’t and just leave it down to dry it’ll look puffy and weird lol
