I love how Casio offers something for just about every market and they don't try to be something they're not. And if there's one thing they have conquered, it's how comfortable their watches wear.

As someone who owned two Oceanus, T200 and T4000, the I can tell you that the finishing is really good for the money, but not GS good, not as sharp as my SBGA375 for example. Especially between the lugs, my T4000 was very poorly finished between the lugs and that stopped me from using it on leather. These watches are super light thanks to it's titanium, but the module is mostly platic as well. I was kinda disappointed when I popped the caseback on mine, I was curious and I couldn't find a solid module picture at the time. One issue I had with both of my Oceanus, and I can see it on some of the macro shots here, is the hands/indices finishing... Like, the hands look a bit poorly cut and some random scratches on them. I felt like Casio put a lot of time into finishing the case but then installed hands from a Casio Édifice. I'm surprised you liked the clasp. I thought it was the worst idea ever, because I couldn't get a perfect size on my T4000, so I was using it with a extra link and the micro adjustment all the way in... And every time I opened the clasp, I would have to resize it again lol. I still think they are cool novelty watches, but I sold both of mine. The T4000 is technically a notch under the S5000 (but they use the same module), but I got mine when it was freshly released and paid around 850 USD for it 😅 Edit : I forgot to mention, the Casio app is HORRIBLE when compared to the Oceanus Connect app. The Oceanus app was way cleaner, way more intuitive and had nicer animation... Then Casio vde decided to discontinue it and force people to use the Casio app....
@RelativeTime

Well, I always wear my watches a little loose. So I sized it like that with the link in. Then when the humidity kicks up and my wrist swells a little, I just pop it out one. So far it's been pretty comfortable. I completely agree with you on the app. The new Casio app seems better than the old Casio one, but not as good as the Oceanus.

Casio is a brand that once you buy one you get sucked into the brand and can’t stop getting more and before you know it you’re collecting them in many different variations and prices but you end up wanting the more expensive exclusive , technical ones and then you go crazy and break out and go for the gills and take the plunge with models like the Oceanus …and you never look back !

I have a small watch collection. All my watches are working watches. None were acquired for decoration. The Crown Jewels of my collection are 2 Oceanus. One is now 5 years old and the new one about 3 months old. They are indeed quite special. From the accuracy, reliability and durability. Also the lume is excellent. Will last more that 8 hours. Adjust once and never again. Really, even if you let the power die in a dark drawer. Expose to light and let self sync overnight and done. Both were purchased directly from Japan, long after both were no longer available from Casio. Not all is perfect. The titanium strap was super scratch prone. I did replace the straps on both. Thank you Artem and Zuludiver!

I bought an OCW-T2600-1AJF. It looks very similar to the S5000, but is significantly cheaper. It has a simpler band, and no Bluetooth, which is redundant as I can receive the atomic clock signals. Also, the city names are not carved on the bezel, which I actually prefer. Otherwise not much different. I think we have Casio's association with cheap digital watches and calculators to thank for the fact you can get a watch of this quality at this price. They "should" be much more expensive.

Casio produces similar lower end versions in their Edifice line. The Edifice line looks and feels lower quality and the price us substantially cheaper. The Oceanus line is indeed premium and very much worth the higher price but to the average person there is not much differentiation between the sub brands. Perhaps this is behind the Oceanus being JDM and Edifice their budget offering of the same style for the global audience. I have 2 Oceanus models and 1 Edifice. Now I wish I hadn't bought the Edifice even though it's a limited edition model. Having a JDM outside Japan adds to it's desirability and thus good ownership feeling.

Well, no, Shane, you're not nuts for digging this watch: I have a Casio Edifice EQS-500 series with a lot of the same vibe ascthis Oceanus, minus the titanium and wireless connectivity. It *does* have virtually everything else, and wraps it in a cool package almost as understated as yours (which is certainly *not* the case across-the-board in the Edifice lineup). I think Edifice is where Casio starts to roll up its would-be haute-horology sleeves, whereas with Oceanus they "take it to 11" in terms of materials and finishing. For me, Edifice is as far up the Casio food chain as I care to throw my money at, but I do admire what they're doing at the very top. (And, for anyone who doesn't know about Casio's Edifice line, I encourage you to check it out, but be forewarned that some of the designs there are a bit over-the-top; my choice by contrast is rather restrained, but something that's satisfied me long-term.

Big brands need to come down with the margins a bit, for 1000$ you can get an aventurine dial Zelos, a titanium/forged carbon dial Phoibos and a solar chronograph Tactical Frog all of them better finished, with milled clasps, quick adjust Super Luminova, AR coating, Seiko mechanical/solar movements and 300m water resistence. That's something I'll have to look into a little more. Someone pointed out today that all Casios with Bluetooth prioritize it over multiband. I'm guessing because it's more precise to your location, and it doesn't want to confuse it with two signals. Now some are saying that once you pair your watch to the phone it will no longer check the multiband signal. At least not until you unpair it with a combo of buttons on the watch. Whereas some are saying that it won't check until it hasn't been able to pair with your phone for over 24hrs. The Casio manual doesn't mention anything, so I'll have to do some experimenting to see.

No Shane, you are not crazy. It's just that this category of watches - which I'm very fond of - is not well known outside of Japan at all. I have a couple of them and they are really exceptional! Casio Oceanus, Citizen Attesa and Exceed, Seiko Astron and Brightz are mostly or exclusively JDM lines of high tech dress GADA watches, which are very popular in Japan. They are usually given as gifts to young professionals when starting out, and are also very popular as pair watches for couple anniversaries or engagements. Also, in Japan each year you are getting LE models with different dial options, based on themes. Citizen is very well known for that, this years' theme is based on the sea (the line is called Unite with Blue). Some models in this category from this year that might interest you. Citizen Attesa BY1001-66E and CB3030-76E. Seiko Astron SBXY055 and SBXY033 Keep the goodness coming, cheers!

Pair it with a phone via BT and the app. Then keep the watch out of range of the phone for 3 days. Check if multiband syncing still works. I bet it doesn't. Oh, and good luck with UNpairing the watch from the phone so multiband sync works again.

Does BT stop the watch from using multiband? Now I have noticed that multiband doesn't always work, but I figured that's because of my house with dense bricks all around it. I'll have to look into it more.

@@RelativeTime I've got several Casios with BT and multiband. Once connected they all ignore multiband and demand to see the phone/app. They won't fall back even if you use the "unpair" (not really) described in the manual. I had to dig the web to find instructions on how to find the REAL unpair function in the watches own settings mode, like press this until in time setting, press that until xyz blinks, then press and hold x, y and z until display shows .... I can only imagine how that will work on an analog watch .. Once back on multiband, my watches never fail to sync - every night (last sync timestamp can be displayed). I deleted the apps, unpaired the watches and I'm fine again. Btw the apps are a phone battery drainer. To me, the BT functionality is the most useless and disappointing feature ever.

Yeah, I'm reading up on this now. Didn't realize it disabled or made it more difficult. I'll have to look into this more. I remember back in the old Oceanus app there was a screen that showed up the last time the watch was synced up and indicated if it was BT or Multiband, but I don't see that at all now on the newer Casio app. So I assumed it was using both, but maybe not. Although I will say that so far I've liked BT on it just for initially setting up the watch. Especially the perpetual calendar. Every other analog watch I've used that has had it, has been a major pain to set up.

@@RelativeTime yes I get that and thought the same - it's maybe handy for the setup. But the features are really not worth it. Timezones / world times - after the setup I need to read them on the watch anyway. Alarms - to be honest I rarely use ONE alarm, let alone two or even more. Reminders? Last time this went off on my watch I couldn't remember how to stop it, how to redisplay it after it was gone, andni only remembered I had set it to display someone's birthday. Open the manual viewer, find the PDF, read it all over again ... What a pain in the crack! I turned it off / cleared them all and decided to never use it again - my phone does a better job with the calendar i sync with outlook. Selecting world times was so slow and laggy on the app I was faster setting them by pushing the buttons on the watch. And then the annoyance of a drained battery, the app losing connection to the watch, the watch not syncing time anymore ... Oh Jesus, what have I done?!?! Recently the old app told me it's replaced by a new one, will no longer work. Install new one, try it out , dang I got to pair it again ... Oh no, what have I done? Find the unpair cheat sheet again, not paying attention, did it say hold until x or until y? Dang - watch factory reset. Thank you very much. After I got it all working, set up and unpaired again I deleted the apps for good. I'm healed now. No more connected sh+t on my wrist! Enjoy your hobby - but be a bit more critical about geek features. Then last thing you want to experience is being tracked by all 27 three letter agencies and the WEF because you decided to wear your favourite timepiece. And without cash they soon control your transactions - not only will they know about it, they will bluntly deny those they deem unfavourable. Another watch this year? Sorry, error processing your transaction. Btw, yiuve reached your CO2 footprint limit for this month, no fuel at the gas station, no charging of your EV ...

I am surprised that very few KZitemrs go to the Oceanus G2000 GPS or P2000 ISO diver model, those seem to be more "special" while most casio oceanus are competing with Seiko Astron

When I see a watch with an integrated bracelet, I have an immediate, negative reaction. Interestingly, I had that feeling even before becoming a watch nerd. My experience is that all metal bracelets end up looking bad unless you really baby them. Even as I type this my watch clasp is rubbing all over my desk. I like to change up the look of many of my watches by exchanging bracelets for straps, both leather and rubber. You can sometimes do that with integrated bracelets, but oftentimes you have to modify the strap to make it work. And sometimes it is just not possible. Other than that, this is an outstanding watch and highly desirable.

This is true. Long-term wear is always a big concern. I have an old titanium Seiko Kinetic with one that looks all scratched up after 20 some years. Hopefully, the protective coating keeps this one looking pristine longer.

Couple of comments. I’m a well educated, reasonably bright guy but there is zero chance I could even begin to operate that “watch”. Honestly, that’s a huge con for me. It’s total overkill. Also, I can’t say I know the correct pronunciation of “Oceanus” but I’m pretty sure it ain’t “Oshy- anus”.
@RelativeTime
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking it might be pronounced like Uranus. The fact that might be Greek, but who knows how the Japanese would pronounce it. Operating the watch isn't too bad after you've had it. At least after you've done the initial setup with the app. The main thing to remember is just had a switch between the modes.

I thought they were made here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xnho23eBjXioo6A Or at least when i registered the watch with the Casio app it gave me a "Premium Production line" certificate. You can see it briefly in the video at 3:35 . But it says something about that factory.

Yeah, but not to the same level. The finishing of my T4000 was impressive for the 850 USD I paid (at the time), but when I put them side by side next to my SBGA375, there was no context (and that's understandable). The biggest difference I saw on the case finishing, is that the part between the lugs of my T4000 wasn't nicely polished, it was "meh", on my SBGA375 it was nice and clean, despite both watches coming on bracelets. But the GS was overall "nicer" finished. The hands on Oceanus is isn't anywhere near as good, they look from their Edifice line, rough edges and random scratches on them (even see in this footage). But at least Casio doesn't claim that their hands get the same treatment as their cases.

Both the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary give the pronunciation as "oh-SEE-uh-nuhs" (my transcription; see dictionaries for phonetic version). This was news to me, as for years I've thought it was "oh-shee-A-nus" (where "A" represents a as in American English "ash" or "add"). The Oxford app has audio file of pronunciation, too.

Interesting. I guess that makes sense if it's origins are greek. Although I did find a recent Casio Japan ad, that pronounces it near the end. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sXitnIh3kHypgpg Right around 12 seconds. It sounds more like oh-shee-an-us there.

'Only Casio could make this watch'?😂 As per other Oceanus, the case is likely done by Seiko and the movement is spookily similar to Citizen. Citizen make many models, including the Attessa line, at a similar price, with all the same specs.
