Damn, I'm really sorry to hear that. I totally can sympathize with you. Regarding not feeling motivated, I think you were burnt out. Especially with freelance work, I know how much mental energy that can take up, even if you are not aware of it. And with the quality of your videos, it's clear you have high expectations of yourself and you put a lot of work into these vids, even if it's a hobby. Between a freelancing job, youtube, and fixing up an old house, those three things alone can easily cause you to burn out. I've had my fair share of heart break too. It sucks. You've had time to just sit there and just feel the discomfort but don't get trapped in that space. You got to get yourself upright, not for anybody else, but for yourself. Regardless of how important anybody is to you, you got to be able okay with letting them go so you have the mental and emotional capacity to move forward. It's what's best for everyone, including yourself, everyone you know, and everyone you will know. Depression is a bitch. You're not going to like it but you got to force yourself to do things you used to enjoy, little by little. You said it yourself, when you're filming, you feel fine. There were so many days I didn't feel like going to the gym, to go skate, to interact with friends online and off. But EVERY single time I forced myself to do it, I never regretted and felt better afterwards. It's building up the strength to do it that sucks but you do it enough times and you will feel stronger. I've suffered a similar situation to yours, got depressed and burnt out, and stopped making videos too. But then I realized how awesome it is that I have a fun hobby that others find enjoyment in too, and I have waaay smaller channel than yours. Your talent and what you've built up so far is way too good to let it go. The only reason this channel should stop is if you don't find enjoyment in it anymore. As a subscriber from when you had less than 2k subs, your content is always amazing. I hope you'll regain your footing soon.

And sincerely, please only make these videos if it brings meaning and joy to you. We appreciate that you can give videos to us, because they help fulfill our need to feel a part of a larger community, especially in the tiny world of freestyle. We would like if you gave us the opportunity to help you to meet your needs too, so I hope you reconsider opening a patreon someday, or that you will let us know if there are other things we can do to help meet your needs other than with money. Very sorry to hear that your wife left and of your depression.. I can relate,, in 2001 I was in the USAF,, they reassigned me to another state and my wife at the time said "our daughter and I will not be moving with you,, good-bye",, and we never got back together.......... I know your pain,, but you will recover,, either alone or with a companion.. Since then I haven't been in a serous relationship,, but I've become very content with my single life........... I thoroughly enjoy your skating videos, along with tens of thousands of other folks,, though 95% of viewers are too lazy and unappreciative to click the "like" button.. The research and knowledge you produce in your videos are more comprehensive than anything else I've seen or read.. I'm very grateful that you generously share your videos with everyone,,,, but please don't feel at all burdened to produce content for your viewers/subscribers.. Take care of yourself,, you're clearly intelligent,, make note of what activities improve your mood,, and hopefully you can within a few months increase your mental state to a 5 or 6........... What helped give me strength was knowing that God and Jesus cares about me,, and that I'm not to unjustly suffer for an extended period of time.. You probably have already discovered this, but reflect, assess where you are and where you'd like to be,, and take small but deliberate steps to get well...

Thanks for being open about all of it. Sometimes, life sucks. And it’s very good that you talk about it. In todays social media world most are just showing the happy and successful sides of life. So if disaster strikes people don’t know what to do and think they are the only ones hit. But face it: there will be a time for every one of us we will fight for our lives and loose. And until then, there is a boatload of shit that can happen; and if no one talks about it, everyone feels alone in their struggle. So thanks again for being open. And yes, you are going to heal and be fine. Look into yourself and find that one thing that makes you yourself, that cannot be changed by outside circumstances. Understand it, let it grow and take it as a reference point. It will guide you out of everything.

Why does the culture do this to itself? This knowledge is not easily accessible and you're the only source I know that makes in depth vids on the history. Would they rather some big media company make a docu-series so they get paid rather than an actual skater and member of the community? Fucking sellouts. Love u Rad Rat!

Im so sorry to hear that man. I can’t claim to have insight on your particular experience but as far as dealing with anxiety and depression I’m right there. I connect with that experience of inertness, knowing you could be doing something for yourself and just not being able or willing to do. For what it’s worth, I think it’s important to remind yourself that it’s ok to feel that way. You can permit yourself to feel however you are feeling because you’ve had to deal with a really traumatic thing. So take all the time and space you need and really just focus on what is bringing you joy right now, and if that’s not the channel thats fine. Also if you are not seeing a therapist, that can really help, even if it’s just for an event based depression like what you are going through. I also think you are totally right about not monetizing the channel. The fact that you operate from a place of caring about skateboarding and wanting to talk about it really shows in your content. I’m sure the quality wouldn’t be as good if you were forcing yourself to churn content on a tight schedule. Anyway, I wish you the best. I really do think with time and a lot of patience and self care you will put this behind you and start another chapter of your life. Thanks for all the great content so far. There’s a lot of folks rooting for you. Stay strong

Take your time brother. Your videos are always a treat and I don’t mind waiting! Seriously though, we are here for you and understand your hesitation in continuing as you once were.

haha yeah I like the little progress bars :) to your personal situation, if this channel is your hobby, then treat it like a hobby. you don't HAVE to make new videos if you don't feel like it. otherwise, as you can see, it takes away the fun and motivation. you have lots of stuff to do at the moment and you should get them done, so you have time for other things. even if this takes another year or so. to darkstar, I think it's just a skate brand trying to survive. sure they don't support skateshops by selling boards to supermarkets but otherwise darkstar might no longer be around...

i just started watching your videos last year, thought you was a complete skate nerd, but really i started watching all your old videos and man, i was like this is a pretty cool channel. i hope you are doing better now, and somehow keep doing what you enjoy doing. (like you said, its just a hobby of yours) and hobbies should be just fun. if your not having fun doing it then quit. but if your having fun doing it, then continue doing what is fun for you. i hope you keep doing it, cause i really like your videos. very informative, funny, and cool stuff to watch.

Mate it's a cliche but time is a healer. I can relate to what you're going through. I'd be more than happy to be a Patreon you should start that up. Good luck and glad too see you back
