The problem with salt and vinegar is that both salts and acid react with moisture and the paint pigments itself so the result isnt very stable and can have unexpected interactions with varnishes or paint.

Uh... yeah, about that. In my trunk, a 2 gallon bucket with some heavy rocks in the bottom to prevent tip over, garbage bag liner, plus some extras, shovel, and a stick with a sharpened metal hook (bicycle hanger) screwed into one end. Gloves. Use hook and shovel to load roadkill into bucket, tie bag. Empty into unlined 5 gallon bucket. Leave outside with heavy rock on top away from house. After a few days add some water if necessary, if it's really dry out. You want wet rot, not skin drying on to bones. Once it's just a mass of fur and bone with little goo, dump out onto a flat surface and give a quick gentle hosing, pick out bones, let dry in a breathable bag for several weeks until the marrow dries up. You can boil, freeze, or soak in 10% bleach 90% water to speed up cleaning. Do multiple roadkills at once to get the most use out of your effort. paws provide the best scale bones for 28mm. Squirrel, fox, raccoon, etc. If you're Miss Jackson/nasty just snip the paws off with a set of pruning shears. Like me I don't give a fuck if I'm snipping off rotten Squirrel paws as long as it doesn't touch my skin directly.

That's a pretty nice effect for how simple it was. I'd love to see some refinement to it, maybe mixing some iron powder in with a medium in a paint pot, vortex mixing it to get proper suspension, and then going on with a more subtle effect. Did you try "painting" vinegar over the ones that didn't include any to see if you could bring out the rust on them?
@PatrickSamphire

To rust, the iron needs access to oxygen and water. When you use the pure PVA or the varnish, when they dry they are sealing in the iron powder and keeping the oxygen and water away from the iron. So they should never rust.

Man, now I want fish & chips and it's 9 in the morning. Otherwise, great video! I got a whole bunch of tanks and a new terrain board that this is going on. Frankly I was going to go with the paint job Jeremy from Black Magic Craft did on his big Plague City board, but this looks much easier. Quick questions though; Did you try putting small globs on top of some rust colored paints, giving texture to just one part of the rust? Could you apply the powder with pigment fixer and then spray the vinegar on? Does it need to be sealed afterwards? Are you going to replace the Martian earth basing powder with a bunch of old iron powder? Will this "weird out" the magnets on my terrain sets? Would it smell better if you used apple cider vinegar?

This was awesome! Very inspired, and now I want to go get a skeleton army and douse all their armour in the stuff. And besides, it's a LOT cheaper/faster to do this than to get 3 things of pigment and mix up a million different shades of paint (and still feel unhappy with the result). I wonder, if there was one place I wanted to be especially drippy (like the edge of a window), if I could make a slightly runnier mixer with more vinegar and sort of drip it down the side.... Something to try!! Thanks!

The mixture of vinegar and iron creates a dye called Vinegroon in leather working. It makes a nice, deep blue-black color. After it dries, you have to spray it with a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize it. Otherwise the leather dries out and becomes brittle. I wonder if the same would work on this after it is dried?

I used some actual rust (I let a steel wool pad rust over a couple of days) on a building piece a few years ago. Scraped the rust off, added it to some matt medium and painted it on. It continued to rust for a few days until I could get to varnishing it (sealing it prevents it from further oxidation).

If you seal it with a serious coat of PU varnish you will stop the athmospheric oxidation but you wont stop redox reactions between the rust/iron and the paint pigments which can lead to color changes or destabilized paint layers.

I have done art with real rust before, the problem is that the oxidization process doesn't just stop. It will continue to eat the metal and flake off and fall off. The only way I have found to seal real rust without it looking different is under clear resin. It stops oxygen from getting to it. Can a coat of varnish do a good enough job at that? Or will the varnish flake off and crack overtime as the rust moves from under it? Maybe it can. I have not tested that. But I have tried various seal sprays and clear coats over my pieces, and it doesn't help.

Pva isnt really a good option for this. You will get much better result by mixing the rust with a transparent acrylic medium or matte varnish. If you have a small ceramic mortar and pestle or even a ball mill grinding up rust really fine is perfectly feasible as rusts are a staple pigment in painting for tens of thousands of years.

It's probably already been mentioned, but ammonia (the strongest you can get your hands on) will patina metal ssssssoooo fast it'll make your head spin. The cheapest way to do this is to use window cleaner (w/ ammonia, obviously) & spay down the exposed metal. Pretty much overnight it'll be rusted. The cheap cheap CHEAPEST way is to also drop your project in an uncleaned cat box. That technique damn near works in an hour, but then there's dealing with rummaging your project out of a litter box.
