This is a Technic set the way they used to, and in my opinion, should be. A mainly Lego System shell housing mechanisms that power great features. That is how Technic used to be back in the 90s, and I much prefer that to the current approach of fairings everywhere and next to no System elements. Building this set was a blast from the past for me and I had so much fun with it. The way the instructions alternate between System and Technic assemblies keept me very invested throughout the build process... at least until it was time to build the wing roots, repeating essentially the same subassembly 8 times and then another 8 times again got pretty tedious, but that is generally just a very small part of the overall process. To me this is an ultimate Lego set, and I know how bold that sounds - but it combines the best of System (the way the entire cockpit is constructed) and Technic (ingenious mechanisms using no cogs and rubber bands) as well as excellent display (seriously is as good as Lego models get IMO, if you want a perfect replica, that's what scale models are for) and play features (yes, its 18+ set, but who said that adult themed sets don't need play features, and it accomplishes them without an engine). I'm blown away by it and I love mine, best fun I had with Lego since Saturn V and that one was a first Lego set for me in 16 years.

First off, I want to point out that the flapping function works much better when you're lifting it off the ground and the wings aren't in contact with it, allowing it to move more and faster. And I think the thing that separates the people who adore the set, and those who are more mixed are whether they feel the functions make up for the visual shortcomings. For me, I'm slightly inbetween: On one hand: the functions and stability are nothing short of a Lego engineering marvel. It's pretty easy to see why someone would overlook it's visual shortcomings, especially when they're usually in service to the functions. I even would. But I'm the other, I just can't help but feel like some of the unpolished areas being polished up wouldn't have affected the stability at all. Specifically some of the lower back that could definitely have had a bit more plating, and ESPECIALLY the red pins and red and yellow axles. The blue pins aren't that noticable and don't come in any other color, but the red and yellow stuff are and do. I know it's usually for ease of building, but I refuse to believe it would have made things _that_ much more challenging, especially for the 18+ demographic who probably wouldn't mind a bit more difficulty for much better looks. Overall, it's a set where what it does well, it undeniably does absolutely phenomenally, but what it does poorly can be a big make or break depending on how you view it. Also, great video as always, but I must ask why you think someone would display the set head on instead of to the side? If someone has the shelf space, they might do head on, but from the side, it shouldn't be _that_ hard to fit in a shelf.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Regarding display options, personally, I don't find it as impressive when the blades are closed. However, I thoroughly enjoy the view from the front when all the blades are opened, as it gives the aircraft a sense of lightness.

I think it’s confusing a lot of AFOLs….there are those into figures and system building who can’t stand that you can’t fit all the figures inside. Then there are those Technic fans who don’t seem to like that it comes with minifigures. If it were a Technic branded set nobody would be complaining about the rear ramp that leads to nowhere due to a lack of interior. You find this quite often on technic models, features that exist without really needing to because the rest is lacking. But because it’s branded as Icons rather than technic it seems to be coming in for a lot more flack than it deserves. Personally I am not a minifigure collector, I’m a stand alone, typically oversized model guy. The exception being my UCS ATAT (which I have packed with Snowtroopers) and the minifigure scale snowspeeder I’ve built to go with it. Aside from those the only only figures I have are a few upscaled figures based on the recent set- an Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters built using parts from the Harry Potter Upscaled figure, a Borg drone built out of the standard upscaled figure as well as the remains of the Hermione upscaled figure and a standard upscaled figure who’s been infected with the venom symbiote. Oh and I have a Mega figure of Boba Fett (BoBF version) as well as a Mega figure version of Spider-Man I’m working on. But apart from that I don’t do minifigures….so I’ve sold the 8 that came with the set and that’s practically paid for the set itself (clearly there are fans who love the figures but have a real dislike for this “technic in disguise” set!) 😂 And yes at 80 cm wide it’s not the easiest of sets to display, but neither is the Titanic, the UCS Falcon, the Technic firefighter aircraft or the Technic Airbus helicopter. But you find a way. 🤔🤷😂

I'm hopeful that more Dune sets will be released eventually. It feels a bit odd to have 8 minifigures when 6 of them have nowhere to be placed.

For the reasons you stated in the beginning of your comment I think this is the perfect set for me, because I love the functions of Technic, the looks of system sets and I love to collect minifigures. This set has it all for me, and I love the 2021 Dune movie and the ornithopter so it's just such nice fan service especially to have that Baron Harkonnen with that ridiculous cape piece. I'm not huge on Technic, only have a couple sets, but this set would be nothing without the functions in my opinion. And I don't think people really realize that, even ones that wish it would be more displayable and fit more minifigs inside. I know people complain about the looks, but here I am actually impressed that they managed to make it look that good considering the complex shape of the aircraft. There are some things they could've maybe done to make it a bit better like not using bright colors in some places but they do what they gotta do to keep the instructions accessible.

Honestly, both sets have their pros and cons. While I'm a bit disappointed with the Medieval Town Square, if I had to choose between the Ornithopter and the Medieval Town Square, I'd probably go with the Medieval Town Square. However, the Ornithopter does make a nice display piece.

Its the wrong branding, that really hurts the set. still good enough for display, but technic should be called as that. I still like the set very much. I only have the space shuttle and ISS, so iam not the typical lego customer. but its still an engineering marvel and bought it as such. the figures are ok. just a little missplaced with this set. i would have liked only 2 with proper details on arms and legs more.
